History of Philosophy.
Editor Express. The claBB in the "History of Philosophy," presided over by the Rev. Thomas Parry, met last Friday night.
Zenophanes, Parmenides and Zsno of the "Electri-Metaphjeical School" was the topic.
The object of this class is to gain a clear and definite knowledge of the philosophies of the ancients, commencing with Thales and Pythagoras—the great prototypes of the modern materialistic and pantheistic schools of to-day—and to trace the knowledge of their ideas through successive philosophies down to the present time with biographical sketches of the philosophers.
Whilst this class uses as a text book, "Henry's Epitome of History of Philosophy," it will not be confined to its use, as the course marked out by Dr, McCosh in his lectures on philosophy, will be delineated by the Rev. Parry with expositions from miscellaneous sources.
As this class is forming, any one detiring to become a member may do so by sending his or her name to Rev. T. Parry. It meets in his studio every Friday night at half past seven o'clock.

The Electric Llglit in Boston. We copy the following from the Boston Evening Transcript of December 30,1881:
It is proposed to light, a few of our rquares with the H«:tric light. This may be very well, even at an -increated cost, but sometioies theee smttll beginnings lead to very grave results, and before proceeding further it will be well to count the cu* t.
Nobody has a right to complain at the manner in which our streets *re now lighted tbere is ample light, the lanterns are kept clesn and bright, and there is no danger to life cr limb in any street or lane in the city. There is no better lighted city in the country than Boston.
It is proper to fisy in this connection that while the Brash light has ten or even twenty times the candle pewer of the pre^ent'gas burner, yet for practical use one of tbe electric lights wili not displace twenty, nor ten, nor even two of the gas light* if twenly eaa lights were grouped together one electric light would be equal to hem all, but thecandle power of the electric light would not diffuse it eelf over the space now covered by two gas burners it is a powerful light at the flame but that power ia soon lost, its rays sre reflected but a short distance it ia not a diffusive light. The train bouse of the Providence road tgqaires twelve electrJc lights, equal, we are told, to 24,000 candles, and yet it is not satisfactorily lighted. Hence it is that the Brush Electric Light Company, while claiming tbis enormous candle power for their lights, deem it necessary to place them on an average 150 feet apart, while the present gas lamps are 125 feet apart and, I think, with our crooked streets, and the dense foliage in summer on our com mons, and in maBy of our streets, 150 feet is as far apart as they can well be placed.
But without going further into a discuB sion of the merits of the electric light, propose to compare the coet of the same with the present method of lighting.
The Burgh Light Company offer to furnish their light for sixty-five cents each per night, and plsce them 150 feet apart In our mill there would be thirty lights, which would cost for each $237.50 per annum, and for the thirty lights, $7,117.50,
Tbere is now an average of thirty-six gas lights covering the same distance which the Superintendent cf Lamp?, in his report, says cost $28.29 each per an num, and for the thirty-six lights. $1,040. 04. This, then, is the difference in cost between the preseot method of lighting one mile and that cf electricity—$1,C40.04 against $7,117.50,
Let us now see what tbe difference would he ehould the electric light displace gas all over the city proper.
The Superintendent of Lamps informs us in his report that there are in the city proper 4,261 gas lights, costing $28.29 each, and in the aggregate $123, 180.70 per annum.
Placing the electric lights on an aver age 150 feet apart, it will require 3,551 lamps to cover the same territory, which at sixty-five cents each per night will cost $842,474.75.
This, then, is the difference in cost between the present system of gas lights and an entire change to electric lights— $123,180.70 against $342,474.75.

At the regular meeting of Terre Haute Lodge No. 51, I. O. O. F., held at their hall on Friday evening, January 27th, the following resolutions were reported and adopted:
This lodge is called upon to mourn the loss of our worthy brother and most excellent citizen, Past Grand John H. O'Boyle, who departed this lifa at his residence in this city on Wednesday the 10th inst.,in the 71st year of his age. Brother O'Boyle woe born in Frederick county Virginia on the 10th of January, 1812. Before his removal to the west he learned tbe tsnner's trade. In 1834 he first became a citizen of this county, locating in the village of Middietown, where he engaged in business with his brother, James H. O'Boyle, also deceased. In 1836 he removed to Merom, in Sullivan couutf, where he remained until he bccame a citizen of this city in 1849, Since his residence in this city-he has been one of its most prominent, useful and public spirited citizens, giving efficient aid and iuflueuce to many of its most important enterprises. At the time of his death Bro. O'Boyle, with one exception, was the oldest member of tbe lodge, having been initiated while he was a resident of Merom in 1848, since which time he has been a faithful, efficient and trusted member of our order. Attaching himself to our brotherhood, when Odd Fellowship was in ita infancy in this state, he has, at all times, been a faithful and exemplary member, as well as a worthy and estimable citizen, his deportment being kind, friendly and obliging. Useful in life and honored in death as a brother, well esteemed and beloved as a citizen, exemplary in his conduct, honest, amiable, kind-hearted and industrious, he has left behind him a record which will be a never failing solace to his family and friends. In view ot the loss which) this lodge has sustained by the decease of our brother and friend, and of the still heavier loss sustained by those who were nearest and dearest to him he it therefore
Resolved, That it is only a just and fitting tribute of respect to tbe memory of our depatted brother, P. G. "John H. O'Boyle, to say, that in regretticg his removal from our Lodge to the Grand Lodge above, we mourn for one who was in every way worthy of our confidence, esteem and regard.
Resolved, That we deeply condole with the bereaved widow and family of the deceased for the great loss which tbey haye sustained and commend them to the^ care of that Infinite Being who orders all things for the best aud who considers all His children.
Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to the widow of our deceased brother, and that the same after being spread upon the records of this lodge be furnished to the press for publication. A, BURNETT,

Dr. J. S. Jordan: DEAR 8nt:—Supposing that others afflicted as I have beeb may be benefitted by the knowledge and use of your remedies and treatment, I am induced to write you this communication. I was afflicted with catarrh and chronic bronchitis for nine years, which had affected my lungs and deranged my eystem until my digestive organs had almost entirely failed, so much so that often I had to take my food in liquid form. I had sinking, faint, prostrate feelings, which were alarming. Having tried numerous remedies as recommended by physicians, and without any apparent benefit, I gave up all hopes of obtaining re'ief, when I was advised by a friend to call upon you, ss she felt confident that you would be fcble to relieve me. I am glad to inform you this prediction has been more than fully verified. In a few vetks I was so I could lay down in a bed as usual. Dt\ J. S. Jordvn. Denr Sir: I cannot express my gratitude to you in rescuing me from a true consumptive's grave. The be6t Terre Haute physicians told me I could not recover. When you first came to me part of my right lung was gone. I had no expectation of ever leaving my bed, and even had my burying clothes made. You gave me words of cheer, and I thank God I am well again. I have gained over thirty pounds. I wish all sufferers from consumption could know ot your treatment. Hundreds of people, and some of the best physician in the city will endorse what 1 say in this. Use tbis as you see proper.

An Enviable Reputation.
It is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of the well known chemists. Joseph Burnett & Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a place beyond that occupied by any other similar manufactured goods in this country.
Their Cocoaine for the bair, and a superior Cologne water, have become famous for their excellence.
In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence of their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distributed gratuitously by the trade.
All respectable dealers sell Burnett's select goods, and all lovers of choice things will do well to buy them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now in the market.
