The Chicago Journal declares that city to be unquestionably the .largest porkpacking city in the country. In 1868 the packing of hogs was 775,121 in 1869, 579,954 in 1870, 639,645 and for the season of 1871, to date, (the 20tUlnat 856,560 have been packed, and the packers nre still at work.

From

the Indianapolis papers we learn

that the retaking of the census in that city, which has been in progress for the last few days, is now completed, and the canvassers are engaged in making their duplicates. It is estimated that the present enumeration will add between 9ix and eight thousand inhabitants to that of last autumn, beside making large I additions to the manufacturing statistic^ of the city. In district No. 11, one thou sand and twenty-four have been added .: the former enumeration, and there i? add to be a corresponding increaaein #11 the other districts.

The probability of a hanging, at Ev» ansville, in the lease! of Bitif. SawtiSb^ who, it will be remember^, -bent this wife's brains out with a sad-iron, contemplated with pleasure by the people of that city. There has l»een no legal strangulation or neck-breaking done there for many years, and thtere is a natural repugnance to a repetition of such an entertainment. Tbe last execution witnessed in Evansville was that. of two colored men, taken from jail and murdered by a mob in the summer of 1865. After they had been beaten, shot and kicked until their corpses were coldi they were suspended upon lamp-posts for Kome hours* and it was with great diffi-r culty that the Township 'trustee secured the bodies for interment. One of the victims is generally believed to have been innocent of the horrid crime which in' cited the mob to the awful work. Among the causes which produce repugnant to the hanging of

HERB is a hint for women who are '^complaining that they can find nothing -j to do: V. One woman in Johnson county has sent & to market during the past year, 1,500 dozen eggs-r-the product of her own hens. s1 The production of eggs and poultry ih iian easy .and profitable business. The demand for these articles is in excess of the supply, and this disparity is constantly increasing.

The Democratic State organ thus fj mildly rebukes some of the county organs of that party for daring to express an ir honest opinion upon the infamous pro'^ceedings of the Senate against Mr. Bub-

,-k We have r^retted to see, during the pendency of this case, a disposition on the part of two or three Democratic paper* to impugn the integrity of Democratic

Senators and throw doubt upon their political fidelity. Let the rebuked editors now fall upon their marrow-bones and crave pardon for having been gnilty of «rpeaking the truth, or they will get a worse castigation. No time is to be lost. There is no end to the uses to the electric telegraph can be put. safety of banks from burglars is the latest of its applications, and the manner in which it is to be employed is this: The plan is to connect the banking room or safe with the police station, at which place is a clock to which the wires are attached. There is a paper dial placed inside of this clock for night use, upon which the time the night watchman visits each bank is recorded. He goes through the night from bank to bank and turns a button at each. This gives a signal at the station and is recorded If the signal is not given at the station the police send to the bsnk not signalled to see what is wi ong. Through the night the absence of signals is a cause of alarm, and the same may be said of any other

Modest Old Harvard.

From the Cin. Chroniola

It was a Harvard University Professor who humorously described Boston as the Rub of the Universe. Quite likely he sympathized a little with the" conceit he satirized. Old Harvard ^prides herself as the crowning glory- of Boston.- She has much to be proud of,: we admit, and willingly overlook her exctisable vanities But a little story has just got out—a secret carefully kept for thirteen years— that is really too good to .be lost.
