JUDGE LONG takes the "new departure," but Clerk Hollinger doesn't.
COL. THOMPSON will deliver ihe address at the Early Grove this afternoon.
WE hear complaints in regard to ihe entrances to the CourtJ House square being closed.
LET all business be suspended this afternoon for the few hours, asked by the Decoration Committee.
THE price of strawberries went down to fifteen cents a quart yesterday. The fruit lost much of its greenback flavor.
MAYOR THOMAS issues a proclamation requesting that all business houses be closed this afternoou from two to five o'clock.
4
HOME AOAIH.—Will S. Ryce, of the Buckeye, and S. R. Baker, of the P. O. Lobby, returned from the East yesterday morning.
COUNCILMAN REESE since he got into office has commenced the erection of a handsome cottage on the corner of Eighth and Walnut streets.
MARY COE writes us a note to the effect that her house is not a "bagnio." We hope that the truth of the same she can clearly maintain.
THE German Catholics enjoyed a very quiet and pleasant picnic at the Early Grove yesterday, until the rain broke into the programme.
BRINO FLOWERS.—We are requested to ask all who will contribute flowers for decoration purposes to send the same to the Opera House this morning.
CANED.—City Engineer Strout received a present of a valuable cane yesterday but his exceeding modesty would not per mit him to tell where it came from.
BAD SPELL.—A saloon, the farthest out on Main street, is christened—so the sign reads—"The Last Schanec,"denoting "the last chance" to get a drink of lager bier.
THE Indianapolis Journal mentions that the Emmit Guards cleared $700 on their excursion to this city, and adds that "they also cleared Terre Haute, whatever that may mean.
COL. JESSE I. ALEXANDER was stricken with paralysis last evening. We were unable to learn his condition at the time of going to press, but it was reported as critical.
MESSRS. WARREN, HOBERO & Co. have arranged their show window with great taste, in commemoration of decora tion day, and it will doubtless be admired by such citizens as may observe it to-day
THE Singer Sewing Machine office has been removed to No. 76 Main street, op posite Ryce's Carpet Hall, where a commodious room has been fitted up in fine style especially for this business.
COMPETITION in the ice trade is getting interesting, and quite beneficial to consumers. The Terre Haute Ice Company announce a reduction from one dollar to twenty-five cents a hundred pounds.
THE storm yesterday evening was very severe to the Bouth of the city. At Greenwood school house, while the Principal, Mr. Doring, was in the act of lowering a window in the north vestibule, the sash and pane were blown in upon him, causing a very bad fracture of the ankle, and other contusions.
THE HONEY BEE.r..
BY T. HDLHA«.
R-ad Wore the Terre Haute Hortieultaral Society,
MR. PRESIDENT: A colony of bees consists of three different members—the queen, drones or male bee, and the workers. The queen lays all the eggs, from 100 to 3,000 a day, according to the size of the colony, the stores on hand apdin the field, temperature, &c. She rests generally from October till January. There is but one queen in a colony. 8he lives about five years, but becomes almost worthless after her third year, laying mostly drone eggs, and shoald be replaced by a young queen after her two or three years. Of drones there about 800 to a colony. Black drones lire from May till August, Italians till October. They are killed by the workers. The latter are undeveloped feminines, about .fifty thousand to a colony. The queen' when fire days old leaves the hive and makes of with a drone in high air only once for her life time, in two days after she commences laying, never leaves the hive any more except to lead off a swarm.
When not fertilized she also lays. eggs, but drone eggs only. A worker also can lav drone eggs. This not unfrequently takes place, but such colony however strong will perish, unless provided with a queen. The bees know a fertilized queen from a virgin the instant you give her to them, and do but reluctantly accept the latter. Many such discoveries havebeen made under the introduction of the Italian bees. In two or three months after an Italian queen is introduced, the colony is wholly Italian the blackbeesare gone and three hundred yellow ones have taken their place. An Italian queen fertilized by a black drone is worth leas tonne other pure queens from, while her drone progeny is as good as from a pure queen. An egg hatches in fifty hours, is capped over on th$ seventh day. Queens hatch on the 17th, workers on the 22d, and drones on the 25th day. The young worker before flying out do the housework, cleaning and taking charge of the young ones. Italians are better workers breed faster and are more gentle. The Hybreds are crosser than the black ones, but excellent workers, To be useful in baek* it wants a wire with moveable combs next a honey machine. The latter is centrifugal apparatus, that throws the honey out of the comb, the comb is then given back to the bees. This way a col ony can make 100 ponnds a year, the .honey is nice and clear, and if it is nee essary should be headed up to keep after heating, it can be eaten with impunity by dyspeptics, or persons who are troubled: with weak stomachs. When this ma chine honey is fairly introduced, ihe pried will come down, and more honey used instead of other sweets. This would be a great benefit to the country, as yearly the United States import seventy-fire millions of dollars worth from the West India Islands of inasperjent sweets, ne* glecting to take care of what is in abundance at home.
But I am afraid I intrude on your patrons, and will conclude with the assertion that bee keeping has well kept pace with the modern improvements of the age.
STABBED.—On Sunday evening, near the corner of Fifth and Locust streets, as a party was returning from the pic nic, a drunken row occured, in which Joe Davis, a former bar tender at the Academy of Music, drew a knife, and with deadly purpose aimed it directly at the breast of Jack Kennedy. Fortunately another of the party arrested the blow, at the expense of having his fingers bad-ly-cut, and the knife took effect upon the back of Kennedy's shoulder, inflicting a severe but not dangerous wound. No arrest had been made up to last evening^
WE understand that the ladies of St.' Stephen's Church propose to give asocial entertainment, or rather fete, in the grove at the residence of Mr. George C. Duy, on Friday afternoon of this week. The de tails are not fully arranged, but we have no doubt the affair will be in every way enjoyable. Further notice will be given in to-morrow's paper.
THE Joe Emmet party played at Jack sonville last night, and find that by recent changes in the running of trains, they cannot reach this city in time to play to night, consequently the two perform' ances will be given on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The postponement, of course, will cause little or no incon venience to our people.
MAYOR'S COURT.—Yesterday morning Nick Goodman, Samuel Garvin and another boy, named Bush, were arraign ed for bathing in the river during the hours of daylight. Fines were assessed and failing to pay, they were committed to the Station House.
LEO. D. SIRRONIA, the popular Terre Haute House barber, has succeeded in getting a first class artist to assist him and is now ready togrve prompt attention to all his patrons.
