The Hasards of Winter.

The feeble and delicate dread the winter, and with good reason. The weather at this season has a depressing effect upon the vital organs and the tinimal spirits, and they have no vitality or mental animation to spar*. The aged and infirm, in whom the flame of life is waxing dim, are always unpleasantly affected by the temperature of winter, and should fortify their systems against it. The The extra vigor and resistant power which tho enfeebled system requires to enable to meet with safety tbe assaults of cold and damp, may soon be acquired by the regular use of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. The tonic effect'of this wonderful medicine is soon apparent, in an increased appetite, a more active digestion, and a brighter, happier frame of mind. Food is the fuel of the body, and if it is not properly digested the fires of life burn low. When this is the case, the disability can always be remedied within a short space of time, by taking a full dose of the Bitters twice a day. The stomach will soon begin to perferm its allotted task regularly and steadily the food, being thoroughly assimilated, will yield the amount of vital neat and nourishment which tho body requires under the external pressure of cold, and the winter ailments which are apt to assail the weak and untoned physique will be avoided.

SPECIAL NOISCES. SPECIAL NOTICE S.

Suggestions for the Season. Thousands regard the winter as a season of ^trials and the truth is, that if there is a weak point in the system, wister ii pretty sure to find it oat. Constitutional tendencies to disease are generally aggravated by damp and cold. (Rheumatism sometimes lies

all the summer and fall, to pounce

upon its victims in the jeason of cold.) As a means of fortifying the body against all the diseases which prevail most extensively in winter, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters cannot be too u-gently recommendod. There would be fewer eases of the pulmonary complaint* tending to consumption, if all feeble systems were invigorated during the season withal Tljn

was profession-

ally in Mew York, Boston, Baltimore, and l'hiladeliia every week, where 1 saw and examined on an nverai?e livo hundred patients nweek. A prnctico nocxtunflve, embracing every possiblo phase of lung disease, lias enabled me to understand the disease fully and hence my caution In regard to taking cold. A pel-son may tako vast quantities of "Schenek's l'ulmonic Svrup, Seaweed Tonic, ana J1 and rake l'ills," and yet dio if ho docs not avoid a in Florida, nearly everybody Is using Scnenck Mandrake l'ills for tho cliinato is moro likely ice bilious habits than more northern lati-

It Is a well-established fact, that natives of Florida rarely dio of consumption, especially those of the southern part. On the other hand, in Sew England, onc-Uiirdat least of the population dio of this terrible disease. In the Middle States, it does not prevail soiargely: still there are many thousands of cases there. What a vast percentage of life would bo saved if consumptives were as easily alarmed in regard totaking fresh colds as they are aboistscarletfever.small-pox.i-e. 1 but they aro not: they take what they term alittle cold, which

ether still, until tho lungs nre diseased beyond oil hope of euro. Sly advice to persons whoso lungs are ancctoa, even slightly, is to'lay In a stock ofHchenck's Pulmonic Syrup, Schenck's Seaweed_ Tonic, and Schenek's Mandrake Tills, and go to Florida. Irecommend these particular medicines, because I am thoroughly acquainted with their action. I know, that, where they aroused in strict accordance with ay 'directions,"they will do the work that is required. This accomplished, nature will do the rest The physician wlio prescribes for cold, cough, or re

night sweats, and then advises the patient to walk or ri.lo out cver£ dajr, will be sure to have a corpso accordance wi!h tne pnntea oirecuons, except in some cases where a freer use of the Mandrake l'ills is necessary. My object is, to give tone to the stomach,—to get up a good appetite. It Is always a •ood sign when a patient begins to grow hungry: have hopes sClch. With a relish for food, and the gratification of that relish, comes good lrtood, and with it moro flesh, which is closely followed by a healing of the 1 ungs, thcji the coupfe loosens, and abates, the creeping chills and clammy nicht sweats no longer prostrate aud annoy, a. 1 the patient gets well, provided ho avoids taking cold.

on his hands before long. Jly plan lst to give my three medicines In aei ance with the jirintcd directions, except In I irci

Kow, tlicro ure many consumptives w!: have not the means to go to VlorlUa. The quests v. may le asked, Is there no hope for such? Oi .-4n!y there is. My advice to such is, aud ever li:i been, to stayinu warm room during the winter, v. 'th a. temperature of about seventy degrees, vluch should be kept regularly at that point by meai-j a thermometer. Let such a patient take exorcise witlnn tho limits of tho roori Ly walking up and down as iiiuvli os his btr^ngth will ]ermit, in order to keep up a liesiaiy circulation vi i:c id. IhaTO caret!Uiousauds by t''. -is.v amlcanuo so again. Consumption i.i hs easily cured as any other disease, if it is tak' in time, and tho proper kind of treatment is nursuod. Tho fact stands undisputed on record, that Schcnck 1 ulmoiuc Syrup, Mandrake l'ills, and Seaweed Tonic havo cures very many of what seemed to lie hopeless cases of consumption. Go whero you will, you will be almost certain to find soir? poor consumptive who has been rescued from the very Jaws of death by their use.

So far as the Mandrako Tills ato concerned, evorybody should keep a supply of them on band. They act on the liver better than calomel, and leave nono of itshurtftil effects behind. In fact, they are excellent in all cases where a ptwaUvo medicine is required. If you have partaken too. freely, of fruit, and diarrhoea ensues, a dose of the Mandrakes will euro yon. If you are subject to sick headache, take a dose of tho Mandrakes, and they will relieve you in two hours. If yon would obviate the cfl'cct of a change of water, or the too free indulgence in fruit, take ono of tho Mandrakes every night, and you may then drink water, and cat water-melons, pea" com, without the risk They will protect those against chilis and fevers. Try them. They ate perfectly harmless. They can do yon good only.

I havo abandonod my professional visits to Boston and Sew York, but continue to see patients at my office. Ho. 15 North Sixth Street, I hiladelphla, every Saturday, from 9, A.M., to 3, p.m. Those who wish a thorough examination with tho Rcspirometer will bo charged five dollars. The Bcspirometrr doclares the exact condition of the lungs and patients can readily learn whether they aro curable or not. But 1 desire it distinctly understood, that the value of my medicines depends entirely upon their being taken gtricUr Merging to directions.

In conclusion,

I

will say, that when pcrsoos

take my medicines, and their systems aro brought into onealthy condition thereby, they are not so liable t» take cold yet no ono with diseased luwa can bear a sudden change of atmosphere without the liability of greater or less irritation of the bronchial tubes.

Full directions In nil languages ncoompany mv medicines, so explicit and clear that any ono can use them without consulting me, and can be bought from any draggist.
