At Silver Creek, in Schuylkill county, Penn., a young man constitutionally undecided in his character, was for a time charmed into constancy by the attractions of a worthy young lady of that jlace, and paid his addresses accordingy, in a manner not to be misunderstood. As his one known deficiency, an uncertain acquaintance with his own mind, seemed overcome in this instance, the family of the lady favored the suit,.and she herself did not refuse when he did plead forcdefinite engagement. -But, alas!" "When the weak-kneed knight found himself actually sure of his queen "of love and beauty, there came upon' him such a fit of craven doubting that "he turned oold and moody in', fcrf hour,1indj witKdut allowing himself time to reflect whether he was acting wisely or the contrary, suggested to the lady that they had better retract their mutual pledge. In reply she displayed neither anger nor despair, but with a playful tap upon his head from one of the crotchet needles, told him that he was excited, and that life realized not what he was saying, and, might better apply some pooling lotion'to his enfevered brain.

".Be ca'm, Mosesj be ca'm!" she counseled,' "aria don't g6 throwing away the happiness of your whole life because you've got the dispepsia. Just see how ca'm I am."

He saw that she was calm indeed, and the.conviction taught him that he must argue the question with her more practically te prodiice "the desired effect. "They were members of different churches, and knowing her inflexible fidelity to her own denomination^ he now advised her that his lierocleah sense of religious duty would not allowliim to wed any person of another pastorate. If she would give up her church and join his they might be happy yet.. Otherwise they had better part.Ofc-i. /:i /i_ "Let us do nothing hastily, Moses but be perfectly calm. I can't give up my church,: you know but we might compromise by you giving up yours .and bringing a certificate' to mine.'" Only let us be calm, and it'll alLcome out right at last." •.

Finding her conversational .powers too much for him, the doubting swain retreated fr6m her presence much dis-potil-aged, but came again on the following day to -resume tne argument. On this occasion a preceeding night of sleepless anxiety hftd rendered, his: weak mind even more turgid than it had been before and when in reply to his repeated futile protests, she strove to show him why his calm exchange of his church fOrherswas the one thing left for him to do calmly, exhausted nature asserted her rights, and he fell into a profound doze in his chair. Losing by degrees the steady hum of her calm voice, he dreamed that lie was in a brilliant tropical forest, striving to drive away some, hug? insect that strovfe' to sting him. Despite 4iis liveliest efforts the insect came nearer and nearer to his face, and at last, with a savage dart, alighted upon his "neck and inflicted a Bharp bite. His whole throat seemed to swell in an instant with the iitjectod tenoiny.and a sensation of quickly repeated stings followed the jab-like motions of the other arm and hand just behind his right ear. "Here, I say, Maria, what are you about?" lie exclaimed in great auitatiou, catching the gleam of a pen-knife in the air, and Ptruggling frantically to escape from her firm grasp.

Wrenching himself from her hold with the frenzv of despair, the amazed yoting taan, wljo had never folt so much cut up in his life before, ruefully rubbed his various little experimental wounds on his nock, arid asked quavctingly what it'all meant.

Always attend-to checking yourself. If you feel like swearing at the baggage master, check yourself. If ydti haven't a trunk full of clean clotbes to check, you at least should be adequate to a check shirt.

When you vacate your scat for a-mom'ent, leave a plug hat in the' seat. So'me o'ne' will come along and sit down, on it, tliercby preventing your hat frpm be™g stoleni

Have just the change 'ready, for tlie conductor. Any conductor who properly understands his'duty to* himself.and: family had rather have the .' change than a ticket It has been decided by law, that a conductor is not obliged to make change, although that is often all he can. make.

Passengers can not,lay over for. a'nbther train Without making arrangements with the conductor. If a man has been' on the "train" for a week or so, no, conductor should allow him to lay over for another on any account.

Ladies without escort in traveling should be very particular with those with whom they are unacquainted.

If you have been of service to a lady, you are not entitled to -after recognition •jdless she is after it.

Keep your head and. arms inside the car windows, if you would keep your head and "carry arms."

Never talk loudly while the train is in motion. It hurts your lungs and disconcerts the engineer.

Nevfer talk on politics. It encouragessome "ninislii" to take a vote of tlie passengers.

No gentleman will occii py niore than' one seat at a time, unless he be twins. A gentleman should not spit tobacco juice in the cars where there are ladies. Ele can let drive out the car window while the train is at a station, if the platform is not crowded.

Always show your ticket whenever the conductor asks for it. If you get out of humor about it, don't show it.

Never smoke in a car where there are ladies. Get the .conductor to turn the ladies out before lighting your cigars.

Never use profane language in the car. Go out on the platform. Profanity is never thrown away on a brakemari.

If. you cannot sleep yourself,, do not disturb the "sleepers." Look out for pick-pockets. Pickpockets are never in the car, you know, so you have to look out for them.

Provide yourself with sleeping berths before starting. No careful man will start on a journey without a good supply of sleeping berths. [N. B.—Those put up in flat bottles are the best, as they are easily carried in the pocket.]

Always be at the railroad station in -good time for the train. Eetter be' an Tiour' foo early than a minute too late, •unlefes you are on your way to be hung.

RELIGIOUS VIEW OF GEN. GRANT. A correspondent of the Christian Intelligencer writes from Long Branch: "I am in time to see a plain buggy, dra\Vn by a quiet-looking horse, go Dy~ amid the throng of flashy turnouts and. elegant family chariots that fill the road. The driver is alone in the carriage, a thick-set man whose face shows 'the touch# of wind and weather. He has brown hair and beard, deep eyes,a square, ftot a high, forehead, and a closely-clip-ped mustache is pressed well upon the jearded lower lip, by the firm lines of themouth. Hats are lifted here and there as he passes, and he raises his in re sponse, but with n'o change in the habitual gravity of his countenance. There is literally nothing in his vehicle, dress .or manner to distinguish him from the hundreds of his fellow-citizens flocking along the thoroughfare. "I meet him almost daily in our rides and walks—always, let me say it, with a return of the emotions that thrilled me on an April morning seven vears agone, when driven from my bed by thoughts born of the previous day's excitement, I beheld through my window, streaming brightly and proudly from the churchtower opposite, the star spangled banner, and fell to my knees in a burst of glad recollection that the war was over and our flag unsullied. "I wish it were proper to speak here of tho glimpses of the warrior statesman's home with which we had been favored this summer, the proofs we have had that in private life he is as decor us and exemplary as he has showed himself wise and brave in battle, I am no more a politician than is my 'monarchist' friend Dr. but I know whereof I speak when I assert that these things are true."
