extra amount of vitality which the circum- I.should give a decided preference to Melionville: It is two miles from river or lake, and it seems almost rtances require. Of all invigorants that have ever been recommended for this purpose, Hostetter'e Stomach Bitters is the purest and the best. Fortified by the daily use of this wholesome ^vegetable tonic, the hnman system may defy the chills'and damps of winter in any latitude- Its effect is to promote a brisk and regular circulation of the blood, and activity in all the secretive organs. Without the slightest tendency to produce fever, it imparts a healthful glow to the surface, and stimulates the exterior vessels to discharge, in the form of gentle perspiration, the useless matter eliminated from the blood. Thus the system is kept unclogged. Fever and ague, biliousness, indigestion and colic, all of which are the common consequences of the searching damps and low temperature of winter, may Be avoided (as well as cured) by a course of this genial tonic and alternative.

to teach as that our bodies
require an increase of vital power to contend with it. Some of even the warm-blooded animals bury themselves in the earth and remain in a state of partial stupefaction until the sea- I son is over, and the elixir of the spring sunshine stimulates their stagnant blood, and restores their vigor. But man although he feels the influence of the season, can protect himself against its inclemency. He has fuel to warm him externally, and can tone and strengthen internal organization and endow it with the

whole time anil attention to thi) study of long disease.'! and consumption, I feel that 1 understi rally the course that ought to be pursued to restore a tolerably bad caso cf diseased lungs to healthy •sonndness. 'lhe first anil most Important step is, for the patient to avoid taking cola: and the best of all piaccg on this continent for tills purpose, in winter, is Florida, well down in the State, where the tempciaturo is regular, and not subject to such variations as in more northern latitudes. Talatka Is a point I can rccommcnd. A good hotelis kept there by Tctcrman. Last winter I saw several persons there whose lungs had been badly diseased, oat
saw several perly diseased,
DI
who, under the healing influence of the climate and my medicines, wtro getting well.
One hundred miles farther down the river is a point which I would prefer to l'ulatka, as the temperature is more even, and tho air dry and bracing. Jellonville and Enterprise are located there. I

imposslblcto take cold there. The tablesinFlorida might be better, and patients complain at times: but that is a good sign, as it indicates a return of appetite and, when this is tho case, they generally increase in flesh, and then the lungs ni Ubt heal.
Jacksonville, Illbernia, Green Cove, and many other places in various pr.rts of Fiorii'
I,
can bo sart
ly recommended to consumptives \v nter. SI. reasons for saying so are, that pin are less liable to take cold thero than is a les3 even temperature: and it is not .'-ry to sny, that, where a consumptive person exposes himsell to frequent coMs, ho is certain to die shortly: therefore my advice is, go well down into the State, out of the reach cf prevailing east winds, and fogs Jacksonville, or almost any other of the localitie lhave named, will benefit tlioso who are troubles with a torpid liver, a disordered loniaeh, derangcr bowels, sore throat, or cough but, fur tkoso whosi lunps are diseased, ainoro southern point la car ncstly recommended.
For fifteen years prior to 1X3,1 was professionally in Kcw York, Boston, iialtimore, anil pliia every week, where 1 saw and examined on an
average five hundred patients a week. A practice socxtensive, embracing every possible phnseoflung diseaso, has enabled mo to understand tlicdiscaso fully and lienco my caution in regard to taking cola. A person nny tako vast quantities of "Schenck's l'lilinonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic, and mandrake rills," and yet die if ho does not avoid taking cold.
InFlorida, nearly everybody is using Schenck's Mandrake l'ills for the cliwato Is moro likely to produca bilious habits than more northern latitudes. It is a well-established fact, that natives of Florida rarely die of consumption, especially those of the southern part. On tlio other hand. In New England, one-third at least of tlio population die of this terrible disease. In the Jlidd'o States, it docs not prevail so largely still there are many thousands of cases there. What a vast percentage of life would bo saved if consumptives were as easily alarmed In re^ ard to taking fresh colds as they are about scarlet fcver,8mall-pox,tc. I but they are not: they take what tiiey term a little cold, which they are credulous enough to believe will wear off in a few days. They pay no attention to it, and hence it lays tho foundation for another and another still, until the lungs arc diseased beyond all hope of cure.
Sly advice to persons whoso lungs are atrccted, even slightly. Is to lay In a stock of .Schenck's l'ulmonic Syrup, Schenck's Seaweed Tonic, and Schenck's Mandrake Fills, and ga to Florida. I rccommeAd these particularmcdieines, because I am thoroughly acquainted wltli their action.. I know, that, where tliey are used in strict accordance with my directions, they will do tho work that Is required. This accomplished, naturo will do the rest The physician who prescribes for cold, cough, or night sweats, and then advises the patient to walk or rido out every day, wllljio sure to have a corpso on his hands beforo long. llyplanis, to givo my three medicines fn accordance with the printed directions, except in somo cases where a freer use of the Jiandrako l'ills is necessary. Sly object Is, to give tone to tho stom-' ach,—to get up a good appetite. It is always a good sign when a patient begins to grow hungry: I have hopes of suck. With a relish for food, and the gratification of that relish, comes good blood, and with It more flesh, which is closely followed by a healing of the lungs,—then the cough loosens and abates, tho creeping chills and clammy nicht sweats no longer prostrate and annoy, and the patient gsts well, provided be avoids taking cold.
Vow, there are many consumptives who have not the means to go to Florida. The question may be askod. Is there no hope for such Certainly there Is. lly advice to such is, aud ever has been, to stay In a warm room during tho winter, with a temperature of about seventy degrees, which should be kept regularly at that point by means of thermometer. Let such a patient tako his exercise within the limits of tho room by walking up •nddown as much as his strength will permit, in tecp up a healthy circulation of the blood. I havo cared thousands by this system, awl can do so again. Consumption is as easily cured as' any other disease. If it Is takcti In tlmo.and tho proper he a an l'ulmoalc

So far as the Mandrake Tills aro concerned, everybody should keep a supply of them on hand. They act on the liver better than calomel, and leave none of its hurtful effects behind. In fact.
they are excellent in all cases where a purgative medicine is required. If you have partaken too freely of firuit, and diarrhoea ensues, a dose of the Mandrakes will cure you. If you aro subject to alCk beadachc, take a dose of the Mandrakes, and they will relieve you in two hours. If you would obviate tho effect of a change of water, or the too bee Indulgence in fruit, take one of the Jlandrokes every night, and you may then drink water, and cat water-melons, pears, apples, plums, peaches, or corn, without the risk of being made sick by them. They will protect those who live In damp sitaations against chills and fevers. Try them. They are perfectly harmless. They can do you good enly.
I have abandoned my professional visits to Boaton and New York, but continue to see patients at myofflce,No. IS North Sixth Street, every Saturday, from 9,
A.M.,toS, P.M.Philadelphia,
Those who
wish a thorough examination with the ltcspirometer will be charged five dollars. Tho Bespirometer declares the exact condition of the lungs and patients can readily learn whether they aro curable or not But 1 desiro 11 distinctly understood, that the value of my medicines depends entirely upon their being taken strictly according to directions.
In conclusion, I will say, that when persons take my medicines, and their systems aro brought into a healthy condition thereby, they aro not so liable to tako cold yet no one with diseased lungs can bear a sudden change of atmosphere without the liability of greater or less irritation of the bronr chial tubes.
Full directions in all languages accompany my medicines, so cxplieit ar.d clear that anr one can use them without consulting me, and can bs bought from any druggist.
