CHRISTINA NILSSON

gave a concert in

an Illinois village, on Christmas Day, devoting the proceeds to the erection of a church for the use of

a

colony of her

countrymen. The Swedes were too poor to buy tickets, and she gave them a special concert afterward. The people crowded around her at its close and greeted her in her native tongue. She knelt on the plain board floor and kissed all the chil dren, and greeted, among others, a Swedish woman who came forward with

a

tremble on her lips, for she had been a playmate of Christina's twenty years ago in Smciand, where they bore fagots together from the wood.

CORRECTION.—In Capt. Potter's communication yesterday, in quoting Engineer Strout's report, the words in italic in the paragraph below, were accidently omitted: 4. No authority has ever been given to change the grade at the foot of Fifth street or upon any portion of Parke street.'

RAILROAD.—Mr. D. Hitchcock

and Dr. W. T. Sylvester, of Areola, Illi nois, the President and Vice President ot the Paris and Decatur railroad, were in the city yesterday, enroute east to make arrangements for the purchase of iron* The object of their stop in this city was to confer with some of our leading citizensin regard to extending the road to this city—that is, to form a junction with the Vandalia road three miles out. Thi:would make the entire distance from thi city to Decatur 87 miles, there being twelve miles to build to form the connecting link between Paris and this city. From Paris to Decatur the distance is seventy-two miles. Twenty-two miles of the line is already graded, and thebalance of the grading is under contract, to be completed by the first of June next# Messrs. Hitchcock and Sylvester started for the east last night, and during their absence the subject is worthy of serious consideration on the part of our citizens.

THE MACARTHY

BIBLE SOCIETY ANNIVERSARY.—The twenty-ninth annual meeting of the Vigo County Bible Society was held at Asbury Chapel, on Sunday evening. The exercises were of a very entertaining character, and the audience room was literally full to overflowing, as the aisles had to be supplied with extra seats for the accommodation of the throng.

Capt. S. II. Pottpr, the President of (he Association, presided. A portion of the 119th Psalm was read by Rev. J. W. Greene, of Centenary Chnrch, after which Rev. E. F. Howe offered prayer.

The Secretary, E. M. Walmsley, then read the Reports from the Treasurer, Depositary and Canvassing Agents for the city and county. A synopsis, given below, chows the agg-iegate work during the past year: No. of families visited 3.200 found destitute of a copy of the

The canvass of the city by Rev. P. R. Vanatta, and of the county by Rev. Geo. ^allahau, has been very thoroughly and efficiently performed, and the Board of Managers especially recognize the arduout labors of the County Agent, who has, had a peculiarly hard field to operate in, owing to mismanagement on the part of his predecessor in the work.

Rev. John Thompson, the Stat§ Agent, fhen addressed the audience for about fifteen minutes, giving a general outline of the present and future work of the American Bible Society. He was fol loved by Hon. R. W. Thompson, whose soul-stir-ring address was one of the finest that weever heard him deliver. Its delivery occupied one hour and a half. Of course mere synopsis, such as we can give, would not do justice to the speaker, and we are pleased to state that at the conclusion of the address a copy was requested for publication entire, accompanied by a vote of thanks.

The election of officers for the ensuing vear was then held and resulted as fol lows:

President—S. H. Potter. Vice President—Rev. B. W. Smith. Secretary—E. Walmsley. Treasurer—C. I. Ripley. Board of Managers—The Ministers of he city in conjunction with the members of the Society.

The singing interspersed throughout the exercises was especially good, being led by Prof. T. O'Kane of Delaware, Ohio, who is here arranging for the Sacred Concert to be held this evening at Asbury

Church. A collection was taken upon suggestion of the State Agent for the purpose of purchasing Bibles to send to the city of Rome. The amount raised will, with a promised addition, be sufficient to send about-100 volumes to the Papal city.

The Bible cause has received a fresh impulse through these Anniversary proceedings, and it is confidently believed that the present year will prove one of the most successful since the organization of the Society.

MINSTRELS

GAGG'S Art Emporium,

were

greeted with a fair audience at the Opera House last evening, and the performance seemed to give general satisfaction. Our people, however, seldom "go back" upon the cork opera, and we confess that modera negro minstrelsy has much to recommend it to the public. We enjoy with much pleasure their lovely and plaintive ballads, which are warbled so sweetly, delight in the patter of their iigs and hoe downs laugh at their eccentricities, jests and jokes, and go into ecstacies over their burlesques, ^uch area few of the huinorsome diversions we find in minstrelsy, and when exemplified by such a troupe as Macarthy's, he desire to pass an evening with them is irresistible. The company appears for the second and last time this evening, and we advise all lovers of artistic mirth to go to the Opera House, if for nothing else than to see Harry Macarthy on his inimitable personations.

Invoicing.—Tuell, Ripley & Deming's store will be closed to-day. We are invoicing and marking down winter goods. We- will commence our clearance sales to morrow at greatly duced prices. ,• dlt TUELL, RIPLEY & DEMING,
