FREE PASSES.

The Banker and Broker, of the 24th, i? quite outspoken in an editorial on the para question. It says: Firet{ that ra road managers should include in their annual reports the classes they.grant passes to, subject to a vote of the stockholders. Second, that any class tber stockholders of a road authorize the managers to grant passes or special rates to, and these only should have such favors. That any such favor should be teported fully and clearly io tbe stockholders. So much for the granting as to those who accept such such favor?, they, too, should be put plainly on public record. Between railroad officials the exchange is no more than exchange of journals. Legislators and all parties occupying a judicial position by the selection of tbe public ocqflpy po--sitionn of trust that do not, under any poroible construction, consistent with honor, permit the in to accept a pass. The law gives them all expenses they are supposed to accept, and a puis of any kind is a petty bribe of the m&t contemptible kind. In the case of journals, they are, as a role, more of private enterprises than the railroads, and they do much work for railroads for which they do not get any pay should railroad managers see fit to encourage publicity of their operations and condition by {giving passes to newspaper people, in lieu of other pay, it is simply a business matter that, if duly reported to the stockholders, and ratified by them, is perfectly legitimate.

AMUSEHS STB. "Pocket Saloons"—Bad Benedict. -r r. Correspondence of the Express. BICES EXTfiAVAQirirZJi COMFAST. MARStTAT.T^ tils, Jan. 27,18&2. This afternoon, th&t most popular 7 WUliani Benedict, the Wlow whom all American burlesque?-, "Evangeline," fined $16 and cootr on two counts tbe will be predated at the Opera House, ty

the Rice company. For pretty music,' catching airs, comical situations, and

best of all the display of lovely maidens, this extravaganza has never been excelled. To-night the hurierque of "Babes of the Woods," will be presented, by special request. "goons FORBKKT."

The Indianapolis Journal says of this comicality which is to be -produced Tuesday night: "'"Rooms for Rent," which was given its first presentation in this city at English's last night, is kvery amusing light comedy, Which went excellently with the audience. The story is based on the mishaps, blunders, and ridiculous complications incident to the indiscriminate mingling of a number of peculiar characters who occupy furnished rooms in the pame building. It is cleterly written and ingeniously constructed, having EO great originality, but affording a_ number of clever people an opportunity to show their cleverness. The play is of the "Our Boarding House" order, but is a much better production than the last named. The company is composed of a number of good-leoking and competent people. Mr. I. N. Beers, on whom tbe burden of the performance rests, is a very clever light comedian. Miss Genevieve Reynolds is a handsome woman, a clever actress, and a very sweet singer, and Miss Fletcher, Miss McNeil, and Miss Johnston, and Messrs. Hoist and Hay, all deserve favor* able mention, while the remainder of the cast are satisfactory. "Rooms for Rent" will be repeated durirtg the remainder of the week, and will, probably, be well patronized.

This well known musical combination will present the celebrated muidcal burlesque, "Cinderella at School," at the Opera House n^xt Friday evening.

Industrial Items, Local and Otherili*. The new rolling mill built by Worth Brothers at Co&teeville, Chester county, commenced operation on the 22nd inst.

The iron works of Philadelphia, Pa., are all running to their fullest capacity. The greater nnmber of tbem are refusing ooders.

It is stated that a new nail mill will shortly be erected near Steubenville,Ohio, which will, contain pve hundred nsil machines. J^jlV

Charley Swarizj* a boiler, *et the nail works, is numng a severe sore throat, which has gi^en him intense pain the past few days.

George Mcrrif, of the nail works, has returned from New Albany, Ind., and is again facing his puddling furnace armed with rabble, paddle and fire-hook.

Peter Cassidy, muck sbearmsn at tbe Cliwton Mill, Southside Pittsburg, mat with an accident a few days since which will doubtless csu^e tbe loss cf his left arm.

Graff, Bennett & Co., of Pittsburgh, have put up electric light and will, keep men workirg at ni^ht to hasten the reerection of their Miilvale mili, which "was recently destroyed by fire.

The rolling mills of Youngstowo^ Ohio, consume nearly 4 000 tons oi pig iron each week. Muck bar is in active demand, and merchant iron is not made in sufficient quantities to supply the trade.

Robert, the little deaf and dumb son of John H. Reynolds, of the Nail Works, while engaged with his playmates in playing leap frog Thursday evening, accidentally fell and displared his shoulder.

The puddlers of the Chesapeake nail works, at Harrisburg, Pa., who tvA weeks ago msde a demand for an advance of fifty cents per ton have finally decided to continue work, at the old price, $4.50 per too.

The day turn force of puddlers at the nail mill worked all. night Friday, in order to have the muck rolls turned today. They will be placed in position tomorrow, and set in motion again Monday morning.

Jacob Armbruster, an employe of the mill at Benwood, West Virginia, lost one of his eyes and was otherwise injured by the bursting of a muck ball several days ago. A liberal contribution was raisd for him by his fellow workmen.

The mills of the Siemens, Anderson, steel company, Pittsburg, Pa., have shut down indefinitely owing to financial difficulties. ThiB throws over one thousand men out of employment. It is to be hoped that the difficulty will soon be adjusted and the works in operation again.

The Nail Works .Company have begun the erection of a double puddling furnace on the east side of their forge department. This firm have eighteen eingle furnaces in operation at the present time, and when the huge double mons er is completed they will have twenty pig iron consumors.

The breaking of a cylinder on one of the engines which runs the nail machines at the nail mill, caused a sudden suspension of bus ness in that department at noon Wednesday, and in consequence of their continually increasing demand for uails, tho managers employed men to wotk day and night to repair the damage as quickly as possible. The work was completed Thursday evening and yesterday mornifig at 6 o'clock^ the numerous feeders were commanded to set their machines in motion, mount their cane-bot-tomed stools and attend to the wants of the iron monsters, which, besides shaping nails, make music that is delightful to the ear of a visitor.

A boiler named Cartwright, employed at the Westerman rolling mill, Sharon, Pa., was mutilated in a shocking manner a short time Birce. It appears that a torpedo about eight inches in diameter with one quarter inch iron casing, such as are nsed by oil men as a last resort to force a flaw of oil, had been brought to Mr. Cartwngbt's furnace with the scrap iron. It beibg a strange customer, and not knowing that death lay concealed therein, it waSfjcarelsasly thrown aside for the time beifig. After tbe shell had lain in the ecrap box a few days Czrtwright thought prior tOjfsr-3 using it to break off the snoizlc, which was braes and for this purpose laid tha torpedo on a small anvil and commenced to Btrike tbe ix*sle with a hammer, when, all at once like a thunder bolt from a clear fky came a tremendous report. The torpedo was shivered in a thousand fragments. The injured man ss soon as the momentary excitement hsd subdued was convs ed to bis home and medical aid flUnKn^ned. The physicians upon exam* ination found that the l«ft hand was totally gone. The bone in the right forearm Was badly shattered, and the first finger of the tune hand blown off. Further investigation showed that a dangerous wound had been inflicted on the right knee end one of the surgeons upon inserting hia finger iBto the wound extracted therefrom about a quarter oi a pound of iron, also iraiifefous small pieces of bone. .. He has been making a pretty good thing-f this, and has managed to beep out of tbe clutches of McMuUen and our temperance Alderman, but not out of the hands of the United States Marshal of this district. That officer came down from Springfield this morning, called upon the sheriff for the keys of the jail, obtained them, took Benedict out of jail and to Springfield on a charge of selling whiky without a government license. Benedict has committed enough offences of this kind during the past year, if con' victed on all of tbem, to keep him in prison for the balance of his life, There area few other fellows in town who are known to be in the "pocket saloon" business who will have to look sharp or they will get a free ride to the state capital.
