NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS.

Clay City Chips.

Special to the Express. Clay CITY, Ind., March 11.-J. S. Goshorn and -clfe, of Center Point, are herevisiting relatives and friends. 1. B. Harris went to Bowling Green Saturday and returned Sunday. H. H. Harris Is spendlnga few days with his mother at Bowling Green. The protracted meeting at Middleberry is still in progress, up to this date. There has been one hundred and thirty accessions to the church.——Mrs. Shawacker, an old German lady, died at her son's (Louis Shawacker) Sunday morning, and was buried at the Bottros fight occurred at which one Dave out in about two minutes by John Long, the champion light weight of Mlddleberry. No harm done except that Miller carries a badly demoralized countenance, all on account of his wanting to whip some one. Mr. J. Ft Hyatt sold the Pioneer grocery yesterday to Mr. John Brenton, a young man formerly of Dick Johnson township, this county. Mr. Hyatt will engage in farming three miles north of here where he has bought one of the best farms in Clay county. Mr. Hyatt has been engaged in the grocery business here for several years, and has built up a trade that any man could look to with pride,' his kales running as high as {30,000 annually. He enjoys the confidence of the people generally, and many regret to lose him as a citizen, The secret to Mr. Hyatt's success is that he done a strictly cash business, in which others will do well to imitate him, In answer to a call from the president of the Young Mens' Republican club, quite a large number of Republicans met at Griffith's hall Saturday night for the purpose of organising. J. F. Hyatt was elected president, M. Markle, secretary J. W. Danhour, treasurer J. C. Wllber, sergeant-at-arms. B. A. Cusick, chairman of the township committee, made a telling speech In which the tariff, was ably discussed. The club, is thoroughly organlzed»andready to battle with tne foe at the ballot box.

Perrysville.

Special to the Express. PERRYSViiiLB, Ind., March 11.—Mrs.Will Dunlap, of Memphis, Tenn., is in town visiting Mrs. A. V. Jones. Mrs. Love Conner, of Springfield Mrs. Ina Welch, of Peoria, ana Miss Roberts, of Paris, 111., were in attendance at Mrs. Carter's fun-eral.—-We noticed ex-Chief of Police Stack, of Terre Haute, on our streets last Thursday. We understand one of our young ladies has taken the contract of counting the railroad ties on the C. & E. I. between Terre Haute and Atherton.—— The Coal Branch correspondent of the Hoosler State was in town Saturday getting items, and from his appearance we think he got quite a load, as the Inst we saw of him be was reeling from one side of the walk to the other, as though "bis burden was more than he could carry." The new pioprietor of the saloon was out in front of his door Saturday afternoon with his coat ofl', wanting to whip one of his best customers. Better sell the stun and let the customers do the fighting. John White has taken the room next the snloon and is running a restaurant. The Republican convention that met at Veedersbung. Fountain county, instructed forH. II. Oonley, present circuit prosecutor for Warren, Fountain and Vermillion, the other counties having done the same. Give him a clear track for the race, as he is the right man in the right place. The saloon opened out under a new name on last Thursday. The old jartles having failed to get license, they ound another man with enough cheek to apply. He had better go slow.

Oakland.

Special to the Express. OAKLAND, 111., March 11.—Mrs. T. Gllfeerson, an old resident of Oakland, died this morning. She was one of the oldest residents of this city, and a very old woman. She has been Indrm for years, and Anally died with dropsy. Coles county Republican convention Is set for March 26th. Township primaries March 22d Miss Gardner, one of tne teachers in the high school, retires from school after to-morrow.

Warren County's Ex-Treasurer. Indianapolis Journal. The Journal reprinted from the Attica Ledger, a few days ago, an item to the effect that the accounts of Mr. Philip Gunmer, ex-treasurei of Warren county, were short to a large amount, possibly so much as $16,000. We are assured upon the very best of evidence that the Ledger was imposed upon, and that in no sense could Mr. Gunmer be regarded or called a defaulter in any sum. When he retired from the office of treasurer there were cer tain unpaid tax receipts he had takeu out for parties whom he knew personally, and for which he was responsible, and other cash items, turned over to his successor, and which have been paid without question or trouble.

There waB no concealment in aDy of this, but Mr. Gunmer followed a custom prevalent in all county treasuries, and which is and has not been questioned. The following note from the present treasurer conclusively settles the matter:

WILLIAMSPORT, Feb. 8, lSvt.

The rumor'that Phillip Gunmer is I defaulter in the treasurer's office Is a mis take There was, for a short time, some ta\ receipts leit here for collection but Gunmer has settled In full and don'towe a cent In the treasurer's office.

FRANK C. FLEMING, County Treasurer.

Mr. Gunmer bears the unquestioned reputation of an honest and_ trustworthy man, and when he turned the office over to Mr. Fleming, in August last, it was in excellent condition. In a business aggregating between $500,000 and S600,000, clerical errors were discovered amounting to not more than sao.oo.

Married at Midnight.

Vincennes Sun. A runaway couple from Ingleside, ten miles above Evansville on the E. & T. H. railway, were arrested at the Union depot by Policeman Mechlin, on the arrival of the noon train, yesterday, in obedience to a telegram asking him to "ca'chem and holdem." The parties wt-re Wilborn Blankenship, aged twenty-three, and Anna Bower, aged seventeen, «luiijjhttM* of a fanner. Blankenship had been working on the farm of Anna's old man for the past four years, and had an opportuuity to

ingratiate himself on the affections of the «prl. They were kupt locked up in a room at the tJnion depot till the arrival of the 10 o'clock train last night, when Bower pere arrived. Taking in the situation at a glance like a wise gen eral he immediately ordered a mar riage license and a justice, and at 12:30 thin morning the twain were made one. The tragedy ends heie.

'Vand&Ha Engines.

The' total number oi engines employed on the Vandalia is nearly one hundred. Of this number eleven are used as freight engines on the east end, (between Terre Haute and Indianapolis) and five engines are used for passenger purposes, making a total of sixteen on the east end. The west end (between Terre Haute and St. Louis) has fifteen engines on freight and ten on passenger traffic, making a total of twenty-five regularly employed on this division. On the Logan division four engines are employed on passenger and six on freight, making ten more. There are twelve switch engines employed in the different yards along the line, and four on the coal branch raids, making a grand total of sixtv-seveo engines now in use. A number of engines used in the coal traffic are now laid up owing to the coal minere strike, otherwise the total would run up to seventy-three or sev-enty-five. There are six engines now undergoing repairs in the shops.

The storm of yesterday afternoon did considerable damage to the Van. wiaes.

T. H. & I. engine No. 2, has been sent to the shops for light repairs. Engine 44 has taken her place.

The complicated question that has been agitating the switch crews here has finally been equitably adjusted.

The west end of the I. & St. L. bridge is to be built of iron. Several other improvements are to be made on the bridge.

The small boy is making things very lively in the I. & St. L. yards, but one of them came very near not being so very lively—in fact not lively at all— j%aterday noon.

The receipts at tbe Union depot ticket office amount to $16,000 a month, a little over five hundred dollars a day. The sales at the Union depot at Indianapolis are over live thousand dollars a day, at Fort Wayne about four hundred dollars each day.

Train No. 8, leaving at 7 o'clock a. m., and running between this city and Indianapolis, has been equipped with entirely new cars which are, truly speaking, models of the car builders' art, and shine so that tbey are sometimes used for looking glasses by the casual traveler.

Mail Agent Walker, who has charge of transferring the mail at the Union depot, is making some extensive alterations and improvements in the mail room. Few would suppose it, but it is nevertheless the'fact, that Mr. Walker and his assistants handie thee tons of mail matter each day.

The American Journal of Railway Appliaces, of a recent date, gives a very full and complete description of Hunter's spark arrester, invented and patented by George D. Hunter, our fellow-townsman. Mr. Hunter conceived his plan for this valuable invention while working as a mechanic, in the Varfdalia shops. At i3 highly praised by many railway men on whose roads it has been applied, and it is slowly but surely being adopted by the first-class railways.

Personal.

President Mackey, of the E. & T. H., has entirely recovered. Mr. Gay lord Beach, of the I. & St. was in the city yestdrday.

Mr. R. A. Campbell, of the C. & E. I., went to Indianapolis yesterday. Colonel John Thomas, treasurer of the Indianapolis Rolling Mill company, is in the city.

Mr. W. C. Irwin, superintendent of bridges, of the I. & St. L., was visiting the city yesterday.

Mr. M. Lillie, a prominent engineer on the Denver & Rio Grand road, is in the city visiting friends.

Mr. H. A. Hewitt, traveling passenger agent of the Louisville & Nashville company, was in the city yesterday.

Mr. Samuel M. Stevens, grand organizer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, is back from Mississippi, and has started for Davenport, Iowa, in the interests of the order. Mr. S. is a man of great executive ability, and has been very successful as an organizer.

Rube Kilmer, the genial engineer on the Vandalia, and his fireman, George Godfrey, are making extensive preparations for a duck hunt down near the old reservoir, and propose to make a start as soon as the "ducks begin to fly." Rube has bought a long-range double-barrelled shotgun, and proposes to shoot the duck with one barrel and fill him full of salt with the other, so he will, not spoil by the time Rube gets to the spot.

Mort. Gould, clerk in Car Accountant Sleight's office, will leave shoitlv for' Minneapolis, Minn., where he takes a position with Birdsall & Co., a large wholesale glassware firm. Mort. has been employed in Mr. Sleight's office nearly three months and has become a very useful and efficient accountant and Mr. Sleight dislikes very much to part with hip services, but the advantages in the "rising west" are a great temptation, and, as Mort. is a strict believer in the "early bird catching the worm," he is going to be on hand early. Mr. Joseph Cashmore, now having charge of the car records of the Terre Haute & Southeastern, will be Mr. Gould's successor.

Prince Victor is to visit the exEmpress Eugenie in England. He is

Violent.

Corrosive sublimate is the usual form of mercury given for blood and skin diseases, and it is one of the most active and violent poisons. A case is on record of the death of a child from the effects of corrosive sublimate sprinkled on an excoriated surface. Taken in small doses for a length of lime, it graduallv settles in the tissues and bones, producing mercurial rheumatism and other diseases equally as painful. Persons who have been poi soned in this way, or who suffer from any blood complaint or skin humor, should by all means take a course of Swift's Specific, which is the only vegetable preparation which will eliminate this poison from the system. Send for a copy of Treatise on Blood and Skin Diseases, free.

POTASH

Iodide of 1'otassiuixi is one of the strongest of the minerals used in medicine, and has produced much suffering In the world. Taken for along time aua in large doses, it dries up the gastric juices, impairs digestion, tbe stomach refuses food, and the patient declines in health and weight. Persons with Blood or Skin Diseases should be careful how they take these mineral poisons,

HN

in most In

stances the effect of them is to almost permanently impair the constitution. To take the place of these poisons we offer you a safe, sure, prompt and permanent relief from your troubles. Swift's Specific is entirely a vegetable preparation, and It is easy to convince you of Its merit.
