OUT ON A STRIKE.

The Miners of the Brazil District Klek Against a Reduction.

THEY ABE WILLING TO ARBITRATE, HOWEVER.

r# An Insane Miner Cuts the Throats of His Wife and Sister-in-law, Bat Not

Fatally—News From the Neighborhood.iv'

BHAZIL, Ind., February 28.—The anticipated strike of the miners consequent on a reduction of 25 cents on the ton, to take effect March 1, is on. The miners were notified of the reduction by the operators a few days ago, and held an enthusiastic meeting at the court house, at 10 o'clock this morning. The meeting was conducted with becoming spirit, the prevailing sentiment being to arbitrate. Accord' lngiy a committee of six mi' ners was appointed to confer with a like number of operators at once and determine the matter by arbitration. This committee consisted of Wm. Lowry, Wm. Gait, Sam. Anderson. Maurice Gray, lames Morrisom and Owen Quigley. Just what the result of arbitration will be It is Indefinite to surmise. Meanwhile the miners await the call of the committee to take any further steps. In a conversation with some of the miners your correspondent ascertained that the miners expected a reduatlon of 10 per cent., or even 15, and that work would have continued uninterruptedly had the operators asked only that much but 25 cents was too much and the miners were disposed to Indicate emphatically as much. The rely upon the justness of their claim for a speedy adjustment of the difference, thinking there must be some policy in asking it which will appear if a reduction of 15 cents is submitted at once and good naturedly.

The price paid during the winter, $1.00 a ton, nas had the effect of bringing a good many miners Into this district and now any strike will be unusually severe on account of the number thrown out of employment. There Is a growing feeling that a sliding scale, that is, a scale regulating the price of winter and summer mining, should be adopted. It would do much to prevent the periodic recurrence of such differences between operators and miners.

George Faulkner cut his wife's throat seriously, though not fatally, at noon today. He also inflicted a severe wound on the face and neck of her sister, who was making her home with them. Fortunately the wonnds are not fatal. Faulkner is a miner, about thirty-three years old, and has lived in Brazil almost all his life. He is of unsonnd mind, and had given evidence of it from time to time for several months past. An effort was made to iilace him in the insane asylum, but the authorities there objected, because the symptoms indicated epilepsy. Legal steps were pending before last session of court to have him declared Insane, but the case was continued. The petition came from his fath. who lives here. Perhaps the dangerous feature his insanity has assumed will have something to do with hastening the decision. He lived haplly with his wife and worked in the mines as opportunity offered and, while his mind appeared unbalanced to the casual observer, he never became offensive before. He submitted quietly to arrest and Is now in jail.

The Messenger of this week gives your correspondent quite a raking over, but we understand the reason of this quite well. We exposed a grievous fault of one of the editors thereof ,a few days since, and the truth in such cases is always unpalatable to the guilty party.

There was a slight wreck on the Van at the crossing Tuesday nigbht delayingtNo 4 about an hour and a half. There was a regular blockade and No. 7 bad to wait somo time until the track was clear.

Rev. Molntyre's lecture at the Congregational church, last Tuesdsy night, did not draw a very large orowd, owing, probably. to the fact that the children's entertainment was held in his own church, and there was a large crowd in attendance there, The subject, "The Sun," would of course be uninteresting to children, but those who attended were quite well pleased. Mr. Mclntyre is a good talker, and can make any subject interesting.
