HOLLANDSBURG, Ind., September 19 —The Republicans of Union Township met at this place last night to hear A. J. Beveridge, of Illinois the gifted young orator. He Bpoke nearly two hours and with most excellent effect. Thus far during the campaign we have not witnessed equal enthusiasm. He is doing violent and effective service for the cause. He was followed by the Hon. Wm. Knowles in a brief and pointed speech, after which John D. bright delivered an exhortation, and opened the doors of the church, when a Blaine and Logan club was organized of seventy-five or eighty members, two young Democrats joining the organization. Mr. B. will speak at the court house in Rockville to-night, and we anticipate a crowded houBe.

The magnitude of the money order business between this country and England, exclusive of the remainder of Europe, is shown by the fact that the postmaster-general is required to transmit weekly to England a sum of money averaging $75,000 in payment of the balance against the United States. This sum represents the excess of money orders sold in this country, payable to England, over the sales in that country of money orders payable in the United States.

RAIL REVEALINGS.

Happenings Tending to Scire "Problem of the Age,'

The Representative of the Local Division of the B. of L. E. Mr. Jacob Sachs, councilman of the Fifth ward and engineer of No. 180, running between heie and St. Louis, on the Yandalia, leaves Monday night for San Francisco. He goes to the annual convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, asa representative of division No. 25, which is comosed of engineers running into Terre iaute. The convention meets October 1, to last ten or twelve days. It is probable that this convention will hold the longest session of any ever held, for each succeeding convention for five years has lengthened two or three days over the preceding one._ The division has made a good selection, for no one of their number is more able to represent its interests than Mr. Sachs. He has been with the Yandalia for years. His acquaintance with the relation of employed to employer is such as to further nobly the cause for which the organization .was had. He goes bearing the colors of the Republican party in the form of a white high hat with white band. Mr. Sach's will return in about two weeks.

The Illinois Midland's Standing. The report of the Illinois Midland Railway company for the year ending June 30, filed with the Illinois railroad and warehouse commission, showB the capital stock to be $2,000,000 unfunded debt, $1,848,244 liabilities, $8,023,244 number of employes, 251 amount paid employes, $135,937 total income, $249,173, of which $54,648 is from passenger traffic and $194,525 from freight operating expenses, $229, 037 taxes, $8,600 additional expenses, $5,988 net income over operating expenses and faxes, $11,536

W. Tineey the Baltimore & Ohio passenger agent was here yesterday. President McKeen and Col. R. W. Thompson went to Indianapolis yesterday in the private car.

Mr. John Murphy an employe of the Midland shops at Paris, married this week Miss Kate Reddy of that city.

Engine 176 which was damaged in the Greenville wreck this week was brought here yesterday for repairs.

G. W. B. Moorland of the St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba came here yesterday to assist in making arrangements for the Dakota excursion.

It is stated that the general managers of the various Indianapolis roads will get together shortly to see if steps cannot be taken toward ridding the city of scalpers and brokers, who are, and always have been the ruination of the passenger business at that point.

Yandalia freight train No. 4, now leaves Indianapolis with thirteen cars regular, and the train is often increased by extras. This being the beginning of the oyster season, tne heavy winter work has begun, and from now until next Marsh the trainmen may look for extras from the east.

Indianapolis Sentinel: The Bee Line people, for the last twenty-five years, have made it a practice to see that any employe who is injured on the road, is properly cared for until he recovers, and in case such an employe dies, his funeral expenses have invariably been borne by the company: and employes on the Indianapolis & St. Louis road have been given to understand that the same rule will be observed on that road. This humane action on the part of the company is highly creditable, and the more

Railway Dining Cars.

With the increasing railway accommodations, which at this day surpass anything ever before known in.the Mm« line, a rivalry has grown up which cannot fail to produce some unpleasant feeling between the contestants for superiority. This rivalry is between depot restaurant keepers and the railway companies. The railroads have not failed to parallel their other accommodations with excellent dining cars. The wide usage in the west and the gradual introduction upon eastern roads make the question arise whether this innovation is likely to supersede to any considerable extent the ordinary station restaurants. Viewing the fact that each year brings increased facilities which are adopted by the car builders and consequent better accommodation

toi

passengers the outlook for the station restaurants beginB to look misty. In coming years the cloud may grow darker and we will witness the outgoing of restaurants in favor of the railway dining car. -Thus far the popularity does not seem attributable to time saved in making stops. For as stops have to be made occasionally for examination of wheels and the taking of water and fuel, this point becomes minute. But the supersedence of the dining car will be on account of the leisure at the command of the eatar, he not being compelled to gulp down a meal in ten minutes,-the time usually allowed by trains when stopped at way stations. The longer the railway dining car is in use the greater will be the clamor raised against it? abolishment. Statistics show thai these firs are growing in popularity each year, and this warrants the conclusion that they have come to stay as much as did the sleeping car fifteen years ago.

Fun. Clementina and Algernon had only been married sixty-six hours when a catastrophe occurred. On the third evening of the honey-moon, as they paced Ramsgate Pier, Clementina remarked in her poetic little way: Algernon, I think the most lovely composition of art and nature, after a well-dressed woman, is a well-dressed "Man," interrupted Algernon. "Crab" continued Clementina, utterly ignoring her youthful husband's suggestion, "and we will have one for supper to-night."
