Presentation of a Gold Snuir Box to the Rev. Father Doyle. Editor Express.

Last Sunday afternoon the Young Ladies' Sodality of 8t. Joseph's Catholic Church presented the Rev. Father Djjle with a beautiful gold snuff box as token of their respect and veneration. Enclosed in the snuff box was a ten dollar gold piece. Father Doyle leaves to-day for Trenton, N. J. His loss will be deeply felt by all the members of the congregation. Hie stay among ua haa been far too short, and may his return be speedy. There never waB a clergyman in this pariah who was BO highly esteemed as Father Doyle. The poor of the congregation and also the sick will mi-s him more than all. He was like a miuis'ering angel to those in distress. His good qualities were unbounded. Childlike, yet a man of the deepest learning charitable without ostentation beloved by all, he was the right man in the right place. Yet we have to part with hiia. May his days of sorrow be 6hort, and that of his joys be everlasting. VERITAS.

Cel. R. W. Ttionjpson's Lecture at jttbtiry 1'bnrcb Sunday Klgbt. Sacday evening Hen. R. W. Thompson lectured at Asbury Ch&rch on the stiV ject of ''Missions." There was a large attendance considering the disagreeable weather. The.audience was an appreciative one acd lislened to tbe lecture with great attention.

After the opening exercises, Mr, Thompson was introduced andtiommehced speaking by relating the theory of tbe formation of the world* from tbe elements. The advocates cf this theory fail to explain the laws which governed them. There must heve been a being higher than earthly that commanded the formation of the world.

Tbe Egyptians believed in a multiple of gods, and of gods in animals. In fact, all the nations of antiquity were pollytheist?, or believers in many gods.

We h«ve obligations to all mankind. Our responsibilities are to endeavor to improve the condition of all mankind by giving to them Christianity. It has been said that the human race is becoming more and mere degraded, bnt this i9 untrue. This can be scccunted for very easily. ChrL-lianity has benefitted us greatly. In the darkness of amiquity there existed nothing bat wrong and oppression. .When Chiiet came the equality of mankind w^a promulgated out of this everything has had its source.

In the sixteenth century, in the minds of great reformers, there evolved a new religion, Protestantism, which has revolutionized tbe entire world. Since Protestantism, nations have chaDged, people have changed, io fact, everything has changed. In time Protestantism w'll reigu universally throughout the whole

The Anglo-Saxon race is aeaUned to control the world. Wherever the English speaking people go they carry ^ith them the open Bible. Other nations fco struggling for the light which we are now eDjoying. Above politicel problems (and we have many of them) ia Christianity. It is our duty to instruct the lower class of humanity.

Tha Euphretes valley, dotted once with great cities, is now desolate. The ancient cities are only marked by ruins, and inhabited by Arabs, who pitch tents upon the ruins. Babylon, Assyria, Media and Persia have all passed away. Within that valley, probably the-most fertile in the world, there exists no civilization, no education, no human happiness. Why is this? Has it been reserved for us to populate these districts?

On both sides of us are the old nations. The light of Christianity goes out from UB to all nations. The missionary field is the broadest and most important for ua all. We must live for society. Na tions are becoming to feel brotherly love. In our position we feel the circle of- responsibility and duty enlarged. There are large fields of mission at home. The negroes who have lately been emancipated should be instructed to fill their places of eitizenship. There are immense multitudes of people coming to the United States. We extend our arms to them we welcome tbem, and we should extend the onen Bible to them. So long as the Bible is kept open there is no danger of the future.^ Tbe missionary money compared^ with the money expended for trivial things, dwindles into insignificance. L3t us not shrink from our duties and responsibilities.

After Mr. Thompson had concluded, Kev. Greene made a few remarks. He desires to bring the subject of "missions" before the people many times this year.

Resolution*.

At a meeting of tbe "Vandalia Lino" employes held March 25.b, 1882, the following resolutions were adopted:

Resolved, That we tender to his family our sincere sorrow, and deeply sympathize with tbem in their affliction.

Resolved, That the daily papers and Weekly Banner be requested to publish a copy of these resolutions, and that a copy be also sent to the family of the deceased.

The organization of the bicycle club has been postponed indefinitely, or at least until the weather becomes settled enough to admit of practice. Prospects are good for a large membership.

The meeting of tbe Young Men's Republican club at 0:i?ct»l Hall last •aight was very larga and enthusiastic, there being fully three hundeed and fifty in attendance. J"

The president, J. O. flard^sty, called the meeting to order, and introduced I. N. Pierce, who, in a veiy strong and interesting speech of thirty minutes, ehowed why it was to the interest of .every young man to belong and woik with the Republican party. Also showing the difference between the two great paitiee.

R. S, Tennsnt made a few remark!*, but declined to make a speech. H. C. Neviu io a routing speech showed very clearly the euperiority of the Re* publican party over the democracy and gave a descriptiou of local issues of this campaign.

Dr. Richardson gave-a very logical tpeecb, showing why the Democracy put at the head of the ticket a young man, thereby attempting to draw from'the ranks of the young R-publicans tbe personal friends of tha-candidate.

J. O. Jones gave a glowing description of the progress oj the Republican parly. The meeting then adjourned till Saturday night.

An Enviable Reputation.

It is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of the well known chemists. Joseph Burnett & Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a place beyond that occupied by anj other similar manufactured goods in this country.

Their Cocoaine for the hair, and a superior Cologne water, have become famons for their excellence.

In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence qf their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These are published ia Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distributed gratuitously by the trade.

All respectable dealers sell Burnett's eeleot goods, and all lovers of choice things will do well to buy tbem in preference to the cheap and iiapure articles now in the market.
