THE VINCENNES TRIALi.
The Beginning of the Catt Murder Trial. Special to the Express. VINOKNNES,
Ind., April 2.—The case of
John Catt, for the murder of Thomas Bidgeley, at a dance given at the former's residence on Christmas night, last, was begun in the Knox circuit court Monday morning, and after the examination of a large number of witnesses and cross-firing by the lawyers In the case, the Jury took charge of the matter and retired at about o'clock yesterday afternoon, and returned a verdict last night sentencing Catt to the penitentiary for two years," It Is thought an effort will be made for a new hearing. Several witnesses testified as to the former good character of the defendant, his peaceable disposition, etc.
THE COURSE.
A number of young men of the adjoining neighborhood assembled at Catt's house to attend the dance, and came well filled with liquor, besides having a number of flasks filled with the liquid with them. During the evening several of them became very noisy and boisterous, as well as insulting, when Catt ordered them to behave themselves or quit tne premises. This they refused to do, and a' general row began, Bldgely and one or two others handling Catt pretty roughly. The crowd ran out Into the yard, pulling Catt about and thumping him, when he managed to escape from his infuriated pursuers, and going into the kitchen, grabbed a butcher knife and came on the scene of action, when he again came In contact with Bidgeley, the most boisterous of the lot, and plunged the knife into the breast of the latter, killing him almost instantly. Catt has been in Jail since the murder. He was a small farmer, and was regarded as a quiet sort of man The case ef the Summers, who were arrested at Emlson, this county, several weeks ago, charged with burning down their house, mention of which was made In the Express at the time, is now in progress "Badger," a traxnp, and one of the gang implicated In robbing a number of railroad freight cars In this city, wos arrested In Olney, 111., yesterday, and brought to this city and lodged In Jail. Special to the Express. BocKViUiE, Ind., April 2.—Hiram E. Hadley returned from Kansas Saturday. He stopped four hours with George W. Callings at Wichita and reports that place booming. Mr. Colllngs is contented with his new home. He informed Mr, Hadley that there were 785 houses built in Wichita last year and there would be that many this season. Frank Bussell Is carpentering and busy all the time. Mr. Hadley did not go to see him as he was in the country that day. A new building association has been organized by the enterprising citizens of that place, which is flourishing and it was pay day when Mr. Hadiey was there. Money loaned on contract in Wichita brings from 12 to 15 per aent., and the borrower is glad to get It at that rate. ROSKDALE, Ind., April 2.—The situation as regards the strike is unchanged. Superintendent Martin ordered the men who are occupying the company houses to vacate. Some of the families are accepting aid from the relief committee. The merchants are stocking up as usual, but are trading on a cash basis. The company is putting In a hew boiler and building an addition to the engine house. To a person not directly Interested, It appears that a compromise could be reached. Superintendent Martin is known to be a very reusonabl©» confeldcrat© g®ntl6nifcn, and no doubt, were he approached in the oroper manner, he would consider any reasonable proposition toward compromising. Also a large majority of the opolives are honorable, Industrious, upright men and good clUsens. THE RAILWAY
The 0. M. Road Ontof the Receiver's Hands.
American Express Company and the Tan.—Bine Line HeadquartersSundry Notes.
On Tuesday last the Ohio & Mississippi road, which for some time has been in the mire, went out of the receiver's hands." As stated in the Cincinnati Commercial, in obedience to the order of Judge Drummond, received on Monday by General Counsel C. A. Becker, of the Ohio & Mississippi, Captain W. W. Peabody Tuesday receipted to Beceiver Douglas for the property, and the company is now in full control of the affairs of the road. There was not much formality. Captain Peabody began signing "president and general manager" after his name instead of general manager only, and soon afte went out on the road on a routine inspection trip. That was all. Yesterday he issued his first general order as president.
It was the usual one of congratulation, with thanks to employes for past service, and a request that they continue their faithfulness. I^he first and crying need of the road, increased equipment, will now at once be supplied, and the. property will soon be on the way to prosperity over its already A No. 1 roadbed.
Work on the liogansport Extension
will necessarily be suspended for an indefinite length of time. Captain Fitch returned yesterday from South Bend, where he had been on a sort of an inspection trip over the land through which the extension will run. He reports the ground in bad condition for laying a track. Frost is yet in the ground and the weather several degrees colder than it is here. Just a week ago last Monday the last ice sunk in the lake at Maxinkuckee and two weeks ago Monday teams were driven across the lake on the ice. The late heavy rains that have fallen in that region have made the roads almost impassible. Work will not be commenced at the time calculated it all depends* upon the elements. Good weather in that district for two weeks will enable the men to begin work. The Logan is destined to become a popular road. With trains of the Vanaaiia running directly to Lake Maxinkuckee this season, this iromises to become a favorite resort, everal parties who are residents of Terre Haute and St. Louis are preparing to build neat cottages near the lake or re id
Express Matters.
The American Express company has entirely withdrawn from the Yandalia line in favor of the Adams, which will hereafter do all local and through business on points on the Van. The change which has been anticipated for some time by the two companies, was made by mutual consent. It results in a benefit to both companies, for with two companies operating over the same road the profits would be small for each. By the arrangement some restrictions which have for years held the Adams Express company are removed. The American Express continues to operate over the T. H. & L. division also over the I. & S. L.
Headquarters Established. Mr. T. D. Gantt, agent of the great Central Route, Blue Line, was in the city yesterday looking after his business interests. Is to many, the most beautiftil B&feon of the year, but to others it brings trouble" in the shape of eruptions, blotches, ulcers, itcliings, etc. We offer to all such the only purely vegetable, reliable, and safe remedy to force out all this poison. Itis nature's remedy, prepared from the roots of the forests, and nothing in its composition comes from the apothecary or chemist's Bhop. Do not take Mercury and Potash mixtures for these complaints, for they are as bad or worse than the diseases. Swift's Specific roots out the poison and eliminates it through the pores of tbe skin.
