No Smallpox.
TERRE HAUTE, Jan., 24,1882.
I was surprised this morning to learn of the report that the Bmallpox was at my residence, and again this afternoon to receive a visit from health officer, Dr. Hyde, with a red flag. Three of my children have been quite Bick from vaccination, and the older one is still very ill, but Dr. Hyde and the attending physician, Dr. J. B. Crapo, will both testify that there is no foundation for the alarm,

Editor of the Express. In last Sunday's Express, in speaking of the Bale of my interest in the house of Foster Brothers, you add: "It is said Mr. Foster has newspaper aspirations." This is incorrect. I am a merchant I was bred a merchant, and I expect to remain a merchant, and should any one again intimate to you that I have newspaper aspirations, "shoot him on the spot," and oblige, A Z- FOSTER.
Small Fox Talk.
The air is full of small pox talk, but as yet but one case has appeared, and it is reported as progressing favorably. Facts, in a case like this, do a great deal toward dissipating these wild rumor?, which, if they remain uncontradicted, and the real state of affairs withheld, are accepted as the truth. The Express will publish the real state ef affairs, as far as it can learn.
The announcemnt in the Express of the appearance of a case of small pox in this city had the effect of having in tbe neighborhood ot five or six hundred people vaccinated Sunday. The doctor's offices wer« thronged at different times during th» day with persona who had put off vaccination until the disease had actually put in an appearance.

to build op our free institutions and promote the welfare and happiness of oar people. They all acknowledge that intemperance is & great and growing evil,
but they object to a ay steps being taken to impede its progrew or check ita ravages upon society. They ssy, we are in favor of temperance, but make no suggestions as to how the people may rid themselves of tbe evils o: infempfcrance. These papers, that are circulated FS cdacators among the people, ought to have a remedy fcr every ill of society. The opinion is pretty generally entertained bj politicians that the temperance cause, and especially prohibition, exceedingly nnpopular with tbe people, and that if it ia espoused by the dominant political party it will uh in its defeat I thick (hat from this fact alone arises the newspaper opposition to this amendment. But tbe opinion that they entertain, that temperance or prohibition is unpopular with the ma«£cs of the people, I tlrink is erroneous. The feeling amongst the honest thinking men of our State is -thu, that there is now nc great national question at issue that requires any attention. Slavery having been abolished and its Etain and polluting inflcnce washed away by the blood of three hundred thousand soldiers, and the great national question that convulsed the minds of the people for more than half a century having been satisfactorily settled, and after sectional feeling and sectional strife has banished, and the'sweet song of the birds of peace is again heard in our land, and we are standing as one nation and one people united and' inseparable, with grander national prospects than we have ever had before, it is an excellent time to turn our attention to our little home or State government and to repair it in su:}h a way that it will meet the wants and demands of tbe people.
The curse of intemperance hangs like a blighting mildew over our society and is a disgrace to the civilisation of the age. There are now in our State about fifteen thousand drunkard.* ten per cent, of this number will die this year and leave their widows and children in a wretched, starving condition. Besides this it produces twenty per cent, cf our idiots, forty per cent, of all insane and distracted persons, ceventy-five per cent, of all criminals, ninety per cent, of our paupers, and ninety-five per cent, of all tramps and disconsolate persona. It corruptB and contaminates the public morals, influences legislation and controls courts. It fills our jails and penitentiaries and furnishes victims for the scaflold. This being true it is the greatest evil that curses the people of this State, and should claim the undivided attention of all lovers of law and order. But what is to be done. The newspapers answer, nothing: men have always drunk to excess and always will. There is so much money invested in the business of the distillation of liquors, and so much gain in telling them, and such an inexorable demand for them, and such ability to pay for them by respectable, independent freemen, that nothing can be done." If this is true, then our boasted form of government is a failure. But it is not true. Society has the power to protect itself and prevent the commission of crime. The -prohibitory law of 1855 in this state was, as a rule, a grand success. It prohibited drunkenness and protected wives and children from abuse by drunken husbands and fathers. Tbe number of criminals and paupers were greatly diminished. The people demand its re-enactment in the 'way of a constitutional amendment, and ask tbe newspapers to aesist them in this their effort of reform.

To Oue of Terre Jlaute's Leadlm, laMtsbmeiits. The wholesale grocery establishment of Dilworth Brothers, of Pittsburg, Pa., is one of the oldest, largest and most prosperous houses of the kind ih western Pennsylvania. Having recently determined to enlarge their facilities to meet tbe growing demands of trade, they have leased a building cf adequate capacity, acd learning of the superior business equipments of H. Hulman'e mammoth establishment, they sent, expressly, a member of the firm to this ciiy-to personally inspect tbe plan-i and appointoienta of Mr. Hulman's model establishment.
Lawrence Dilworth, the member thus commissioned, arrived yesterday, and was courteously afforded every facility in aid of his mission. He expressed himeelf greatly pleased with the completeness and system observed in all the departments, and it is not improbable that the same general plan will be adopted by the firm he represents.
Mr. Dilworth is s. nephew of Dt. Joseph Bichardson, of this city, from whom the above facts are obtained.
Gust Molktt, ticketed from Antwerp, Belgium, to Sand Creek, Prrke countr, by E. L. Girdnt-r, arrived in New York Monday, and ivill reach his destination today. From Antwerp to New York he came by the steamer Waesland, of the Bed Star line.

The Electric Llghtr
In their recent inspection tour the joint committee from the* Council and the Electric Light Company visited Aurora and Chicago. The former city is lighted by seven lights. Three are located on school buildings, three on towers, and the'last is in the central portion of the city, on top of the court house. The total power of the seven lights is equal to 32,000 candle light. Field, Leiter & Co's store, in Chicago, was visited. The lights in thia building alone have the brilliancy of 64,000 candles.
Mr. J. W. Dean, general agent of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York, was in our city Monday, and prepared proofs of the death of the late J. H. O'Boyle, whose life was insured in that company for $5,000, with dividend additions to the policy, which has increased the value several thousand dollars. On Friday last, the 20th inst, proofs were made of the death of Mr. B. L. Thompson, who held insurance in the same company for $20,000. The promptness on the part of this company and its agent?, in fixing up proofs of loss, and the paying off death claims, without waiting the 60th or 90th days, as is the rule of other companies, is especially commendable. This is the company, which adopted the new departure ki life insurance two years ago, and made all its policies incontestable after they have been issued three years, let death come from any cause whatever. Policies of this kind, and issued by such a company as the Equitable, certainly have a much greater value than those issued by any other company. Mr. Dean will be in our city several days in the interests of his company, and is stopping at the Terre Haute House.

An Enviable Reputation, y« It is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of tbe well known chemists. Joseph Burnett A Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a place beyond that occupied by any other similar manufactured goods in t^p country.
Their Cocoaine for the hair, and a superior Cologne water, have become famous for their excellence.
In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for oooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence ol their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distributed gratuitouuy by the trade.
All respectable dealers sell Burnett's select goods, and all loven of choice things will do well to buy them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now in the market.
