A petition is in circulation asking the board of town trustees to purchase an engine and other apparatus for extinguishing fires also tha construction of large cisterns, and the purchase of property in which to keep fire engine, rosd tool?, etc., belonging to the town. It aska the board to issue bonds to the amount of $7,000 for the purpose. The petition is pretty generally signed by the taxpayers, and in our opinion would be universally signed by every one interested were it not that the amount stated ($7,000) is by many regarded as extravagant.

After an illness of but a few days, Miss Lens Lang died last Sunday morning at .3 a. m. from gaogrecn erysipils. She was a bright young la«Tr of twelve summers, and will be missed by her numerous friends. She was buried from, her late residence, 209 South Fourth street, in the family graveyard at Prairieton. She was the only daughter of Mr. Wm. and Katie Lang. A FRIEND.

One night this week, a lady living in the northern part of the city, fancied she heard a noise at hef front door. It b?ing quite early, she went to ihe door, and upon opening it, discovered a woman in the very act of placing on infant upon her door-step. The strange woman thus discovered, tried hard to get the lady to take the child. She gave aa a reason that the baby had been left on her door-step, with clothing, etc., but being unable to keep it, she wanted to get rid of it in thia manner. Tha lady of tha house persisted in her refusal, and the womany finally went away. At the front gate she was met by two men and the three left together. But for the timely appearanos of the lady she would probably nave been the nnwiiling reeeipiect of the little one.

No preparation ever introduced to the American public, for the relief and cure of Coughs, Colds, Sore Throat, Debilitated Constitutions, Weakness of the Lung*, or Consumption in the incipient or advanced stages ot the disease, has ever met with the indorsements of physicians or patients as the celebrated "Tolu, Rock and Rye." Dr. J. S. Jordan. Dear Sir: I cannot express my gratitude to yon in rescuing me from a true consumptive's grave. The best Terre Haute physicians told me I could not recover. When you first cams to me part of my right lung was gone. I had no expectation of ever leaving my bed, and even had my burying clothes made. You gave me words of cheer, and I thank God I am well egain. I have gained over thirty pounds. I wish all sufferers from consumption could know ot your treatment. Hundreds of people, and come of tbe b?st physician in the city will endorse what 1 say in this. Use this as you see proper.

of every description. They guarantee satisfaction in work and prices.

An Enviable Reputation.

It is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of the well known chemists. Joseph Burnett A Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a place beyond that occupied by any other similar manufactured goods in this country.

Their Coooaine for the hair, and a superior Cologne water, have become famous for their excellence.

In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence of their superiority than by referring onr readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distributed gratuitously by the trade.

All respectable dealers sell Burnett's select goods, aod all lovers of choice things will do well to bay them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now in the market.
