The Turners held their monthly social at Turner hall on Sunday night. They will give an entertainment at the Opera house some time in May. The programme will consist of musical and athletic exercises.
Will White will use a gas engine to run his ice cream machine this summer. There is no boiler attached, steam being dispensed witb,*nd motive power furnished by an explosion of gas and air.

A. J. Knapp, contracting agent of tlie T. H. & L., at Logansport, was in the city yesterday.
John J. Lnndis, the I. & St. L. agent, who has been at hi* home in Indianapolis Eeveral weeks past, eick, went on duty again yesterday.
In the month of March fifty-five miles of wire fence was built on the line of the IcdiaLspolis & St. Louis road and twenty seven car-lotds of new steel rails laid.
Local travel cn the I. & St. L. road is becoming so heavy that Superintendent Gale is seriously contemplating the feasibility of putting on another day train.
The E. & T. H. folks yesterday morning began work on the new pasrenger depot at Evansvillc, which whn complet ed will be one of ib$ handsomest in the Sate.
Daring the month of March the Vand^lia handled on th~ main line, a total of 27,604 losded cars, and on the Logan division 2,227. and average on the former of 890J, and on the latter 70J.
Frank Hudeon has taken a position as private secretary cf President W. R. McKeen. He is a worthy and meritorious young man, and cannot fail to give tbe most excellent satisfaction.

The suit of Charles O'Connor to throw tbe I. & S. road into the hacdit of a receiver, pet lor a hearing yesterday before Judge Grefiham, has been postponed until Monday, April 10, and Judge Gresham intimates that possibly he will not on that date ba able to take up the case.
The day express east over the I & St. L. rod, duo here at 4:05 p. m. Saturday evening, oihde the itiu from Maltoou to Indianapolis in three hours and fifty five minutes, waking thirty one stops. The train was hauled by engine No. 42, Kim ell cogineer, and had just come out of the shops, rebuilt.
The E. T. II. corstrnction train which has been off since the l*t of January, was p!«cd in rervice yesterday, thereby giving employment to about twenty-five men. An increase was also made in the number of pection men employed aloDg the line, fifteen being tbe extra force thus put to work.
A new sleeping-car and dining-car as as well, for a construction train, have u^t been turned out of the shopS of the I, & St. at Mattoon, which are very complete and handsome for this class of service. The diniDg car is so fins a turn out that Superintendent G.ile thinks of taking it iu place of his private car to travel io.
About the busiest railroad man in these parts is Road master McCutcheon of the E. & T. H. The discharge of his numerous duties keep him on the rosd constantly, and he has become almost a stranger to Terre Haut«. He went down to Evansville yesterday morning, put the men to work on the uew depot, and then returned home to vote.
By Associated Press. OFF THE TRACK Cincinnati. April 3.—Tho west-bound train on °tbe Little Miami road was thrown from the track three miles west cf Xenta, Ohio, this afternoon. Livingstone, engiueer John Craft, fireman, ftnd Tom Monigan, the brakeman, were injured, the former very seriously.
WRECKED.
Cairo, 111., April 3.—A south bound train on the Wabash lailroad, on Saturday night, rau through a bridge just south of Vienna, throwing nine loaded Core into the creek, destroying tixty feet of the bridge, and killing a brakeman named Musser. All trains on this end of the road are delayed twenty-four hours.
AN UNLUCKY ENGINE.
Wheeling, W. Va April 3.—About noon to-day engine Nrt. 11 of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad. Lon Smith engineer, ran over Mrs. Sarah Smith, aged 49 yours, at Benwood junction, five miles below this city, instantly killing her. The coroner's jury rendered a verdict that death was due to her own negligence.
Just af.er this accident the same engine collided with a stock train on Bellaire bridge, over the Ohio river, wrecking tbe rear car and killing and wounding several head of cattle. The tender of engine No. II was thrown from the track, delaying travel several hours.

Tbe Turner societies of this district will hold a grand turnfest, st the fair grounds, in August next.
The distillery made an export ship ment of 280 barrels of spirits to Marseilles, France', last week.
Chief Russell reports 31 gas and 714 gasoline lamps unlighted during March.

Notice is. hereby given that the new dog law will (to into effestt April 1st, 1882. Previous to that time every person wishing to own or harbor a dog must report the same to the Township Trustee, and pay Si each for every male and & each for every female dog over six months of age, and for each dog more than one the sum of 82 each. The Trustee will then issue a metallic chcck to the owner of each dosr" registered and numbered, and no check shall be used on any dog other than the one for which It was issnea by the Trustee, and any attempt to evade this provision shall bs held to be a misdemeanor, and be punishable by a fine of not more than twenty-five dollars. The constables of the various towns and townships will then proceed to kill all dogs having no checks. Persons own iug does will take notice and secure their checks before tbe time expires, as the law will be strictly enforced.
