Hattie Milligan, the young lady whose sudden death was noted yesterday, was removed to the residence of her aunt, Mrs. Harriet Hebb, on Mulberry street After the body had been placfd in the cofiiu, signs of life were thought to be present, and every effort was made to resuscitate here. The bod 7 did not poesesa that degree of frigidity generally noticed with the dead, the hands and face were warm, and the latter possessed (o a certain extent its natural color. The relatives worked with the body all day, but were unable to develop any more Bigns of life. The remains will not be interred, however, until it is positively assured that death has ensued.

A Worthy Object.

B. J. Donaway, the man injured by the falling walls after the Keyes Sykes fire, is entirely paralyzed from the waiht down, and unable to move himself. He is in destitute circumstances, his only means of support being his faithful wife. Bis friends are disposing of ticketB in a raffle for a gold "Watch belonging to him, and they should meet with great success. Persons who have the fnll use of their physical powers should see him, and they would not hesitate an instant in contributing such a small Bum to relieve distress.

theSessoB-A Deligblcd Andlesee, Oakland (I1U Here Id, Jan. 14th. The (vent of the ee£3cu occurred at the City Hall, Thursday tvening on the nc caaion. of tfce firet appears»ie of the Maurice Hughitt concert company, of Terre Haute, Ind. The bouse was well filled, and the audience manifested the highest appreciation throughout the entertninmem. Too much praise cannot be bes£#w*d upon the company. They are »rti:-ts in the highest acceptation of the term, and we bespeak a brilliant future for them.

Mies Helen Jeffers, the beautiful soprano singer, created a profond impression upon our people. Her voice is sweet and strong, and she ha* it ander perfect control. The highest cotes are reached with the utmost clearness and without the least ^exertion. Her volume is full and mellow, and its aweetnesm enraptures 6very listener. Miss Jeffers won golden opinions from our best musical critics, and it is but ju«t to say that they were richly deserved. Some day, in the near future, we hope to see her lake her stand beside our greatest living artist, where she unquestionably belongs.

Miss Alice Fischer sustained her high reputation as an elocutionist. In every part she assumed she gave the utmost satisfaction, "Tom's Little Star" waB ren dered in a masterly manner, and was warmly applauded, "Curfew Must Not King To night" was given in the readers' inimitable style, and at once enlisted for her the appreciation of the audienpe.

MIBS Fischer is a powerful delineator of character. She has a diversity of talent that is remarkable. She is the mistress of both mirth and pathos, and carries her hearers with ease into their alternate realms. She is destined to attain the highest standing in her chosen calling

We now pass to Miss Dollie Miilikin, the accomplished pianist. In justice to Mi6s Miilikin we must say the instrument upon which she performed was not in good tune, several keys being perfectly silent. But in spite of adverse circumstances, her solos weie executed with marvelous skill and the most artistic perfection. Miss Miilikin is a Decatur lady, and we are sure that our neighboring city is proud of her. As a performer up on the piano it is not necessary for ua to p_8s judgment on her merit. She is pronounced a grand success by the ablest critics in the State, and we can only add our testimony to the universal popular opinion. That she delighted her audience in Oakland is moat emphatically true, and when she visits hew again she may depend on a flattering reception.

These ladieB will go to Europe in the spring to develop themselves thoroughly in their respective calling?.

We have only to say that they are abundantly endowed with talent, and with proper training they will speedily reach the summit of4heir ambition. Ths Herald takes pride in wishing them every succes?, and also in extending to them a standing invitation to come again.

Neighborhood Notes.

Hoosier State. There is no cleverer man connected with the C. & E. I. railroad than H. L. Bushnel), of Terre Haute. He is a gentleman in every particular.

John H. Beadle, of the Rjckville Tribune, is going to old Ireland next summer to write up the troubles of that country for the Cincinnati Gazette.

The teachers of our school have arranged with Prof. Eli. F. Brown, teacher of the Natural Sciences in the Indiana State Normal echool, to deliver a lecture at the M. E. church on Friday evening, January 20, on "The Wonders of Little Things."

Hon. John E. Lamb, of Terre Haute, will probably be the Democratic nominee for Congress, in this district, at the coming election. John will work as hard to get there as any man thp Democracy can nominate. "He is young, an eloquent speaker, and full of energy. J.

Paris Gezette. John Scott will leave Berleau Son, and go to Terre Haute.

Miss Alice Dicken^m is taking music lessons in Terre Haule. Mine. Nellie Young, of T»rre Haute, was in the city Sunday, the guest of. Mr. acd Mrs. Dyas.

Msj. J. W. Vance went down to Marshall and Greenup, Tuesday, to muster out the companies there, belonging to the Seventeenth battalion.

Everything denotes that we are to have the new railroad to the northeast. A contract has been closed for the building of that part of the line between NobleBville and Lebanon and the work will be pushed forward as fast as the weather will permit. We are reliably informed that it is the ideation to complete the work to this city by th6 firet of September. The work of securing the right-of-way from here to Montezuma will probably be commenced early in the spring.

Vaccine Virus.

The greatest portion of vaccine virus used in this city comes from Fox Lake and Fond dn Lac,Wisconsin. The firms engaged in the preparation of it lease lieifers fiftm tbe farmers in the surrounding country, inoculate them with the virus, and when the pustules fill they remove the matter from those on the udder, and after diluting it prepare it for shipment as follows: Small pieces of ivory or some similar substance about the size and shape of steel pens, flattened out and somewhat longer, are dipped in the virus, allowed to dry and again dipDed and dried. These are then done up singly in seme substance to exclude the light, and covered with oiled silk, and they are ready for Bhipment. They must be kept excluded from the light and air and above the freezing point until used, when they are taken from their coverings, moistened and scraped and the virus placed npon the abraded flesh of the arm of the person to be vaccinated, and allowed to dry. There is no danger of contracting any disease as there might be if the matter used were taken from the arm of some patient, as nsed to be the practice. Many thousands of these tablets are daily shipped by the vaccine farms named, and it reachcs here fresh. Matter telegraphed for one morning will reach here on the evening train from Chicago, on the following day,

Small Pox.

As yet Terre Haute has bwn fortunate to escape from that dread scourge, small pox, but notwithstanding the precautions taken by tbe board of health, it will most likely make its jppeararce in our midat before tho season is over. With our north and south and east and west railways, it will be almost miraculoas if we do not. Too much stress cannot be laid upon the necessity of vaccination. On Wedneklay, eeven infected tramps went into Chicago, and the health authorities there claim that they mnst have communicated the disease to at least twenty persons. Unless every one in that city is vaccinated, Health Commissioner De Wolf predicts that the coming spring will usher in a raging epidemic of the horrible disease.

The class in the history of philosophy will meet in the study of Bev. Thomas Parry, in the Presbyterian church, corner of Seventh and Mulberry streets, at 7:30 this (Friday) evening. Any one desiring to study this subject may become a member of the clam free of charge.

Prof. Brennecke leaves for Indianapolis, this morning, to commence his private clew, which will meet at the residence of Mrs. H. E. Allen, on Delaware Btreet. ^He will return to-morrow afternoon.

In the case of Clark county vs. the St. Louis, Vandalia & Terre Haule Railroad Company, the Supreme Ceuit baa decided that tbe company is responsible for the whole amount claimed by tbe county. Peoria Transcript. The old brick house between Dr. Johnson's bath house and the Main street horse railway track was once the lowly home of 'the gifted Emma Abbott. Man is like a musical instrument—he is worthless unlees in tune. At limes the system needs the strengthening effects of a ton it the blood needs reinforcement, and the vital energies a stimulant. Iron in various forms has beeu in use for many years, and no better combination of it with other vitalizers than Dr. Barter's Iron Tontc, is known in this country. It is a safe and reliable remedy in dyspepsia, general debility, want of vitality, and the usual disordeis attendant upon a prostrated s/stem.—[Burlington, (Iowa,) Gazette.

The audience'which greeted the second appearance in this city of the Charles L. Davis (Alvin Joaiin) Combination, on Saturday evening, was one of the largest 6ver assembled in the Opera House. Before the commencement of the performance every available position in the hall W8s occupied, and the scores who Came late were unable to obtain admittance. The play is of an extremely ludicrous character, and judging from the continued bazz of merriment, waR fully appreciated by those present. Mr. Davis, aa tbe Yankee farmer abroad, was, of course thecentr# of attraction, his droll sayings and general "make-up" being of a most amneing character. The other members of the company sustained their parts well. Some of the scenery was entirely new to most Londoners—that of pier 29, East River, with tbe mocn and stars above reflecting in the water, and Ne* York City illuminated, in the distance, being very liftlike. A Cough, Cold or Sore Throat Bhould be stopped. Neglect frequently results in an incurable lung disease or consumption. Brown's Bronchial Troches do not disorder the stomach like cough syrups and balsams, but act directly on the inflamed parts, allaying irritation, give relief in asthma, bronchitis, coughs, catarrh, and the throat troubles which singers and public speakers are subject to. For thirty years Brown's Bronchial Troches have been recommended by physicians, and always give perfect satisfaction. Having been tested by wide and constant use for nearly an entire generation, they hive attained well-merited rank among the few staple remedies of the age. Sold at 26 cents a bottle every where.

An Enviable Reputation. It is with pleasure we allude to the manufactures of the well known chemists. Joseph Burnett & Co., of Boston. They have won by their merits and attractiveness a-pi ace beyond that occupied by anjr other similar manufactured goodn in this country.

Their Cocoaine for the hair, and a superior Cologne water, have become fatuous for their excellence.

In addition to these preparations ar« Burnett's Standard Flavoring Extracts for cooking purposes, and we can not show better evidence of their superiority than by referring onr readers to the testimonials of all the leading popular hotels in the country. These are published in Burnett's Floral Hand-Book, an attractive and valuable little pamphlet which iii distributed gratuitously by the trade.

All respectable dealers sell Burnett's select goods, and all loTers of choice thine* will do well to buy them in preference to the cheap and impure articles now in the market.
