SPECIAL NOTICES
1 lie Trite Grounds of Confidence Whcncc comcs that firm reliance, that absolute, undoubting faith in the efficacy of Hostetter'g Stomach Bitters as a remedy for indigestion, bilious disorders, intermittent and remittent feiers, which notoriously prevails in all parts of the United States? This confidence has been growing for twenty years, and it is still extending. It is not the result of credulity it has not been engendered by any human device, but is the spontaneous and natural consequence of experience.— What people see daily going on under their own eyes they cannot question. When fami lies in unhealthy districts, that resort to this wholesome vegetable tonic as a preventive escape periodical fevers, and their immediate neighbors, who ncgloct that precaution are prostrated by the disease, how is it possible that the phenomenon should be without its lesson'/ In like manner whe.n it is seen that obstinate cases of dyspepsia, of liver complaint, of constipation, of nervous weakness, and of general debility, yield to the operations of the famous remedy, how can even incredulity itself withhold its endorsement? Eye-witnesses of the salutary effects ofthe bitters, aro to be found in every civilized settlement on this continent. The thousands upon thousands who owe their restoration to health and strength, or their preservation from sickness to its extraordinary medieinal properties, are enthusiastic in its praise. The multitudes who recommend it in a neighborly way tn their friends and acquaintances, as well as those who make public their estimate of its virtues, aro always ready to state their reasons for the faith that is in them. They have all either felt or witnessed its beneficent operations.
A New Enjoyment! Ladies, have yo« used MOARAV & LA!-.-JIA.N'U FLORIU* WATRRI It is really the be3t pcr.ume to be found. It is equally suited for the handkerchief, the toilet and the bath. In France and England, in South and Central America, and in India and China, Ac., fcc., it is the only perfume in extensive use so agreeable and refreshing is its delightful fragrance, that when once used it is invariably referred to all others. may5-deodly

.&-TEE CAUSE A2JE CCJKK OF CONSUMPTION.—The primary cause of Cousnmp. fion is derangement of the digestive organs. This Oerangcment produces deflciant nutrition and asjimilation. By assimilation, I mean that process by which the nutriment of the food is converted into blood, and thenco Into tho solids of tho body. Persons with digestion thus impaired, having the slightest predisposition to pulmonary disease, or if they take cold, will bo very liable to have Consumption of tho Lungs in some of its forms and I hold that it will be impossible to enre any ease of Consumption without first restoring a good digestion and healthy assimilation. The very first filing to be done is to clcanse tho stomach and bowels from all diseased rnnens and slime which aro clogging these organ so that they cannst perform their functions, and then roupe up and restore the liver to a healthy action. For this purpose, the surest and best remedy is Schcnck's Mandrake Tills. These Pills clean tho stomach and bowels of all tho dead and morbid Elimc that is causing disease qnd decay in the whole system. They will clear out the liver of all diseased bile that has accumulated there, and arouse it up to a new and healthy action, by which natural and healthy bilu is secreted.
The stomach, bowels, and liver are thus cleansed by the use of Schenck's Mandrake Pills but there remains in the stomach an excess of acid, tho organ is torpid and tho appetite poor. In tho bowels, the lacteals aro weak, ar.d requiring strength and support. It is in a condition likoiJiis that Schenck's Seaweed Tonic proves to bo tho most valuable remedy ever discovered. It is alkaline, and its use will neutralize all excess of acid, making tho stomach sweet and frqsji it will give permanent tone to this important organ, and create a good, hearty appetite, and prepare the system for the first process ef a good digestion, and ultimately make good, healthy, living blood. A fter this preparatory treatment, what remains to enro most cases of Consumption is tho free and persevering uso of Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup. The Pulmonic Syrup nourishes the system, purifies the blood, and is readily absorbed into the circulatian, and thcncc distributed to the diseased lungs. There it ripens all morbid matters, whether In tho form of absccsses or tubercles, and then assists Nature to expel all the c?iscnsed matter in tho form of free expectoration, wl'ien once it ripens. It is then, by tho great healing and purifying properties of Schcnck's Pulmonic Syrup, that all ulcers and cavities aro healed up sound, and my patient is cured.
Tho essential thing to be done i:i curing Conite and a good and cav-
Tno essential ining io oe none 111 curing v, sumption is to get np a good nppelite and a gi digestion, so that the body will grow in flesh get. strong. Ifa person has diseased lungs, a _ty or abscess tliVre, the cavity cannot Ileal, the matter cannbt ripen, so lony as the system is below par. What 18 necessarv to cure is anew order or things, a good appetite, a good nutrition, the body to grow in flesh and get fat: then Nature is helped. tho cavities will heal, the matte' will ripen and be thrown off in largo quantities and tho person regain health and strength. Thi. is the true anil only plan to euro Consumption and if a person is very bad, if the lungs ire aoi entirely destroyed, or even if one lung is entirely one, if there is enoncrh vitality lett in tho othe\ to heal up. there is hope.
I have Seen many persons enred, with only one sound lung, live and enjoy life to a good old age This is what Schenck's Medicines will do to euro Consumption. They will clean out the stomach, sweeten and strengthen it, get up a good digestion, and givo Nature the assistance she needs to clear the system of all the disease that it in the mngs, whatcver.llie form may be.
It is important that, while using Schenck's Medicines, care should be exercised not to take old keep in-doors in cool and damp weather avoid night-air, and take out-dour exercise only in a genial and warm sunshine.
I wish it distinctly understood that when I rc:cmmend a patient to be careful ill regard to taking cold while using my medicines, 1 do so for a Special reason. A man who lias but partially recovered from tho cffcccj of a bad cold is far more liable to a relapse than one who has been entirely cured, and it is precisely the same in regard to Consumption. So long as the lungs are not perfectly healed, just so long is there imminent danger of a full return of the disease. Hence it is [hat I so strenuously caution pulmonary patients against exposing themselves to r.n atmosphere that is not genial and pleasant. Confirmed Con-
icmselvi'9 to r.n atmosphere
sumptives' lungs aro amass of sores, which the least change of a'mospherc will inflame. The grand secret of my success villi my mcdicines consists in my ability to subdue inflammation instead of provoking it, as ninny cf the (acuity da An inflamed lung' cannot with safety to the par tient be exposed tho bitinsr blasts of winter oi the chilling xviniis of spring or autumn. It should bo carcfully shielded from a'll irritating influences. The utnio-t caution should he observed in this particular, as without it a cure under almost any circumstances is an impossibility.
The person should be kept rn a wholesome and nutritions diet, and all tho midicincs continued until tho body has restored io it the natural quantity of flesh and strength.
I was myself cured l»y this treatment of the worst kind of Consnmptidi, and have lived to get fat and heariy these r..sny years, with one lung mostly gone. I have cured thousands since, and very many liavo been cured by this treatment whom I have never seen.
About the 1st of Octobcr, I expect to take possession of my new building at the northeast corner of Sixth and Arch Streets, where I shall be pleased to give advice to all who may require it.
Full directions accompany all my remedies, so fiiat a person in any part of the world can be read ••J'cured by a strict observance of the sama.

The labor of getting
The enthusiastic support so readily accorded to their enterprise, wherever it has been introduced, has convinced the publishers of
THE ALD1NE
of the soundness of
their theory that the American public would recognize and heartily support any sincere effort to eleva the tone and standard of illustrated publications. That so many weakly wicked sheeti exist and thrive is not evidence that there is no market for anything better—indeed the success of
THE ALD1NE
fiom the start is direct proof of the contrary. With a population so vast, and ot such varied taste, a publisher can choose bis patrons, and his paper is rather indicative of his own than of tne taste ef the country. As a guarantee of the excellence of this department, the publishers would beg to announce during the coming year, specimens from the following eminent American artists:
Wm. T- Richards, Granville Perkins. fm. Hart, F. 0. C. Darley, Wm-Beard. Victor Nehlig, George Smiley, ,, Wm. H. Wilcox. Aug. Will. V--"' James H. Beard, James Smiley, R. E. Piquet, rFrank Beard, Paul Dixon,
J. Hows.
The pictures are being reproduced without regard to expense by the very best engravers in the country, and will bear tLo severest.
critical comparison with the best foreign work, it being the determination of the publishers that THE ALD1NE shall be a successful vindication of American taste in competition with any existing publication in the world.
LITERARYDEPAR1MENT. Where so much attention is paid to illustration and get up of the work, too muchdependence on appearances may very naturflly be feared. To anticipate such misgivings, it is only necessary to stat'. that, the editorial management of THE ALDINE has been intrusted to MB. RICHARD STODDARD, who has received assurance of assistance from a host of the most popular writers and poets ot the country.
THE VOLUME FOR
1872
will contain nearly 300 pages, and about
260
fine engravings. Commencing with the number for January .every third number will contain a beautiful tinted^ picture on plate paper, inserted as a frontispiece.

A ehromo to every Subscriber' was a very popular feature last year, and will be repeated with the present volume. The publishers have purchased and reproduced, at great expense, the beautiful oil
