CONCUSSION of the air, it is asserted will drive off insects that prey upon fruit trees. A gentleman living on the line of the Danville road, noticed that the blowing of the whistle of the locomotives passing through his orchard, had driven off the "curculio." To satisfy himself of the correctness of this theory, he placed two pounds of powder in the hollow of a live oak stump in the immediate vicinity of 2 cherry and plum trees which the "curculio" threatened to destroy entirely. The powder was fired off on a calm night, and S all the insects, it is stated, disappeared at once, and the trees and vines subsequently exhibited a marvelous growth.

AN awful warning to scolding wives comes from Milwaukee. A woman in that city was "jawing" her children, the neighbors, a hired girl, and everybody in general, when her husband entered and interposed a mild word. She opened her mouth for an angry reply, but a 3pasm contracted her cheek, her lower jaw fell, and she could neither speak nor shut her mouth, but remained in that condition, her tongue hung out. and her eyes nearly started out of their sockets. She had dislocated her jaw bone in her violent effort to make a slinging reply to her husband. A surgeon was called, who reduced the dislocation, bound up her head, and prescribed a gruel diet. The old man is now enjoying the quietest time lie has had for forty years.^ SI*"
THIS is the season of storms, and from all parts of the country come reports of buildings destroyed by lighting, not un* frequently attended by loss of life. People who have lightning conductors should see to their connection with the earth. A lightning conductor having the earth extremity partially insulated, soonbecomes charged if a storm passes over it, and then a lateral discharge takes place hence the accidents which have frequently taken place in buildings supposed to be adequately protected. Sand and gravel, brick-work and stone,'are bad conductors of electricity, and if the rod has such a base, and the surrounding earth be likewise dry, it is practically insulated. The difficulty of getting what telegraphic operators call good earth is one that should weigh with those putting up lightning conductors. They should not rest satisfied that all is secure unless they can reach a running stream of water, or else sink a considerable surface of copper plate till permanently damp earth is reached.
THE OIL WELL.—The pump at the oil well was worked very slowly yesterday, drawing oil at the rate of about eighteen barrels a day. A huge tank .has been erected and preparations are made to gather in the valuable fluid on the arrival of the new machinery, when it is believed the quantity of oil per day will be quadrupled. The oil was tested yesterday, by an oilometer, with the following result: Temperature 50° Fahrenheit, specific gravity 32° The instrument was applied to the crude oil, just as it came from the well, without standing, and in, the absence of heat. The specific gravity of ordinary lubricating oil is say 28

Association.
TIMJ Meeting Last Night.
APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES.
The second meeting of citizens last evening at the Terre Haute House, to ar range for the* coming of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, was quite largely attended, and a very proper spirit manifested. Prof. Cox was present and stated that he was anxious that the city should derive all the benefit to accrue from the visit, and in arranging tbe programme should look to the interests of Terre Haute. The fact of holding a meSting of the Association here would give our city a world-wide celebrity, as it would be telegraphed throughout this country and Europe. He stated that about 250 scientific gonlletnen would come over on the excursion and that invitations had been extended to. A number of leading iron men and capitalists. Gen. Humphreys would come to look at our resources with a view to propose improvement of the Wabash. Indianapolis, he said, had not yet taken any action towards entertaining the scientist*, and he was bappy to see the generous and hospitable action of our people.
Prof. Cox was assured that the Association Would be properly cared for during the stay in this city.
A
The programe cannot be definitely de~ termined on, but will probably be as follows: The Association will arrive here on Friday evening, the 18th inst, at five o'clock. After being properly cared for at the hotels, at eight o'clock there will be a public reception at the.Opera House, with short addresses by the Scientific gentlemen. Col. R. W. Thompson was selected to make the reception address. On Saturday morning the Association will hold a regular session at the Opera House, and after dinner carriages will be waiting for a drive about the city. The Association will probably return to Indianapolis between four and six o'clock On Saturday evening.
To carry out the programme the following committees were selected GENERAL RECEPTION COMMITTEE. R. W. Thompson, Geo. V. Ellis,

COMMITTEE ON OPERA HOUSE.—'W. B. Warren, C. E. Hosford, Owen Tuller^
THE Indianapolis "Journal" condemns the Tony Pastor performance, and concludes with the paragraph below, which we commend to the management of our Opera House:
Minstrel performances, if properly conducted. as was the case with Manning's and one or two others witb which o«r city has been favored this season, should be liberally patronized, but we must enter protest, the name of the public, against polluting our only first class "Temple of Amusement" with entertainments of like character with that given last night. In the long run it will be money in the purse of the lessees to close the doors absolutely aeainst the repr»« sentativea of the New York slums, though we are satisfied that they, as well as others, were deceived as to the style of this entertainment.
PARKE CIRCUIT COURT is now in session. Thus far the attendance has been nnusually large. As yet no case of special interest has come up for trial. In addition to Judge Patterson, Prosecutor Briggs and our resident attorneys, we notice present, Col. John Baird, Addison Daggv, J. M. Allen, and J. B. Cheadle.—Rock vffle Republican.
Ladies
who were formerly residents of
this city, and who have lately removed to Indianapolis have since sent to Hers & Arnold for their Corsets, stating that they could not suit themselves near as well in the Capital of this State in regard to style, quality and prices.

HuMAfi $ATER.—There is no bettef placc than the post office to study human nature in all ils phases. There is the individual who gets a letter about once in six months, but who always struggles to be first at the window the one who regards his solitary letter as a natural cariosity, turning it over and over, viewing it from an up-hill and down-hill standpoint, a if in astonishment that he should get one at all the man from the country who inquires for all the folks at his place the sprucc ctark who gets a dozen letters for his employer, and looks as wise as if they were all intended for himself the indignant specimen who wonders why the expected^ letter hasn't come, and who holds an earnest colloquy with the clerk as to the probable cause of its detention ?he bashful young man, with faint traces of down on his chin, who expects a le'ter from his sweetheart, and who retires in confusion the big man who treads on his neighbor's corns the seedy customer who gets a bill from a long suffering creditor, and tries to make one think it's a draft and the booby who waits on the sidewalk to see who goes in and who comes out, are the persons we see daily at the postoffice. Reader, if you will watch the postoffice any day about mail time, you will see the individuals thus briefly described. The clerks think highly of the young man from the country who inquires for the whole neighborhood, and only second to him is the indignant individual who fails to get the letter that he "knows was mailed, day before yesterday,"
