A Brazil Lady Captures One of the Tooth's Companion Short Story Prize*. Special to the Express

BRAZIL, Ind., October 8.—W. M, Moore has returned from a short visit to Canton, Ohio. He describes the political situation there as being intensely hot, with thellepnblicans manifestly in the lead. Milt Wilhite has gone on a viBit to Louisville and vicinity, where he has friends living. Some weeks ago the Youth's Companion, published in New York, offered two prizes for the best two stories of about four thousand words, the first prize being $500, and the Becond $250. Mrs. M. B. Hussey, of this city, entered the competition, and a few days ago was gratified at recieving a letter announcing that her production had been awarded the second prize. She was also requested as a regular contributor to the pager. C. M. Thompson, of Bowling Green, and one of i:Lo principal partners of the Clay Citj bank recently suspended, is in the city to-dav. As to the condition of the bank, he reports it as entirely solvent ahd the depositors satisfied in the assurance of getting their money in full within a reasonable time. Indeed, many of them have already been paid off and all can have the very best of paper if they desire it.

Mr. Holmes, of the Sullivan bar, was in court here this morning to transact a little business.*—Addison Daggy, of the Greencastle bar, was here on legal business to-day. Mr. Mulhsdl, of the rolling mill Irish Blaine and Logan club, goes to his home in Ohio Saturday night to be absent until after the Ohie election.

NEIGHBORHOOD POLITICS,

Clay County Politics.

Special to the Express. BRAZIL, Ind., October 8.—Preparations are in progress for the Calkins meeting to be held here on Saturday. Anew supply of torches has been ordered, ana will be on hand for the occasion. The Blaine and Logan clubs have all held meetings and each will turn out as a distinct body to the even ing meeting. on. J. H. Fowler, Democratic candidate for state senator, is giving this end of the county hiB farewell visit, this week. Mr. Fowler is evidently in hot water and proposes to stick to the war path until the last day in the evening. That traditional large majority in his favor does not seem to make him entirely easy.

Major Carter speaks at Seeleyville this evening. The Democrats Disturb a Republican

Meeting at Poland, Clay County. To the Terre Haute Express. BOWLINS GREBN, Ind., October 7.— As a participant in the Republican rally last Saturday night, at Poland the occasion of the great speech of that gallant soldier, W. W. Carter, I will try and show to your many readers the tactics of the Democratic party in this campaign. Bulldozing, intimidation and def«" Vion are their stock in trade. As -»*on as the Democracy learned that thj people of this part of the county intended to give the gallant major a reception commensurate with his ability, talent and the great services that he had rendered his country in the hour of her distress and need. They went to work with all their well-known arts of deception to counteract as much as possible this grand demonstration of a union-loving people. After mature deliberation it was thought best that the Democracy should have a grand demonstration in favor of reform and to ho'd their meeting at Schroer's school house about two miles from the Republican meeting. George A. Knight and George Byrd were to be the speakers at this great reform meeting and woald at least entertain the meeting during the time of the Republican speaking at Poland. George A. Knight failed to put in an appearance, knowing, we suppose, the purpose for which the meeting was gotten np, but George Byrd was there.

You will take notice the peculiar orthography of his name. We are informed that he has, since he became a public speaker, substituted the letter "v" instead of the letter "i," because the bird he was named for was an early one and had all of the characteristics belonging to such birds. This gentleman was the orator of the occasion. He warned his Democratic friends solemnly that prohibition was the evil of the hour, and if they would ao far forget themselves, their families, their God and their native land by voting the Republican ticket, their punishment would be but just if full prohibimeasnres were adoDted. Mr.

tory Biro entertained his motley crew lor about three-quarters oi an hour in his peculiar strain as above narrated. Bat this did not satisfy part of his mongrel crew, and thev hastened with all possible speed to "the Republican meeting and commenced and unwarranted attack upon the same by the use.of brick bats, one striking Mr. Robert Smith on tke head. This community understand these gentlemen. They know that if they lived it* Mifsi^ippi they would be Copiah rounty murderer*, bulldozers or shot-gun intimidatore, or whatever would De the most efiective

in suppressing Republican votes, bat thanlr God, we live ins land of liberty, where we are entitled to a free ballot and a fair count, and the Republican banner of liberty and free speech will never be folded and laid away until thin principle is triumphant in every state in this broad land.
