ADMIRERS of "Oassian" will be delighted with "The Cat," by R. JABRIOHT, printed in this issue.

THE editor of the Terre Haute "Journal" modestly claims to know and repre* sent the sentiments of the Knox county Democracy much better than the editor of their own local organ.

THE "Journal'.' denies that it desires the approval ofthfi Sullivan ''Democrat," and claims that Mr. BBIGGS' paper doea, tfot represent the .opinions.of more than one per cent, of the Democracy of Sollivan.

THE local Bourbon organ argued {hat the success of Mr. VOOBUEES in his last Congressional canvass was due to the fact that ANDYHUMPHREYS presided oyer the convention by which lie was nominated. There's profound ratiocination for you! I Tag,HON'.ZACB£'CHANDIER- is frank: ing old newspapers over the country What does the tipsy old coon imagine he can accomplish by lumbering the p^aila With Kew York weekly papers? Such an abuse of the Franking Nuisance calls for severe censure. Stop it, *cn. «•.».-»- .-y I: 'IF IT BE true, as our Bourbon neighv bor insists, that ninety-nine per cent, of the Sullivan Democracy, and ninety per cent, of the Knox Democracy,. are hostile to the views of their respective home papers, we should suppose tjhat Messrs. KreK and Baioos would beglh to taste the sweets of martyrdom, or, hi the eloquent language of LEMMON, would1 learn how it fe$ls to be "baptised in "the blood of an unconquerable devotion to principle."

DDKR ALEXIS positively stated to Glovernor Geary that he wonld attend the jentennial ef American Independence,' at Philadelphia, on the 4th of July, 1876.Ecthangt. jr jiyrisivo

That centennial is along way off, and if crowns and titles in Europe continue to tumble with the same ratio of increase that has marked the last few years, there may be no Dukes in 1876. True, the Czar seems to be firmly seated, but the torpedoes of revolution may explode even

under his solid throne.

A FRENCH COMMISSION, modeled on the general plan of our own complaisant committees to investigate the conduct of the war in the dark days of the rebellion, has commenced the work of discovering, if possible, who was responsible for the surrender at Sedan. Without the voluminous evidence which will in the natural course of events be produced before this commission, the Philadelphia "Inquirer" ventures to suggest that MOLTKE, WILLI ix of Prussia, and BISMARCK are the persons mainly to blame for the disaster which overtook the arms of the Second Empire at Sedan. And to'the exile of Chiselhurst, the Orleans Princes, and President THIERS, the "Inquirer" thinks it certainly can make very little difference now who is or was most to blame for the final and complete subjugation of the France upraised on a glittering but most unsubstantial peQestal of military ., glory by the Third NXPOLEON.

The Doty of the State Convention. The Republican State Convention, soon to meet, will have illy performed its.duty if it fails to_declare in unmistakable terms the determination of the Republican party to s'and by the noble system of general education which is now just beginning to bear fruit in our State to defend it against the assaults of its enemies and to oppose any proposition looking to a di-

113

vision of the school fund, or theintrodac "V* tion of sectarian instruction in any of our public schools. The aggressive and dear- .**« lv defined policy of the RomatT Catholic

Church, and the ready compliance of the .i Democratic party with its demands when, ever (as in Lafiayette) it is.called npon, renders «uch a declaration most appropriate. We urge the naatter npon the attention of our Republican friends throughout the State.—LrtfagetU-hunted.

THE editor of "Harper'^ Weekly" puts a great deal in a few words, as follows: "A party which, while defending and extending human slavery, called itself Democratic, and while actively in one part of the country, and passively in the ether, trying^to overthrow the govern*^ "'.ment, called itself Convservative. may also, when foiled in the attempt to destroy the Constitution, solemnly call itself

d^Constitutional.

The motley host called

the Democratic-partv is quite as constitutional as it is democratic, and as conservative as it is constitutional." *.

A RECENT correspondent of the Detroit ost" corrects an erroneous impression which, has prevailed to some degree in regard to the extent of the Michigan forrest fires. These were not near so ex tensive in their destruction as was at first supposed. Many portions of the State, including the whole peninsula noi^h! of Saginaw and Grand River, entirely e^„ caped injury. In order to secure stand* ing timber it is best- to bnrn over the ground annually. This will not injpre pine and the more valuable woods. Hem* lock, however, burns very easily. It is well known that where pine stands with hard wood upon high^ground fire running through it seldom doe3 much damage, and burning over the ground every year prevents the collection of ttndergroWth| which, when once- fired, destroys in its .4 conflagration the whole valuable forrest.

From the From trbo-aijiv city last nig fir' irom Goaport^jnd., we learn the particulars of a most distressing: case of snicide that occurred near that town last Saturday night. "Once, only once." "How is that?" "You wish to profit by my experience? Well, I don't ktiojr that I mind telling you the story. It may serve to amuse yon, if nothing mot-e."

It occurred a number of years ago, where, is.of no Iwnseqiiehcet I had tak en the early express train, and being somewhat tired and altogether sleepy^ had stretched myself upon a seat for a comfortable nap as circumstances would permit. I slept soundly, tor I could in thae day8 sleep well almost anywhere, and did not waken until the conductor came for my ticket. The essential piece of pasteboard could not be found.: I was

fremembered

nitive I had purchased a ticket fndeed, distinctly having shown it to the baggage clerk at the time of checking my. trunk.

The conductor grew impatient, passed to the other end of the car, and returned to me. I had made the discovery that my pocket-book had been picked, and in proof of my story showed him by baggage check.

It was useless. If you have traveled much you are aware that a virtuous con ductor takes no man's word in fact, all men have designs upon^he. company's dividends except himself. It. was perfectly natnral, therefore, that the faithful "teward in question should say: "The check is all right, but hovdo I know that it bdotign'td you?" 1 #111 take the money for yortr tor'e-or sfop thfclrain and put you off, just as you choose."

What could I do? Protestations amounted to nothing, and my fellow.passengers wtth the mual tendency of humanity to trample upon a fallen "tnab, showed clearly by their looks and expressions they thought mem sneaking rogne, who would steal a passage if he could. They raid money, why should I not pay mine? Few men would ever see heaven if judgment was rendered by a jury—except themselves.

My search for the lest ticket had brought to light about dollar and eighty cents. This I told the conductor was every cent I had about me. He said it wa« about fifty cents short of the usual (are to Lauderdale city, but that ha would pats me throogh for it rather than stop the train. From Lauderdale, a city of.
