CLINTON,

ONLY A FRACTION OF OUR RAILWAYS CONSIDEREF^BOLIO.

The B. & O.'s 111 Fate.

A blow has been stricken the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, from which it will be no sbort while in recovering) unless the Pennsylvania railroad compsmy yields. The last mentioned has given the Baltimore & Ohio company notice, through Robert Garrett, acting president, that on and after the twelvth day of tbiS month that company will be deprived^ the privilege of running its passenger trains over the Pennsylvania lines between Baltimore and New York. This action Will stagger tlu business of the B. A O. seriously. Their connection with New York dty via Baltimore was a source of pride to the B. & O. folks. Their efforts to recover the lost line, which was 111 miles in length, will doubtless prove futile, for the tenor of the notice served is positive. If, before next Sunday, an extension^ ol the notice is not made, the reputation and business of the B. & 0. wilJ be wrecked. The formidable feeling always existing between the rival companies, and which will not die out in years, has worsted the B. & O., and rove unpleasant and oth.

Special to the Express.

PAKIR, 111.,

October

7,1884.—Hon.'

W. J. Oalhoan, of( Danville, Illinois, apoke to the Blaine and Logan clab in tbis city last night. It wn pronounced by all to be one of the beet speeches delivered here in thiB campaign. Mr. Galhonn's argument On the tariff was exhaustive and replete with facta showing conclusively that the protective system is the policy of progress'in this county. The Hon. Alex. Massey, of Sullivan, Ind., addressed a goocL -me®tingat Chrisman last night. The Republicans are thoroughly in earnest, and will win.

Hon. R. 11. F. Peirce at Clin Special to the Express.

Ind., October,7.—The Hon.

B. F. Peirce made a telling speech at this place last night. The Cadet band, followed by the juvenile torch light bearers, escorted him to the Opera house and when the hour for speaking arrived the hall was filled to its utmost capacity. JHr. Peirce spoke over an hour and a-half, receiving the close attention of his large audience and was heartily applauded at frequent intervals. The meeting closed with three rousing "cheers for the speaker. At his hotel after the speaking Mr. Peirce received a serenade from the 'big four."

Only a Fraction of Onr Railways sldered Solid.

With the scores and scores1 of railways thut traverse this country it would seem to a superficial observer that at least one half .of them aliould be upon such financial basis as to insure confidence: abroad w^relljra at home. But it is not »so. The oft repeated appointment of a receiver for roads that have overdone themselves in the way of competition and succeeded in miring themselves has broken all confidence in railway speculators. The Wabash, St. Louis & Pa cific railway company, which long ago nta«*ered under a heavy weight and finally succumbed to the inevitable, is simply an illustration of the fundamentally evil methods which prevail" generally in the management of railroads. Still another instance is the Toledo, Cincinnati & St. Louis narrow gauge. Casting aaide the methods 'by which thw evil lflffcd generally brought about—usually by the unique plan of beginning operations oa the basis of abject bankruptcy—the exact state of the solidity of American railways is of chief interest.

Some of the dividend-paving companies are not mismanaged, nor an they under the conttol of corrupt ad ministration. About a dortn' lintel, comprising perhaps one-third of the total mileage, viz.: the Chicago & Alton, Chicago Burlington & Qninoy, Chicago Rock Island & Pacific, Illinois Central, Delaware Lackawanna & Western, New York Central, Baltimore & Ohio, Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, Northern Central, and Delaware & Hudson, can doubtless be depended upon for annual average dividends of from 7 to 5 per cent. But all these are subject to competition, and most of them before getting to that satisfactory phase of development, when pasB«ngers and higlr class local treight furnish the revenue, will pats through a stage of partial insolvency when the .shares will not receive as much as 4 per cent. Suofet possibilities as these, together with the otherfe referred to above, will lead at intervals to marked

The Peoria, Decatur & Evansville railway gives notice that the postoffice at the station now known as Majority Point, 138 miles from Peoria, having been changed to Toledo, 111., the name of the station has been changed to correspond.

Prominent railroad men and capif llists, including W. P. Hubbard, Samnel Merrill, W. P. Howland, and others, will meet at Pittsburg October 15 to discuss the construction of an air line road 1,200 miles Ibngto connect New York with Chicago.

The office of the*&£&0. Telegraph company at Logansport -was opened yesterday morning. The business of this.company is diversified, throughont the United States and its system is always acquiring important facilities for furtherance of its already well established business.

Receiver Henderson, of the Olney railroad, has the satofaction of seeing the road, for the r8t t'-ne in its history, earning enough to pay all expenses with a residue to be applied to old debts. New ties are being put in, And the road bed otherwise improved The old receiver left $120,000 of unpaid certificates from sixteen months operation of the road. Mr, Henderson is increasing surplus earnings every month, after paying current and Some of the oid debts.
