SPECIAL NOTICES.
Old Things Have Passed Away. This is at least true of the old method of treating the long abused and mack abused hn man body. It is no longer considered wise to put a patient to tlie torture in order to cure him of a disease in which pain is already undermining the energies of his system True science ranges itself on the side of nature, and endeavors to assist her in her fight against disease. This is the province of Ho» tetter's Stomach Bitters, the most approved tonic ever advertised in this conntry. It may be recommended as a fall medicine, par ex cell en ce for it is in the fall that biliousness dyspepsia and malarious fevers are especially prevalent. The frame, exhausted by the beats of summer, is relaxed and feeble at its close, and requires, we may say demands at tificial assistance. Afford it that assistance in occasional doses of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, and the evils referred to may bees caped. Throughout the far west, and on the steaming alluvial of the southern rivers, all the varieties of periodical fever are probably rife to-day. Had a course of Hostetter's Bitters been commcnced by the sufferers month ago, t. e„ before the unhealthy season set in, seven-eighths of them would in all probability be in their usual health at the present time. So much for not keeping in the house, and using daily, the best safeguard against epidemic and endemic fevers.
As flocks of imposters and imitators are trying to follow in the wake of the great American remedy, therefore be sure that the article you buy is genuine and verified by the proper trade marks. The trae article can only be obtained in bottles. Beware of the spurious bitters sold by the ga'.lon or in keg.

and availed themselves of his wonderfully efficacious medicines, tliey would not have fallen. Dr. Mihenck has in Ills own case proved that wherever sufficient vitality remains, that vltiil.ty, by his medicines and his directions for their use, is quickened into healthful vigor.
In this statement there is nothing presumptuous. To the fuith of the invaltd Is made no representation that is not a thousand times substantiated by living and visible works, Th* theory of the cure by Dr. gchenek's medicines is u» simple its it Is uiifftUinc# Its philosophy requires no argument. With this condition iiio bronchial tubes sympathise "with the stoiuuch. Tiiev respond to the morbific action of the liver. Here then comes the oulminaMnff result, and the setting in, with all its distressiutf symptoms of
CONSUMPTION.
The Mandrake Pills are composed of one of Nature's noblest #lfts—the Podopbtllum Peltatum. They possess all tho blood-searching, alterative properties of calomel, but, unlike calomel, they "LEAVE NO STING BEftlND."
The work of cure is now beginning. The vitiated and mucous deposits In the bowels and in the alimentary eanal are ejected. The liver, liko clock, is wound up. It arouses from Its torptalty. The ftoniucli acts responsively, and the patient begins to feel that he Is getting, at last,
A SUPPLY OF GOOD DLOOD. The Sea-weed Tonic, in conjunction wltli tlie Pills, permeates and assimilates with the food. ChyllHcation is now progressing without its previous tHi-tures. Digestion becomes painless.and the cure is seen to be at hand. There Is ho moro flatulence, no exacerbation of the stomach. An appetite sets In. ^fow comes the greatest Blood Purifier evor yet given by an Indulgent father to suffering man. Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup comes in to perfonn its functions and to hasten and complete the cure. It enters at once upon its work. Nature enn not be oheated. It collects and ripens the Impaired and diseased portions of the lungs. In the form of gatherings, it prepares them for expectoration, and lol in a very short time the malady Is vanquished, the rotten throne that it occupfod is renovated and made new, and the patient. In all the dignity of regained vigor, steps forth to enjoy the munhood or womanhood that was jP
GIVEN CP AS LOST.f
S"he second thing Is, the patients must stay in a warm room until they get wells It Is almost Impossible to prevent takint cold when the lungs 'are dlseasoa, but It must be prevented or a cure can not be effected. Fresh air and riding out, especially in this section of the country, in the toll and winter season, ore all wrong. Physicians who recommend that course lose their patients. if their lungs are badly diseased and yet because they are the house they must nut sit down quiet they must walk about the room as much and us fast as the strength will bear, to set up a good circulation of blood. The patients must keep in good spirits—bo determined to get well. This has a great deal to do with the appetite. and is the m-eut point to gain.
To despair or cure after such evidence of its possibility In the worst cases, and m«ral certainty In all others, is sinful. Dr. bchenck persotuu statement to the Faculty of his own cure was in these modest words
Many years a#o I was In the last Btajres of consumption confined to my bed, and at ono time my physicians thought that 1 could not live
a week then, like a drowning man catching at btalned the preparations io public, and they made a perfect cure of me. It seemed to me that I
straws, 1 heard of Vd obtalne which 1 now otter to the pub could fed them penetrate my.whole system. They soon ripentd tho matter in my lungs, and 1 would spit up more than a pint of offensive yellow matter every morning f«r along time.
As soon as that began to subside, my cough, fever, pains, and night sweats alt began to leave me. and my appetite became so great that It was with difficulty But 1 could keep from eating too much. I soon gained my strength, and have grown In flesh ever since. "I was welshed shortly after my recovery." added the Doctor, then looking like a mere skeleton my weight was only ninety-seven pounds my present weight is two hundred and twenty-five (225) pounds, and for years 1 have enJoyed uninterrupted health."
Dr. Sohenok has discontinued his professional visits to New-York and Boston. He or bis son. Dr. J. H. 8ehenck. Jr.. still continue to ace patients at their oBce. No. 15 North Sixth Street. Philadelphia, every Saturday from

Those who wish a thorough examination with the Kesplroraeter will be charge* 55. The Kcspirometer declares tho exact condition «f the lungs, and patients ayi readily learn whether they are curable or nose.,
The directions for taking the medicines arp adapted to the Intelligence even of a child. Follow these directions, and kind Nature will do the rest, excepting that In some cases the Mandrake Pills are to be taken in Increased doses the three medicines need no other accompaniment* than the ample Instructions that accompany them: First create appetite. Of returning health, hunger Is the most welcome symptom. When it oomes, as It will eome, let the despalratonoebeergeodchcer. Good blood at oeca ows, the cough loosens, the night sweat is abated. symptoms are gone forever. Dr. Schenck's medicines are constantly kept ji tens of thousands of families. As a laxative or puncatlve, the Mandrake PIUs area standard preparation I while th*' Pulmonic Syrup, as a euro of eoughs and colds, may be regarded as a prephylactarfe -against consumption in any of Its forms.

SON CO.: Gentlemen—As you have commanufftted to the medical nrofession the recipe of the "Home Bittters, it cannot, therefore, be considered as a secret or patent medicine, no patent having been taken for it. We have examined the formula for making the "Home Bitters," and unhesitatingly say the combination is one of rare excellence, all artioles used in its. composition are the of the class to whioh they belong, being illy Tonic, Stimulant, Stomachic, Carminative and slightly Laxative. The mode of preparing them is strictly in accordance with the rules of pharmacy. Having used them, seen its effect in our private practice, we take
