A few weeks ago the mat friends of Captain Wallace McCune were inexpressibly shocked by hearing it charged that he W8P guilty of gross offense* fgainst morality and law, as well as good taste a.nd the standard of honor obsierved~even by men of pleasure. The complainant, Mrs. Sarah Turner (fomeily Sprouse), is somewhat notorious in this vicinity, bnt the charge was made so specifically and backed by the .evidence of other "women" to such an extent that for a time it 'made the case look bad. It finally came to trial on Tuesday last, before E quire James Gbs- and iorg befoie the examination was concluded every person in Ue co'irt room waa sitifinl that tbe woman had cot scintilla of fact on which to base her claim, nrd that taken ts a whole it wa? a cruel end criminal attack on an innocent man. But a few mon'ihs before tbe date of the alleged offense Capt. McCune had loet his wife, to whom be wa^ devotedly attached and he is now rearing a family of half orphaned girls. When, with this, we consider the notoriety of the prosecn trix, we ne^d not wonder that there was excitement amounting almost to panic, and that the court room was crowded acd very largely by tbe best citizens of the county.
The case for the state was conducted bv John Courtney, Esq., of Crawfordsville, who acquitted himself of his unpleasant task far better than might have been expected—assisted also by Captain F. M. Howard, James Johnson, E:q., for the defense, had an unusually trying task, aa he acted as frieud and comrade even more than attorney for Captain McCune nevertheless his legal acumen did not fail him, and slowly, mercilessly he drew the truth from unwilling witnesses by rigid cross examination. The occasion was mere than dramatic interest, and tbe searching inquiry uncovered a depth of infsmy we shuuld cever have believed possible in Rockville. When it clc-sed there was sot a shred of evidence left to th* prosecution untainted, and it seemed that enough bad been proved to convict a! least two witnesaes of peijury. But the mother, sitting there with tbe child in her arms, maintained an unmoved fiont which was astonishing. The ppeech of Johnston for the defense was a forensic masterpiece, and his peroration upon the grief a man must suffer in such a case, however innocent, and all the more wheu innocent, drew tear* from tbe most hardened court-goers. 'Squire Glass, in a few formal words, apparently si riving to keep calm, discharged the defendant, whose friends at once crowded forward to congratulate him. Mr. Caurtney also re ceived many compliments for the gentlemanly way in which he did his evidently unpleasant duty. Thus closed Rockville's worst case. But it i3 hinted that another case.L to pome, in which tome of the witnesses nill appear under criminal indictment.

The Sommeis Brothers, of Youngstown, Ohio, will shortly erect a rolling mill at that place. It was their intention to locate it at Niles, Ohio, but the residents of that burg failed to keep their coniract with them, so what is their loss in Youngstown's gain.
Will Swartz, of the nail mill was, on last Saturday evening, voted a goldheaded cane by the Central Temperance Club of this city, for being the most poplar young man associated with the temperance work. He is justly proud of his elegant staff, which will doubtless prove a valuable companion to lean upon in old age.

It had been announced the present csrd rates based on 2.5 cents per pound for merchant bar would be increased to meet the advance recently made in Philadelphia to 2.8 cents per pound. There was also a full discussipn ol the condition of the iron market after which the present oard rates were reaffirmed by a unanimous vote.

Correspondence of Use Kxpre®. Marshall, 111., Janmry 20,1882. Last night one William Benedict, a notorious outlaw, of this city, went to the St. James hotel about 6 o'clock, engaged a room and went to bed. It was only a short time nntil a certain notorious prostitute of these parL«, by the name of Vale, was seen by some of the servants of the house slipping to tbe room occupied by tbe fellow Benedict. The landlord was ^informed of the state of things and sent for the city marshal to come and arrest the parties,
When he got there a demand was made of the parties on the inside to open tbe door. This they refused to do. when the landlord ended the parley by kicking in the door. Oa going in, the woman was found in bed and Benedict in the act of putting on his clothes. The officer marched the delectable cr.uple to the police magistrate's tffice, where the woman was given a trial and fined three dollars and costs. Benedict w«* granted a con'inn ance his casta, there being three separate charges, until to-day at te& o'clcck. W. R. Griffith, County Judge ol Clark ccuntv, went on the bond of Benedict for his appearance, and it is said the boys "chipped in" their contributions and paid tbe fine of tbe woman. Benedict has Just been fined ten dollars and costs on one charge, that of fornication, and will be tried for "associating," at two o'clock. Benedict is a married man, and there is talk of prosecuting him for adul tery.

Townley Bros., have on exhibition in their show window, two very fine grates one low down and one half low down, with Minton tiles and brass fenders. Tbev are the first of the kind in tbe city and attract much attention.
An Enviable Reputation. E It is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of tbe well known chemists. Joseph Burnett & Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attraictivensss a place beyond that occupied by any other similar manufactured goods- in this country.
Their Cocoaine for the hair, and a suirior Cologne water, have become famous their excellence. In addition to these preparations are Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence of their superiority than by referring our readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These an published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which is distributed gratuitously by the trade.
All respectable dealen sell Burnett's select goods, and all lovers of choice things will do well to buy them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now in the market. t»
