Accident

and

Narrow Escape".—

Yesterday, morning a team of horses with a dirt-scraper attached, became frightened near the corner of Main and Ninth streets. Opposite the Terre Haute House they ran against a carriage, in which was seated Mr. Ira Delano and his niece, who were jogging along unconscious of the approaching dangerThe carriage was overturned and Mr Delano was thrown to the ground with such force as to dislocate his shoulder. The horse drawing the carriage made quick dash, dragging Miss Delano in the overturned carriage, acros3 the street, where it was fdHunately caught by Mr. J, B. Lyne, else we should troba, bly iiave had a mdre serioos accident fo record. Dr. Read easily replaced '.the accident shoulder, and Mr. Delano will suffer but little inconvenience from the dislocation. Miss Delano was only slightly bruised, and is exceedingly thankful to escape so well.

She also 8WB that "the chief occupation

1 *-«»A Deiuoei'atu) From an Indianapolis letter, in yesterdayV Journal, of "this city, we extract the following agonizing howl from one of our leading city Democrat. Hfisays:

To use/ thpt ',: much worn .expression, "For ways Chat arS dark iirid tricks that are vain," the ^Legislature of Ind|ana is vety peculiar*. Ai to Stele Ageftt, the question tif said ry came 'np to-day, upon the Senate amendment tixihg the salary at 8500. The Hoiise pissed the bill by 71 to 21. This action ofthe House stamps the Democratic side as acting dishonorably and disgracefully. Now, why I say that, my understanding, and I think I am cOJrrectly informed, is. that the Democratic members of the Senate and House had a caucus, and the salary question was fixed at $3,000 without any perquisites. They faced upon their action and completely ignored what they were in honey bound to obey. I think such condilct does more to destroy the Democratic party than all the laws such meh can make. It is a long lane that has no turn, and hope to iive to see some of these honest Democrats politically dead. Now I ask, in all candor, why apply the knife to Shannon simply because he is an Irishman If they are honest in their talk about economy and reform why not apply the knife to the State Auditor's office? Here is an office, as the Sentinel admits, is worth $25,000, when in reality it is worth $50,000. Why shall Shoemaker remain untouched The law is simply a robbery for the Auditor's benefit. I for one believe it is to our interest to pay good, fair salaries so that ihen places, but I am informed that this man Shoemaker even refused to pay $300 asssessed upon him by the State Central Committee.

It is the same old story, that a worthless Democrat can get all the offices and pay he wants, but when a wheel-horse comes u£—a man who has spent his time and money for the party—he is put upon a mere pittance or in some obscure position. The Republicans were, of course, against the salary, as the Agent is a Democrat. Their reoord is bad, to say the least of it. Ten years ago they did not say a word, but allowed near $i0,000 for services ot Agent of State rendered in Washington City.

In conclusion, upon this subject I want to volunteer this Utile piera of-advice: SOme Indianapolis gentlemep have the last Stfctfe'omce they wil£ eVer hold1—afc know the 4utside pressure and sentiment is that hereafter other men will be State officers.
