There are two or three hundred men in this-city of New York who make their living by preying in one way or another on the credulity of people in the country The best games are those which reach only the dishonest the pretence of sending counterfeit money has been very successful, and many a man has been badly bitten by it./The sufferers are con-, strained to keep quiet, as they cannot make a prosecution yithout showing that they intended to swindle somebody, and thus it happens that only now and then are the city swindlers brought to justice.

this question of a man who was engaged in a,lottery swindle in ohe of the New England States "That is the great, trouble," he replied "We can get enough names out pf the directories. ...but they, are not such as we warit! \Ve buy lists sometimes, from publi?liers of weekly newspapers, who give us the names of their subscribers, but they are not Very good, as the peoplfe who take newspapers are generally too intelligent to be swindled. We send to postmasters, but they are stupid, and give the names of the most prominent men instead of the obscure ones, which we want. Sometimes we hire men to go around through the country places and collect names, tinder various pretences, but this costs a great deal of money, as a man must stay some time in a village or country town before he can get at the names. The best lists of names at-e those that are made up by copying every name written on the walls of railway stations and the buildings that surround them, and in the country stores.- A man who writes his name in a public place is pretty sure to be an idiot, or so ^near one that he will bite at glittering bait.
