Our merchants are enjoying a fine trade and everybody is happy. The M. E. Sunday school will have a grand Christmas tree at the Methodist church, Christmas eve.
Miss Minnie Williams will be married at four o'clock to-morrow, In Sullivan, to Mr. L. F. Benefleld, of Pleasantvllle, Ind.
Judge Buff came over from Bloomfield yesterday where he has been holding court for the last few weeks. He will commence court here next Monday.
Sullivan Sampler.
Special to the Express. Vincbnsks, Ind., December 22.—An hour's ride on the E. A T. H. railroad, one of the smoothest and best roads In the stale, brought us to this beautiful little city, the oldest town In the state. The first man we met on stepping from the train was the Rev. M. M. C. Hobbs, presiding elder of the Vincennes district, Indlanaconference of theM. E. church. Mr. Hobbs, like the kind and social gentleman that he is, received us in a manner that at ouce made us feel at home at the old post. The old low French style of buildings is rapidly going to decay, and new ones, of a oetter style, are being put In their place. People who are coming to Vincennes of late are full of enterprise and energy, and everything seems to be on the "boom." Among the persons who have came here In the tost few years, we met to-day the Bailey Bros., formerly of Sullivan connty, and who are conducting in a very energetic manner the Vincennes News, one of the best papers in "these parts," barring its politics. We noticed Frank Shannon and W. A. Markee, both Sullivan county boys. The former is a rising young lawyer and the latter proprietor of the finest drugstore in the city. We should not forget to mention that we also met in our rambles Charley Pagett and W. H. Givens, both of Sullivan couutv formerly. Vincennes has one of the finest court houses in the state, and of which she may well feel proud, especially when it is paid lor— which will probably be some time yet. The opera house is a very neat building and large enough to accommodate the amusement loving people for the present. The school a-ja church buildings are large and comfortable and area credit to any city. Vincennes is well supplied with newspapers. The Sun Is issuing a dally and the Commercial anticipated issuing a daily oi, the first of theyear. We should judge thu appearances that the Commercial is getting the lions share of advertising. Vincennes Is the home of Congressman Cobb, the god of the Democracy in this county. We learn that he is desirous of going to congress again, but Green county is anxious to dl viae honors with Knox and will insist on sending the Hon. Andy Humphreys the next time. Andy's "wah reoord" is such as suite the Democracy of Greene and Sullivan, and we may-expect a small war in the Democratic eamp as the election approaches. ~*r

The paragraph in our Tuesday's letter, saying that John Bookman was locked up on a cnarge of stealing wood, was entirely erroneous as far as Mr. Bockman is concerned. His name was confounded with that of another, person. Bockman is a straightforward, Industrious young man, and of an excellent family.
The Express has said something recently about the capacity of the mills of Terre Haute. Well, Vincennes has three roller process flouring mills, andanother under course of construction. They have a capacity of 1,200 barrels of the best flour per day, using 5,000 bushels of wheat, every twenty-four hours, or a total capacity of 1,600,000 per annum.
Last night your correspondent telegraphed the Express about counterfeiters. about 4 o'clock, while the parties were in their beds. John Kilfoil, one of the party, is supposed to have got possession of the bogus ne passed, innocently, and having been imoiblng quite freely was somewhat nimble. He is a man who stands well in the city, and owns considerable property, and the announcement of his complicity astonished all who knew him. The others—James Hart, James Summers and Mary Sanders, have been going wrong for some time. The latter two are supposed to be the manufacturers of the coin, and that they brought itdown with them from Sullivan county a few days ago when they made their aPJ?eat*a,1°« hnro. 'TWiroman Bar-1 aers antrJas. Summers were to have been married here, but they met with some difficulty in gettingthe neeessarypapers, and the nuptials were declared offfor the time being, but license might as well have been issued, as they were found enjoying matrimonial relations when arrested so early in the morning. Summers is just out of the penitentiary. Hart is a "slick"one of unsavory reputation and the gentle, cooing Miss Sanders is up to the tricks and ways that are dark and vain— a sly confederate. The posse will be brought before United States Commissioner Charles G. McCord, to-day, for trial. Something near $180 was found In the possession of all except Kilfoil, and the stuff is all brand-new, fresh from the mint. At this writing the result of tbe examination is not known, but Marshal Mcjiride says they must go. This has been strictly a home enterprise, and our officers are deserving of full credit in the capture.

Special to the Express. SuiiLiVAN, Ind., December 22.—Quite a number of our merchants have received in the last few days iu payment for goods counterfeit dollars. They were a pretty fair looking dollar and were calculated to deceive one unless he took particular notice. They are supposed to have been brought into town by some of the parties who seem to be traveling trying to gain a living by shoving the queer. The parties have probably left town and we will not be likely to be bothered with them for some time.

Special to the Express. Carlisle,Ind., December 22.—The readers of the Express will notice that we have been visiting Ibis week and among other places we have visited is the beautiful little town of Carlisle, situated about midway between Terre Haute and Vln cennes. It contains about A00 inhabitant* and is noted for a number of different things of importance.
First it has more pretty girls to the square rod that any town fn the state second, it has nice and comfortable schools and churches third, it has two ood flouring mills, one owned by Akins Jros., and the other by Thomas Hardy and both doing a good business fourthi it is surrounded by one of the finest farming communities in the state and is full of live and energetic merchants. Some of the leading firms are, Akin & Sons', A1 Malon (the fat boy) dry goods, Geo. Whlpps, W. J. Curtner & Co., drugs, and J. M. warnes, notions and postmaster The leading doctors are, E. D. Denigan, W. A. Lisman, J. N. Young and J. M. Mathews. There is Only one lawyer In
ft
Golden Ruld, namely, "Do unto others as vou would have them do unto yoh." There is a good Odd Fellows and Masonic
lodge and "both are in a flourishing condition. The only manufacturing side of the flouring mills is a broom factory, lately started by, Wibb & Helms, two of the most energetic young men it has been our good fortune to meet for some time. The boys have not got fairly started as yet, but will succeed, as they surely deserve to do. The people of Carlisle should encourage them, as it is an enterprise that lb calculated to bring some money to the town. There is one good shoe store conducted by Steve Hackney, and a harness shop by Davidson 4 Jenkins. C. B. Cummins runs the only bucket shop, and Rotramell & Gwin are always ready to pay cash for produce and of late have been doing a land office business buying corn at 85c a bushel. MoClanahan & Brocaw, of Sullivan, have lately started a branch clothing house here and are dealing out clothing in both iarge and small quantities everyday.
This is also the home of the Hon. H. N. Helms, one of the trustees of the reform school. It is also the home of the Hon. Charles T. Akin, who won for himself an enviable reputation In the house of representatives last winter, as many of the readers of the Express will remember. The Vincennes News of the 20th says:
It Is announced tuat Charley Carlisle will not be a candidate for re-election to the legislature." We called Mr. Akins' attention to the item, this evening, and he informed us that he had not committed himself either way as yet. He had been solicited by numerous friends to say that he would be a candidate, but he did not desire to press his claims to the detriment of any other gentleman, as uedid not think it was right to do so, and that there were a number of geatlemen in the county who were eminently qualified to fill the office. There is no possible show for Republicans to elect a man on the ticket In the county. It Is safe to say that the Democracy of the eounty will insist on Mr. Akin going back to the legislature and It is also safe to say that the Republicans will not "kick" as they are per'eetly satisfied with his course in the last session.

AYER'S
Cherry Pectoral.
No other complaints are so insidions in thell attack as those affecting the throat and lungs: none so trifled with by the majority of sufferers. The ordinary cough or cold, resulting perhaps from a trifling or unconscious exposure, is often but the beginning of a fatal sickness. Ater'8 Cheery Pectoral has well proven its efficacy in a forty years', fight with throat and lung diseases, and should be taken in all cases without delay.'
A Terrible Cough Oured.
"In 18571 took a severe cold, which affected my lungs. I had a terrible cough.and passed night after night without sleep. The doctors gave me up. I tried Ayeb's Cherry Pec
which relieved -my lungs, induced
regt
sleep,-and afforded me the necessary for tiie recovery of my strength. By the continued use of the Pectoral a permanent cure was effected.- I am now 62 yearr old, hale and liearty, and am satisfied your Cherry Pectoral, saved me.
Horace Fairbrothes."
Roekingham, Vt., July IS, 1882.
Croup. —A Mother's Tribate. While in the country last winter my little boy, three years old, was taken ill with croup it seemed as if he would die from strangulation. One.of the family suggested the use of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, a bottle of which was always kept in the nouse. This was tried in small and frequent doses, and to our delight in less than half an hour the little patient was breathing easily. The doctor said that the Cherry Pectoral had saved my darling's life. Can you wonder at our gratitude? Sincerely yours,
169 West 128th St., New York, May 16,1882.
I
hare used Ayer's Cherry Pectoral in my family for several years, and do not hesitate to.pronounce it the most effectual remedy for coughs and colds we have ever tried.

No case of an affection of the throat or lungs exists which cannot be greatly relieved by the use of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, ami it will always cure when the disease not .'ilremiv beyond the control of medicine.
