HOT weather for dancing. OH! for a good soaking rain. SEE announcement, of Tony Pastor'S coming.
OF course you are going to the concert
THE excursion to Indianapolis on Sunday promises to be a big thing. BAGDAD is not to be sneered at. It is one of the most rapidly growing suburbs of the city.
THE Terre Haute Horticultural Society holds its monthly meeting to-day at the residence of C. W. Barbour, over the river.
THE concert at Dowling Hall to-mor-row evening will be far abov the average of home entertainment and should .be liberally patronized.
POOR panting people, as well as portly perspiring persons may find some consolation in the fact that yesterday failed in being as hot as the day before by two degrees.
FIRE.—Near Cloverland, on Monday afternoon, a fire caused from burning logs, destroyed about 250 bushels of oats and 300 bushels of wheat in stack, the property of Messrs. Carpenter and McBride.
IKE BROWN, on yesterday, started out on the sixth volume of the Sullivan ''Union." Starling five years ago, as an experiment, he says he has succeeded beyond his most sanguine expectations, and the Unien" has a9 good prospect for living years to come as any paper in the Wabash Valley.
TEACHERS. At the session of the School Board last evening the corps of teacher? for the coming year was completed by the selection of the following: Flora Button, Lou Seamans, Emma Grover, Kate Begiein and SaraliCunningham. Two of these graduated at the close of the last term of the High School.
THE GUARDS' BALL.—The boys had a delightful time at Dowling Hall last night, the only drawback being the in* tense heat. The hall was handsomely decorated with flags, crossed muskets, &c., and Toute's full band furnished ex« cellent music. The attendance was quite large, and the receipts much larger, many tickets being sold to persons who did not come to the hall.
•^PERSONAL.—Uriah Jefjfem left town yesterday on a trip combining business with pleasure. He goes first to the eastern part of New York State, then to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and will finally bring up in New York city, where he will contract for an immense stock of goo$. He will swing the circle in twelve days.
Owen Tuller and wife arrived home from the Eastern cities yesterday morning.
W. H. Paige has another pupil in his Conservatory. It is developing a splendid voice, but will not appear in the concert to-morrow night.
Gen. Lew. Wallace was in the city yesterday.
THE NARROWGITA'GE.—At the meeting of the stockholders of the Cincinnati and Terre Haute narrow guage double track railroad, held at Greensburg, on Tuesday, the following directors were elected: N. M. McDowell, of Canton, Ohio John D. Scully, Cashier of First National Bank, Pittsburg A. B. Quackenbush, Pittsburg General Foley, Greensburg James Small, Bloomington L. A. Burnett, "Terre Haute, and Wm. Blakely, Wellsville, i' .•ess Ohio.
The Directors elected as officers: N. M. McDowell, President John D. Scully, Treasurer A. B. Quackenbush, Secretary.
Hon. Morton Hunter, who is here looking after the interests of the road, informs us that in thirty days after favorable action is taken b? this city, work will be commenced, and that in four months time the road will be completed, at least as far as Middleburg, twenty-three miles from this city.

"One More Unfortunate 1" "••a .1.1 •"1 Market Master Edward John
Commits Suicide! v..-.
r: t'.
Yesterday morning, about nine o'clock, the dead body of Edward John, Market Master of this city, was found in the river, at the foot of the "Indian rifle*! half a mile above the upper railroad bridge, by Chauncy Twaddle and son, who were going up the xirer. Where the body was found the water is not more than three feet deep. It was lying across a log ten iches under the surface, the head down the stream—face down ward8—the head and -feet under the watered bafck exposed. The body could not have floated into this position
On Tuesday, evening, he filed his monthly statement with the" City Clerk, showing an indebtedness to the city of $172 20. Stating that he wonld hand the money to the City Treasurer the next morning, he left the Council Cham* ber at about .eight o'clock. Between eight and nine o'clock a policeman saw him on Third street, on the east side.ef the grave yard. The policeman noticed: that he acted strangely, but supposed that, he was intoxicated. Everjr_ few steps he would turn, and lookback, uif under apprehension that some one was watching his movementa.
Yesterday morning at seven o'clock Zimri Dunbar, in the employ of the Cemetery Sexton, found John's hat witll a memorandum book, some papers and $4 in money lying on the grave of Mrs. John, hid first wife. In this memorandum book, on Tuesday.evening the deceaflid was observed to have a sum of money^pparent]y sufficient to pay his indebtedness to the city—$172 20. He borrowed eight dollars of some one to make up the amount. The fact that this money is missing, leads to the belief that foul play may have occurred, or that being robbed or having lost the money, he -got out of the trouble by putting an end "to his existence. The city owed hits, $123 30, for services Ss Market Master, and the account was allowed on £uesty evening.
The deceased was about 47 years of age, a German "bybirth, a tailor by trade, and of somewhat intemperate habits. He was a man pf strict integrity but very careless in* /jonductinif business. His wife died a little over a year ago, and he was married to another three months after. He -leaves a family of five children, one by his last wife, without any property or means Tor their maintenance. iZ
Coroner Gerstmeyeir held an inquest yesterday, and the jury after examining the body as it was first found, and heaping the above detailed facts) returned a verdict that the deceased had committed suicide by drowning. The bo^y was interred yesterday evening at six- o'clock by the side of his first wife.

DEATH
OF
NICHOLAS SXITH.—We
mentioned yesterday the sad news of the death, at Vincennes, after an illness of only three days, of Nicholas Smith, father of G. F. and C. C. Smith, of this city. In the Vincennes "Gazette", of yesterday, we find this Bketoh of the deceased:
Mr. Smith came to Vincennes fiftyfour years ago, and commenced- trade in hardware and tinware, on the corner of Main and Second streets, on the ground now occupied by. ..John Lander's store, and soon became the leading merchant in that branch of commerce in Southern Indiana and Illinois. His ..wholesale hardware trade extended to Lafayette and Logansport. north, and forty or fifty miles in other directions. He also engaged in boating down" the Wabash and Mississippi rivers, some seasons sending oat forty boats to New Orleans. His business operations were upon a larger scale than those of any other man along the Wabash, and he was generally known, along the Ohio and Mississippi, from Pittsburg and St. Louis to New Orleans. His bnsinesB relations and intercourse have been governed by a strict code of morals and integrity his Word was good for thousands, without a note, any where along the river. He was universally respected and regarded as an honored relict of ."ye olden time,"—before 4h»adveat~of railroads and telegraph* !,«•
Mr. Smith's life, for We past sixty years, has been one.of incessant activity hardly a day has been lost. His appearance upon the street has been as regular as the BUnshine. His mind has eVer ran in the same channel, never deviating or taming to speculations in politics, religion, or natural changes. His accumulated wealth has been liberally expended in building substantial business houses on Main street.

The same correspondent adds: "There have been residing in this town for over a year a Scotch Baroness and a Bussian Duchess—that is, a brace of European female aristocracy. They were traveling in the East a year ago, looking for spiritual mediums. They have found two here." —..'i— A CASTLES

As soon as an article purporting to be of utility has been tested, and its merits endorsed by public opinion, unprincipled parties endeavor replenish Uieir depleted purses by counterfeiting and substituting a spurious ftr a genuine artiele. Some time since, mercury, in the disgutse of pills, powders, Ac,, was given for all diseases of thestomaeh and liver, while quinine was freely administered for the chills. At length Hostetter's Stomach Bitters made its advent, and an entire new system of healing was inaugurated. The beneficial effects of this valuable preparation were at once acknowledged, and mineral poisona suffered to sink into that ob sc'urity,:to which an enlightened age has consigned them. There have been many spurious bitters palmed upon the community, which, after trial, have been found perfectly worthless, while Hostetter's has proved a blessing to thousands, who owe to.it their restoration to health.
Forinany oears we have watceed the steady progress of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters in public estimation, and itsbenifioent effects •a, a cure for ill complaints arising from the stomaeh of a morbid .nature, and wo are free to Say that it can he relied upon as a certain relief and remedy. Its proprietors have made the above preparation, after years careful study and a'# now reaping the reward claimed by this valuable, specific, and whioh they so riohly merit, it is the only preparation of the kind that is reliable in all cases, and it therefore demands the attention of the afflicted.
