The Dally Item.

A burglar tried to get into the residence of Simon Hirschler, on south Fifth street, Saturday night. The women folks were in the house alone, about half-past nine o'cleck, when a man came to the door and asked to stay all night. He was of course reiused, and a short time after the noise of a saw working was-heard, and the la dies screamed, and brought a neighbor to the rescue, driving the burglar away. In the morning it was discovered that he had removed two slats from a window shutter, with the intention oi breaking in.

Edifor of the arwea4.f| Please allow me space in the columns of yonr paper to ask the editor of the Terre Haute Evening Gazatte for the proof aa allegation which appeaffed & last Saturday'e Issue.

Ia epeakijg of the us pleasantness ber tsveen the white and colored soldiers at Fort Hayes, Kansas, the editor says "Owing to a carelessness of their equipment?, clothing, rations, etc., the cost of maintaining a negro regiment baa been just ebf-at double the cost of maintaining a */hite one. The experiment of ueiog blacks aa soldiers has been tried since 1866, and while they are by no means cowards, and fight well, they do not make good soldiers in other respects."

As an ex-soldier we are not quite prepared to take the bare statement of a Democratic editor that the negro soldiery is inferior to the white one, all things being equal. As to the equipments and clothing, if a man draws more than hit allowance it is charged to him and deducted from his wage**, and we fail to see where the cost to Uncle Sam comes in. Will the editor please explain what he means by experiment of using blacks as soldiers since 1866? Has not the negro soldier been an important factor in the Federal army from its very incipiency? The very first blood shed for Ameri oan independence flowed from negro veins, The impartial historian has given us a place by the side of our white comrades in arms, and with vivid recollections of the hardship of war,-and a determination to defend a down-trodden r»ce, we can not allow this bold charge again.it the matfbojd of the negro soldier to pass by unnoticed. We are pleaaad to note the admission that ^ire are by no means cowards and fight well. The Democratiq press in general, and the Southern rebels in particular, have learned that by a large majority. ,.~4-

MY PARTNER.

A~ moderate attendance, but'larger ian

has been u3ual this month, was called out last night by this sensational and interesting play. Though the third representation here of "My Partner," it was as fully appreciated as before, and was received with much enthusiasm. It is certainly much the best of Bartley Campbell's playp by its freshness and the force of its situations. The pathetic and humorous are happily blended throughout anjl each act works up to a mo«t effective clote, emphaeized by the careful grouping in the striking tableau. The company, the same as before with few exceptions, ia uniformly acceptable and was able to invest the.varioils characters with life-like interest. The leading role of Joe Saunders,'happily conceived, is admirably presented by Louis Aldrich who represent*? with pcrfectiou tho character of the* typical miner that we know eo well in 'he Bret Harte literature, the rough, uneducated hero, brave ae a lion, tender as a womab and honorabze as a Bayard:

Mr. Aldrich's fire and intensity may be even a little too much for this part and would suit a greater and more vivid creation, which he well can fill.

Pawloe is, well, Be is Pai-aloe the inimitable, more Chinese than a Mongolian, enlivening tho play by his pigeon English, and comic by-play.

George D. Chaplin as Major Henry Britt was very excellent and looked the character of" a well-known style of politician an thoroughly as he carried it out. The Ned Singleton of W. L. Dennis, which is mainly useful as a foil to theleading character, was easily and gracefully given. J. W. Hague's Josiah Scraggs was a characteristic cunning villain. Miss Dora Goldthwaite as Mary Brandon is most pleasing in appearance and action, and Mhs Fuller as the siBter Grace made her part very natural and in teresting.

All of the support was above the aver age and contributed to the euccess of a play that will bear frequent repetition, and with aa good a star and company will always command the same hearty applause as on last evening.

ALYIN JOSLIN.

The Ottawa (Ont.) Free Press epeak^is follows of the Alvin Joalin troupe, which appears at our Opera House to-nighl: "If ever any company had reason to be satisfied with its reception in- Ottawa the Alvin Joslin troupe is the party. The Grand Opera House, where they appeared on Saturday night, was paoked. Standing room only, both in gallery, balcony and reserved seats, was the rule from an early hour in the evening. The performance fully deserved the patronage it re ceived, an,d "Uncle Alvin" kept his promise to afford his audience 180 laughs in 180 minutes most faithfully, Mr. Davis has certainly spa/ed no pains to .k' serve success, and the cordial reception he seems to meet everywhere is certainly Worked for. He has a good play, both plot, incident and dialogue, and his caste has been carefully select d, and all.up to the demands of the most fsstidious in their work. The make-up of 'Uncle Alvin' was perfection, and in his humor there was nothing of exaggeration. He was excellently supported throughout the entire piece, and from the opening to tho-close of the performance the company had the entire sympathy of their lalge audience, as was evinced by the frequent outbursts of applause."

EVANGELINE. ." 7

Bice's "Evangaline" combination will appear at the Opera House next Saturday afternoon and evening.

The unqualified Buccees that has everywhere attended of E E. Rice's burlesque and extravaganza combination under the management of Ernest Stanley, sufficiently attest the superiority of the artists engaged ''-and of the entertainments given. The appreciation of his determined efforts to refine and elevate the .standard of this most attractive form of amusement has been such as to encourage and strengthen him in bis purpose to make American Opera Bouffe an unexceptionable source ot innoceut diversion, while at the same time preserving all the brilliance of mise en scene, and all the charms of spirited mtteio, interspersed with rollicking fun, peculiar to this modern essence of burleeque.

STARES

Sunday evening occurred the mal'riage of W. H. Wolf and Miss Maude Sparks, Rev. C. R. Henderson officiating. The ceremony was attended by the relatives only. They received many valuable and useful presents. After spending a pleasant evening the parties left at 11 p. pi. for Chicago accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Martin of that city. Both of the contracting parties have a large circle of friends in this community with whom the Express joins in wishing all the joys that married life can possibly bestow.

A son of Frank Prox found a crow bar and a couple of chisels back of Wright and Kaufman's yesterday morning from which it is inferred that burglars had' made an unsucceeful attempt to get in that store. A suspicions character was arrested in that vicinity Sunday tnight by officers Cain and Joe Beagin, bat he was released yesterday morning, there not being sufficient evidence against him.

Mr. J. W. Dean, general agent of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York, was in our city esterday, and prepared roefs of the death of the- late J. H. O'Boyle, whose life wasinsured in that company for $5,000, with dividend additions to the policy, which hes increased the value several thousand dollars. On Friday, last, the 20th inst, proofs Were made Of the death of Mr. B. L.. Thompson, who.held insurance in the same company for $20,000. The promptness on the part pf this company and its agents, in fixing up proofs of loss, and the paying off death claims, without waiting the. 60th or 90th daysj ag is the rule of other companies, is especially commendable. This is the company, which adopted the hew departure in life insurance two years ago, and made all its policies incontestable after they have been issued three years, let death come from any cause whatever. Policies of this kind, and issued by such a company as the Equitable, certainly have a much greater value than those issued by any other company. Mr. Dean will be in our city several days in the interests of his company, and is stopping at the Terre Haute House.

Mb. AprRED Spser.—Dear Sir: The visit which I made last year to your Vineyards, wine-presses and vaults at Passaic, N. J., satisfies me thoroughly that the wines produced by you are pure and undulterated, and the very best that can be offered to the public for medicinal uses.

Acting upon my favorable impression at the time, I have since recommended the Port Wine more particularly in my practice, and am satisfied with marked benefit to my patients.

There can be no better proof to the doubting mind, as to the wine being made of the finest Oporto gtape, than a visit to the acres of land covered with the vine bearing the luxuriant fruit. Wishing you snccess in your praiseworthy enterprise, I remain respectfully yours,

An Enviable Reputation.

It Is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of the well known chemists. Joseph Burnett & Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a place beyond that occupied by any other similar manufactured goods in this country.

Their Cocoaine for the hair, and a su]erior Cologne water, have become famous lor their excellence.

In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence of their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distributed gratuitously by the trade.

All respectable dealers sell Burnett's select goods, and all lovers of choice things will do well to buy them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now ia the market.
