After some discussion as to the plan of the temperance work, the following resolutions were adopted
Resolved, That we fully indorse the action of the grand temperance council of this State in convention assembled at Indianapolis October 6th, and 7th, 1881. 1st. In its non-political party action. 2d. limits principle of removing the cause of intemperance by means of constitutional prohibition through the existing political parties. 3d. The annunciation of the principles on which, our free institutions rest, that the people have the right to be heard through a free vote on all questions effecting the public welfare in the amendment of the fundamental law of the State. 4th. That we will only vote for and labor to elect such men in our respective parties to the legislature, who will vote for the submission of the constitutional amendments to a vote of the people.
The City Government and Burglars. Editor Express. What is a city government for if it does not protect the citizens? I make no complaint about the police force. I think them good and faithful men, who do as much as could be expected of them. They are wholly inadequate to rid the city of burglarB. As many as a hundred residences have been entered by burglars within the last sixty days, Some houses, as Mrs. Stimson'B on Eighth street, have been burglarized three times.
The old English law held the houses so sacred that burglary was punished by death. When one thinks of the horror of a murderous villain prowling through his house, he feels like wishing for the enforcement of the old laws.
Now then, as to the remedy: I suggest that a liberal sum—one, two or three thousand dollars, or more if necessary, be placed in the hands of the mayor or police board as a contingent fund and let them use it in employing detectives to shadow every suspected character in the city until they are caught and brought to justice, and tfcen it is hoped the criminal court will give them, instead of two years, not less than ten.
This disturbance of the houses of our citizens should be stopped, and it is a shame for a city of our wealth and power to stand an idle spectator while these infamous crimes are being repeated.

John Smith Denies that He Was Arrested for Drunkenness*
In a little bit of pleasantry the Express stated yesterday morning that the anxiety concerning the whereabouts of our old friend, John Smith, might be relieved as John the aforesaid had been picked up on Main street by a couple of police officers and placed in j»il as drank. John is a somewhat famous public character, and the fact wad thought worthy of record. John, however, took exception to the publication, and writes to the Express as follows
TERRE HAUTE, Feb. 8.
Editor Expreff DEAR SIR:—I see by this morning's Ex press that John Smith has been arrested for drunkenness. Now, this is a mistake and oar reporter has evidently beetr imposed upon. I never drink, am the high muck-a-muck of a temperance society, and in addition to this, I wasn't out of my house on the night named. I see also that John Smith had $172 in money when arrested. This is also a base fabrication and I deny the allegation and defr the allegator. I have never had $172 in my whole life, but if I had 1 might have been arrested for drunkenness. As it is, I was not. Please correct.
Respectfully, JOHN SMITH.
The following also was received: TERRS HAUTE, Feb. 8. Editor Express.
DEAR SIR: This morning's paper says I was arretted for drunkenness. It's a d—d lie, and I can prove it, and if you don't correct the statement I'll t*ke legal steps to make it warm for you. Do you hear? J. SMITH.
Also the following: TERRY HUT, Feb. 8. Editur Express:
MR. JOHN SMITH.
From far away, dreary^ Paris, (Paris is only sixteen miles away, but that sounds
ood), with its fair maidens and Terre citizens, came the following howl:
PARIS, Ills., Feb., 8.
Editor Express. DEAR SIR—This morning's issue of the Express has just reached me. In its local news I discover that John Smith has been arrested in your city for drunkenness. Now, as I very frequently visit Terre Haute I wish to state positively that I' was not arrested for drunkenness. It's true that when I do go over, like all Paris men, I go to see the animal in all its peculiar phases, but I have never been arrested yet. Please say to your readers that I was not arrested and greatly oblige,
JOHN SMITH.
In addition to this 199 letters have been received from John slating that a mistake had been made and asking that a correction be made, and one pugilistic citizen called at the office to state that if such correction was not made he'd "Wow hell out of us."
All of which is respectfully submitted.

tone Empbatic Words by a Ytonf f.ady to Her Ex-I«ver. A gentleman of this city recently found a copy of a letter written by a young lady to her discarded lover, the following being a bona fide copy of the same:
TERRE HAUTE,
Your letter was received, and read with disgust, and in reply would say, you must think I am sick. Further, you may consider cur once deep intimacy entirely dissolved. I would like to know what authority you have for calling a young lady a crocodile because her mouth isn't small? I never did like you venr much, because your coat is too short. It spoils your back view to uch an extent as to be disgusting. How could any one like a man whose pants hang away below his coat tail and look like a sail when the wind is down? Another thing, if I was you, I'd shave a little and not have hairs all over my face. I often told you that your mouth looked like a bare spot on a poodle dog, and it does. It is enough to turn the stomach of a livery horse.
You think you can whistle, and sing, and lo's of other things too numerous to mention, but you can't, When you whistle, it sounds like a sick mocking bird trying to whistle the Star Spangled Banner, and when you sing it sounds like an old pluyed out brass band in a court room.
Your legs are like elder stalks, and your feet like two leather trunks. Your nose is like a full-grown beet, and your front teeth like old ivory door knobs. Your eyes are the shape of an oyster Bhell, you are pigeon toed and as bow-legjed as a barrel hoop.
How could I like a man like that? How could uy nice girl like me love a man who is as soft as Dutch cheese? You think you Icok nice with that old stovepipe hat on. I will bet you a squeeze against a yard of red ribbon for my hair that Sampson lost that hat when he got after the lion, or it blowed off Noah's heed when he came out of the ark. You never wash your feet and tbey smell like two old hams. You never wash your neck and it is the color of chimney on a rolling mill.
You are too lazy to work and can't get enough to eat. Your ribs look like a worn out wash board and your haunch bones stick out like the prongs of an anchor.
I hope you will not answer this and save me the trouble of writing to you again. With these few lines I close. Your once loving
JANE.

THE HYERS SISTERS.
From a number of similar press noticer we take the following concerning the Hyers Sisters, who appecr here to-morrow night:
Hyers Sisters—They are tfcc queens of ang living singers we ever heard. They sweep criticisms and every sort of objections away they are phenomenal.— Pittsburg LeaSer.
Madah Hyers—One of these meteors that flash at intervals across the sky they are Bingers who can achieve the most astonishing effect.—[Cleveland Herald.
Madah Hyers— a most extraordinary voice her singing is wonderful,—[Chicago Times.
We do not believe Madah Hyers has a rival the notes that made Jennie Lind famous are ordinarily with her.—[Chicago Tribune.
Madah Hyers has full control of her voice, and can run the scale as high as she pleases.—[Phil adephia Times.
Fred Lyons, with the Hyers Sisters' combination, is the best banjo players the funniest comedian and the biggestmouthed nigger that ever crossed the East River—[Brooklyn Union. "HEARTS OF OAK."
James A. Heme's company will present the above romantic drama at the Opera Houee Monday night. The following'notice of the company appeared in a recent iesue of the St. Louis Republican:
James A. Heme and a thoroughly good company opened a season of "Hearts of Oak" at the Olympic theater last evening to a fall and appreciative hearing. "Hearts of Oak" is a very strong play and its motive and action enlist the finest sympathies of the human heart. Its domestic scenes are simply touching, its heart is noble and its moral is pure. There is no mawkish sentiment about it The action is a struggle between love and duty, the sacrifice which is a necessity is manly, and its agony sanctifies love. The whole matter of the play is pure and human, and its spirit is elevating. James A. Heme plays the leading role with fine force and effect, and Miss Katherine Corcoran as Crystal is clever nd winning and thoroughly sympathetic. The other characters are well presented by the other members of the company, and Little Crystal, by little Maud Thompson, is a gem. The spectacular features of the play are attractively presented in scenery carried by the company, "Hearts of Oak" deserves the success it has achieved and the fame it has made in the hands of Heme and his company. There will be a holiday "Hearts of Oak" matinee to-day.

An Enviable Reputation.
It is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of the well known chemists. Joseph Burnett & Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a place beyond that occupied by any other similar manufactured goods in this country.
Their Cocoaine for the hair, and a superior Cologne water, have become famous for their excellence.
In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, .and we can not show better evidence of their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distribated gratuitously by the trade.
All respectable dealers sell Burnett's select goods, and all lovers of choice things will do well to buy them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now in the market.

Be governed by this rule and there will be no mistakes or guess work, as guess work in most esses is a failure and proves iatal, in all branches of business, and If you start on the wrong track, the farther you go, or progress, the worse you are off. Be sure you are right and then go ahead. How many miserable failures can yen call to mind by guess work, yet you often submit to guess work in many of the duties and incidents of life. Are you willing to travel a road on a supposition, not knowing its destination? In short, suppose the druggist should mix his prescriptions Dy guess work, what would bathe result The answer is very plain and simple: a miserable failure. If the Doctor diagnoses your wrong, of course his treatment &nd reme* dies are wrong. It is the duty of every physician to tell and locate your disease, and tell you every symptom, without asking you a question. This Doctor Jordan does, and can do in every case, and the Doctor would advise no one to take treatment from any Doctor unless he can do this to their satisfaction. If you have to tell the Doctor, whoever he may be, all your aches, patna
and
troubles, be kind enough to tell the
Doctor what to take to cure you. Pay the Doctor for his coming and asking you what was your trouble. Then go and buy your own medicines and treat yourself. Doctor Jordan will tell you all your symptoms connected with your disease, of whatever cause or nature, it may be, free of charge at his office in this city, 326% Main street, Terre Haute, where he can be consulted from the 25th of each month until the lBt from the 1st to 24th at his home office, 11% West Washington street, Indianapolis, Ind.
