They closed their canvass at the little village of Annapolis in Parke county, the evening before the day of the election, both gallant leaders almost worn out by reason of their excessive labors. They were the guests of Dr. during their stay at Annapolis. On the following morning after the closing debate, it was arranged that Thompson should be taken by private conveyance to Montezuma, where he was to take a boat and return to his home at Terre Haute, and Wright was to drive home to Rockville.

In bidding each other good bye before they separated Thompson said laughingly to Wright,, "Job, when you see me again I will be a United States congressman." After the passage of some other pleasantry between them they parted. After Thompson had gone, Dr. who was a very earnest admirer of Wright, said, "Wright, how is the election going? You will beat Thompson, won't you?" "No," says Wright, "I will be defeated." "Why, now is that, Wright? We certainly, have the advantage, of being on tne right side of the issues dividing us and you are undoubtedly the equal of Thompson on the atump I can not understand why you think you will be defeated." Mr. Wright said "you are mistaken in otfe thing, doctor, Dick Thompson's equal doesn't live in the state of Indiana." Thus pleasantly ended one of the most notable congressional races ever made in the state of Indiana, and the result of the election showed that both men wefre true prophets, as'Thompson was the next congressman from the old Seventh district. INTERNATIONAL TIME STANDm*.- ABD,

The Conference to be Held Next WeekGovernments to be Represented. Nearly all the governments which have been invited by the United States to send representatives to the International Meridian and Time Standard Conference, to be held at Washington, October 1st, have accepted and named thieir delegates. The number of delegates from each government is limited to five. None are expected to send the full number. The American delegates are President Barnard of Columbia College, chairman of the delegation Professor Clevelan Abbe, Commander W. T. Sampson, United States navy Lewis M. Rutherford and W. T. Allen. The delegates fiom Great Britain are Captain Sir F. J. Evans, E. N., Professor. J. Adams, Lieutenant Gengn^ Strachey and Sandford FleminJ^-Trance will send M. A. Lefaiver, consul gen eiral at New York, and M. Janssen, Austria will be represented by the Baron Ignatz von Schaeffer, Brazil, Denmark, Japan, Holland, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway, Turkey and uiany smaller powers have also named tneir representatives. Spain, Italy, Russia and Greece will probably senc. delegates, but have not yet named them. Germany is still considerin the proposition, while Belgium wil probably not be represented. As to I101the probable position of the standard meridian to be chosen, President Bernard expressed yesterday the opinion that the meridian of Greenwich would be selected, as its adoption would ne cessitate a minimum of changes in existing systems. The action of the delegates will not however, be binding upon the powers represented, and will require the ratification of the several governments.

It is considered not impossible that there may be some reluctanco on the part of France to accept the meridian of her great maritime rival. President Barnard, however, does not think that this would prove to be a serious check upon the proceedings of the conference. He said that last year, at a nonofficial geodetic congress held at Rome, the adoption of the meridian of Greenwich as the zero had been recommended. The French delegates then

Anglo-Saxon weights and measures that some such offer might be again made by France in the coming congress, and accordingly they have sent |a circular to each member of the

American delegation advocating the rejection of any such offer. When asked whether the congress would probably abolish the old sys

west from the prime meridian, through 180 degrees, and substitute a method of reckoning longitude in one direction only, through the 360 degrees, President Barnard Btated that the object of the conference was to establish a prime meridian, and that tn his judgment the object only should be accomplished, and that other questions and details should not be considered. This, he thought, would also be the opinion of the congress. The conference will meet in the diplomatic rooms of the Department of State. The government has made an appropriation of $5,000 for necessary expenses, but the American delegates receive no compensation.
