Since then the firm have paid tbe newspapers of the United States over twelve million dollars, of which nearly -every paper in the Nation received a portion. The fire de stroyed some valuable papers, and many others interesting as reminiscences of the past business of the firm, but which, in reality, were rather in_ the way of the present business. Their new offices are in the center of business,-and are well adapted to the business. iijf & Tb« Knigtita of Honor.-

THE BROOM BRIGADE.

A Xofit Successful Entertainment by the Congregational Laiies.

Tbe ladies cf tbe Congreeationsl church have established & reputation for giving first class entertainments, and when to this is added tbe novelty of seeing a bevy of charming young ladies go through all the evolutions of real soldiers, it is no wonder that the church parlors were crowded last evening. Over $135 were taken in at tbe door and it is estimated that the total profits will be in the neighborhood of $200.

Snpper was served from air o'clock until half-past eight, and the tables were liberally patronized. To every person eating sapper1 a neat souvenir wa* presented, in the shape of a unique Japanese cup and saucer. The main feature of the evening, however, centered in the drill of the broom brigade. 'Hie dense crowd was requested to step back to a certain line, to give the drillers room, and with Charley Williams at tbe piano, the redoubtable *'B. B." marched in with tbe gallant Major Smith in command.

G. Watson, Anna Ball, Lucia Brokaw, Laura Richardson and Cora Weatfail. Miss Mamie Allen acted as fiist sergeant, and shfe marched to the front with Ihe grace and precision of a true soldier. Her manner and bearing elicited much praise, as, indeed, did the entire performance.

The unifom of tbe brigode consisted of black dress, Martha Washington caps#, jaunty dusting caps with red tassels, white belt* with the initials "B.B." worked in red, cardinal red hose, dipper*, and carrying neat brooms, ornamented with blue bows. The applause at the entrance was very enthusiastic, and the movements throughout the entire drill were dutly apt predated and liberally applauded.

Tbey then went through the manual— not of arms—but of brooms, including the present, carry, right. shoulder, ana charge. These were all well executed. The foot movements made up tbe greatei* portion of tbe drill, and could not well be excelled. Tbey formed files from fours, wheeled by fours, countermarched, formed stars, a cros.*, and tbe labraynth. At the conclusion of the drill the brigsde was faced to the audience, saluted and then 'marched out to continuous appiause. Tbe young folks, find old ones too, for that matter, then enjoyed a delightful social, lasting until alter ten o'clock. The success of this entertainment will only whet the public appetite for a similar one in tbe near future.

FAHBY DAYEHPOBT.

There are but few living ac!reuses more thoroughly deserving of a high ition in the profession than Miss aveBpart. Of artistic parentage and possessed of a fine figure and a good voice, and a fare at once beautiful and' capable of the most varied expression, she was richly endowed with all natural advantages. But throughout her whole career she b^ss never been satisfied to relyupon her gifts she has studied with unremitting (diligence, and conscienciously paid the closest attention to the most minute details. Half the actresses of today, in selecting their dresses are sufficiently pleased if they are called handsome, and if, after consultation with their dressmakers, they are convinced that they are made in the prevailing mode. With Miss Davenport, upon the contrary, the choice of costume 1«, as it should be, a matter cf graver importance in place of trusting to the caprice of a dressmaker, she examines old and new illustrations and time-honored engravings, in order that she may adapt herself in every point to the character she is about to personate, or the period of history she is to illustrate. Thus in every drama in which she apprara there is a singular appropriateness in everything nothing is left to chance or forgotten ia the harry and heat of preparation. Her |natural abilities and babits of painstaking thus so happily allied, have been followed with their well-merited fruits.

An Enviable Reputation.

It is with pleasure #e allude to tbe manufactures of the well known chemists. Joseph Burnett & Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a place beyond that occupied by any other similar manufactured goods in this cCuntry.

Their Cocoaine for the hair, and a superior Cologne water, have become famous lor their excellence.

In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence of their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all tbe leading popular hotels in the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet whicb is distributed gratuitouuy by the trade.

All respectable dealers sell Burnett's select goods, and all lovers of choice things will do well to buy them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now in the m«ket.
