Considering the extreme sensitiveness of

the human body, and. that it is unprotected exeept by artificial covering, from the action

of cold, it is not strange that at this season it is liable to many disorders. The skin exercises a powerful influence over the stomach and bowels, and when its functions are int"rrupted

by

sudden chills that seal the pores

an 1 prevent evaporation from the surface, internal congestion is apt to ensue. The digestive organs never perform their office properly when this is the case, and the waste matter of the system, which should be discharged in part through the perspiratory gl.inds, having no other ou.let than the b. w. els and the kidneys, constipation and a variety of renal diseases are more or less prevalent. Dyspepsia, where it exists, is also aggravated by these causes. The most effective preventive of, and remedy for, disturpances of this nature is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. Acliug as a stimulant and tonic, it rouses the stomach and tho intestines, imparting to those important org..ns both activity anH regularity. it also .operates as a sudorilc, by tonjng the vessels of the skin and promoting the free passage of exhausted uintter through that natural sle-ve of the system Being a mild diuretic, it gives a healthful impulse to the action of the kidney-, where ihere is a tendency to dropsy and as a blood depurent and nervine, has a highly beneficial effect in rheumatic cases. It combines in hapcy proport ons th- tonic, alterative, aperient, antiseptic. diaphoretic and nntibilious properties requisite t'nr'he restoration of a system generally disordered, and has no equal as a winder medicine.

DR. SCUEXCK ADVISES COSSUMH T1VES TO GO TO FLORIDA

bad case ct'discast'd lunys to althy

soundness, 'ilie first and nust Important step is, for tho patient to avoid taking cold and the best of all piaces on this continent for this purpose, in winter, is Florida, well down in the State, where the temperature is regular, and not subject to such ariations ao in mora northern latitudes. Talatka a point I can recommend. A kood hotells kept there hy Tetennan. Last winter I saw several persons there whose lungs had been badly diseased, but ho, under the healing influence of the climate and inadieines, were getting well. ne hundred miles farther down the river is a point which I would prefer to 1 alatka, as the tcm-

SIcllonvillo

eraturcismoroevcn, and the air dry and bracing. and Enterprise are located there. I should give a decided preference to llcllonville: it Is two miles from river or lake, and It seems almost impnsslbleto take cold th-'re. The tables in Florida might bo better, and patients complain at times: ,fc

but tint Is a good slpi, as It indicates a return of

appetite

and, when tills is tho caso, they generally

increase in flesh, and then the lungs mu»t ileal. Jacksonville, llibemia. Green Cove, and manv

other places In various parts of Florida, can bo suit ly recommended to consumptives in winter. JI reasons fur saying so are, that patients are less liable to take cold there than wlicre there Is a less even temperature: and it Is not necessary to s.iy, that, where a consumptive person exposesliimsell to frequent colds, lio is certain to dio shortly: therefore iuy advicq is, go weJJ down into the Slate, out of tho reacli of prevailing cast wlmls pud fogf Jacksonville, or almost any other of tlio localitie havo named, will benefit those who arctioublei. with a torpid liver, a disordered stomach, dernngei' bowels, soro throat, or cough but, fi.rthosc wbo» lunvs are diseased, a moro southern point la car neslly recommended.

For fifteen years prior to 13G.1,1 was professionally In New York, Huston,

l'.altimore,and

1 hiladei-

phla every week, where 1 saw and examined on an average flvo hundred patients a week. A practice

soextensh e, embracing every possible pliMeoflung disease, lias enabled lno to iimlerstand the discaso fully and lience my caul ion in regard to taking cola. A person iny tako vast quantities of "Schenck's 1'iilmon.c Svrup, Seaweed 'ionic, and JIandrake l'llls," and yet die if he dues not avoid taking cold.

In Florida, nearly everybody is using Schenck's Slandrako l'ills for the climato Is moro likely toproduce bilious habits than more northern latitudes. It Is a well-established fact, that natives of Florida rarely dio or consumption, especially those of tho southern part. On liiooiuer hand, in Jew England, onu-iliirdat least of the population die of this terrible disease. In the -Middle Mates, it does not prcvailsolargely: still there arc many thou ands of cases there. Wliat a vast percentage of life would bo saved If consumptives were as easily alarmed in regard totaking fresh colds as they are about scarlet fever, smail-pux,itc. I but they are not: they tako what tliey term a little culd, hich they nro credulous enough to believe will wear olf In a fen-days. They pay no attention to it, and hence it lays tho foundation for another nnu an-' ether still, until the lungs are diseased beyond all hope of cure. 11 advice to persons whose lungs nro affected, even slightly, is to lay in a stock of .Schenck's Pulmonic Hyrup, Schenck's Seaweed Tonic, and Schenck's Mandrake 1'ills, and go to Florida. I recommend theso particularmcdicines, because I am thorough acquainted with tlielr action. I know, that, wliero tliuy are used in strict accordance witli my directions, tliey will do the work that is required. Tills accomplished, naturo wilt do the rest, 'ilie physician who prescribes for cold, couth, or nlyht sweats, and then advises the patient to walk or ndo out every day, will be sure to have a corpse on his hands before long. liyplanis, to give my three medicines in accordance with tho printed directions, except in some cases where a freer use of the llandrake l'ills is necessary. IIy object is, to give tone to the stomach,—to get up a good appetite. It is always a

sign when a patient begins to grow hungry: have hopes of such. With a relibh fur food, and the gratification of that relish, comes good bloud, and with it more flesh, which Is closely followed by a healing of tho lungs, then tho couph loosens and abates, tlio creeping chills and clammy ni^Ut swenta no longer prostrate aid annoy, and the patient gets well, provided ho avoids taking pold. there are many consumptives who have not the moans tu go to Florida. The question may be asked, 1 there no hope for such'( Certainly thcrois. lly advico to such is, and ever lias bccu, to slay inn warm room during tho winter, with a temperature of about seventy degrees, which should be kept regularly at that point by means of a thermometer. Let such a patient take his excrclse within the limits or tho room by walking up —in permit, in of tho blood.

and down as much as his strength will permit, in order to keep up a healthy circulation of tho bltxxl. Jhuvo cured thousands by this system, and can do SO again- Consumption is as easily cured as any other disease, if it is taken in time, and the proper kind of treatment isjtursuad. '1 li« fact stands pn disputed on rccora, that Schenck's 1 uimonlo Syrup, Mandrake l'ills, and seaweed Tonic have cureu very many of what seemed to bo hopeless cases of consumption. Go where you will, you will be almost certain to find soir poor consumptive who his been rescued from the very Jaw* of death by their use.

So far as the Mandrake Tills are concerned, everybody should keep a supply of them on hand. They act on the liver better than calomel, and leave none of Its hurtful effects behind. In fact, they are excellent in all cases where a purgative mealcino is required. If you have partaken too freely of fruit, and diarrhoea ensues, a doso of the Handr.ikcs will cure you. If you are subject to aick headache, take a dose of tho Mandrakes, and they will relieve you in two hours. If you would obviate the cllcct of a change of water, or the too free indulgence in fruit, tako one of tho Mandrakes every night, and you may then drink water, and eat water-melons, pears, apples, plums, peaches, or corn, without the risk of being made sick by them. They will protect tlioso who live in damp equations against chilis and fevers, 'try them, 'iliey are perfectly harmless. They can do you good uly. 1 have abandoned my professional visit- to Baaton and Xew York, but continue to see pt ::cnts at my office. No. 15 Nortli Sixth Street, l'liil lelphla, every Saturday, from H, A.M., to 3, P.M. 1 '»*c who wish a thorough examination with tho Kosp rometer will bo charged five dollars. The Resp.rometer declares tho exact condition of the lunc and patients can readily learn whether they are curable Or not. ilut desire It distinctly understood, that the value of my medicines depends entirely upon their being taken strictly according to dliestions.

In conclusion, I will nav, that when pcrsoaa take my medicines, and their systems arc brought into a healthy condition thereby, they arc not so liablo to take cold yet no one with diseased lun^s
