Hair Vigor
FOR RESTORING {3RAY HAIR TO IT3 NATURAL VITALITY AND COLOR.
It is a most agreeable dressing, which 4s at once harmless and effectual, for preserving Uio hair. It restores, with the gloss and freshness of youth, faded or gray, light, and red hair, to a rich brown, or deep black, as may bo desired. By its use thin hair is thickened, and baldness often though not always cured. It checks falling of the hair immediately, and^pauses a new growth in all cases where the glands are not dccayed •while to brashy, weal or otherwise diseased hair, it imparts vitality and strength, and renders it pliable.
The Viaon cleanses the scalp, cures and prevents the formation of dandruff and, by its cooling, stimulating, and Boothing properties, it heals most if not nil of the humors and diseases peculiar to the scalp, keeping it cool, clean, and soft, under which conditions diseases of the scalp and hair are impossible.
As a
Dressing for Ladies' Hair
TheVloon is. incomparable. It is colorless, contains neither oil nor dye, and will not soil white cambric. It imparts an agreeable and lasting perfume, and as an article for the toilet it is economical and unsurpassed ii its excellence.

A STRANGE STORY1
The Romance of tire Pretty Female Book Agent, Well 7 Known in Terre Haute.
The Fair Cafcrasser Whose Life Has
Tbe strangeness of the sound amid such surroundings always insured immediate and interested attention to ber business Of course tbe man's first impulse was to declare that he had more books then be could read already, or that he bad given bis subscription to another agent, or eome other of the convenient excuses with which men are wont to protect themselves agaicst the book agent. When he turned and saw the picture at his sid*, however, the chances were an hundred against one that he abandoned his purpose and felt ashamed of it. The young lady was fluent, vivacious and possessed a strange combination of the earnest and the kittenish in her demeanor. If it waa art she was a wonderful
AND CHXJEL ABT1ST.
The would-be victim, generally fid'etger to persuade a book agent to call further up ibe street, in her case was only apprehensive as to her going away, aod spared no ingenuity to prolong tbe interview. Remarkably bright in discussing 1be work ia hand, however, she always proved dull and reticent when any digression was attempted, and having obtained the subscription, as she did in a majority, of cases, she tarried long enough to ascertain tbe name of the man at the next door, and then immediately lost all interest in her subscriber. As an evidence of tbe effectiveness of her work, it may be stated that she secured the signatures of over half tbe lawyers of the city, who are regarded by the average canvasser as absolutely hopeless. Tbe "mashirg" young men all voted tbe charming little lady as cold as a fish, for she had a quiet way of crushing these joung hoo hoos, and at tbe same time doing nothing which might lose a subscriber or give an opinion other than tbat she was a perfect lady. To a fatherly journalist sbe related something of herself, saying that she resided at New Haven, Connecticut, that she came here under the care of her mother, as one of a company of lady canvassers engaged -by the publishers, and tbat her purpoee was to earn enough money to enable her to complete ber education at an eastern college. Those who observed her closely, however, during the latter part of her stay were satisfied that her smiles had' little heart in them, and that there was a large element of sadness in her young life.
The young lady's name is Miss Lilian Hine, and her mother while living in New Haven boarded a number of Yale students, among them being a Chinese Prince named Tung, who had been sent to this country by his government for education. Tong was a young man of a rare degree of intelligence and refinement who was making his mark as a collegiate. Between him and Miss Lilian there grew an affection, which seemed all the more intense for the strangeness of its assortment. By virtue of his nobility Tong enjoyed an almoBt unlimited amount of money, and by nature generous, he allowed no want of his Caucasian sweetheart to go unsupplied. Mrs. Hine and her daughter on one occasion accepted his invitations to visit New York, where they were entertained in princely style.
The marriage of the lovers was agreed upon, but no date was set As one of the preliminaries, and as one of the greatest sacrifices it was in his power to make, Prince Tong had his queue cut off. This so scandalised some other young Chinamen to whom the knowledge came, that they wrote to the powers that be in the land of tea and rice.
About tbat time Mrs. Hine began to fail in health, and regarding it as necessary that she have change of climate, she and her daughter entered into, the canvassing arrangement. Tbe separation from her lover had a very depressing effect upon the young girl, as she knew of the very serious obstacles. that would be interposed to the marriage of Prince Tong with an American girl. Sbe devoted herself to her work with a will, but was apathetic as to all else. While dreading what might happen to thwart their purposes, she received a letter an-, nouncing that icformation of his betrothal and his renunciation of hi* queue had been sent to his home government by the meddler above alluded to. ..This distressed her greatly, and explained fully the sadness which so many suspected. Shortly after she received another letter, and for several days thereafter she wept almost constantly. It was this demonstration which provoked a relation of the etory by her mother. The letter informed her that the Chinese government, indignant at what tbey regarded as a renegade course on the part of the ward whom they were educating here, and on whom they based great expectations, had ordered his immediate
RETURN TO CHINA,
and the tone of the order left little room to hope for a return to this country. Tong was sjon to start for borne, and la asked Miss Lillian to meet him at Chicago and say farewell. It was thiB which caused the demonstration of grief. Sbe telegraphed him that it would be impracticable to meet bim at Cnicago, but that she and her mother were coming to this aity, where he might stop for a day. They came, and he met them bere, as will be remembered. After a sad good by they separated and went on to the Pacific. She became very ill, and the news came soon afterward that she was at the point of death with brain fever. After along siege she rallied and regained sufficient strength to work, but when she appeared here recently, to deliver the books, she was strikingly different from the fresh and beautiful creature of last mid-sum-mer.
And here follows the moat terrible part of the story. Only a short time ago came the announcement that a Chinese prince, who had been pursuing his studies in an American college, had been recalled to his home, and had been beheaded by order of the emperor because of certain renegade conduct, notably the cutting off of his queue. If this were Prince Tong— and the circumstance* mcke it almost certain that it was—the story of .Lillian Hine'a love has more of romance, novelty and tragedy in it than novelist could vfell devist'.

Their Oocoaine lor the hair, and a superior Cologne water, have become famous for their excellence.
In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not shoij better evidence ot their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels is the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand'Book,an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distributed gratuitously by the trade.
