It iniimarc-T that the teachers from tin metropolitan city have given toe cue to its lachrymose effusion. It is very probable, as iL intimates, that the as.-ociutio was not a fineness. But -ince the casual ob erver even could detect that the In lianapolis teachers vo ed solid almost every time—and always carried their point*- even to the complete abnegation of the progranfrue of tiie Executive Coin mii'.ee, very often—it in extreme bad taste for either they or their friends to raise, a dti-r to hide a failure. There are
men and times that can appropriately ak of the public and the /ircss the charily their silence, and this seema emphatically t- be a ca-e in hand. As. to the hospitality of the citizens of Torre Haute—one newspaper f-quib can not. damage its reputation. The score and hundreds of the teacher? of Indiana who have shared the hospitality o! our citizens at other meetings of the State Association and tn-'.itu.es. will vindicate our fair fa sue, and silence the //.v»ir.' of tin fugleman of the SrntincL During the .-esidon of the laic Association it was announced that there were quite a number more of fice home- open more than these were touchers de-inng to accept the same. Ne«' YtHit'.-i At.i.s will be in order to-day. Originally this custom v-as intended as a friendly interchange of civilities and good wishes at the commence ment of the year, but modern innovations too often convert it into an excuse for getiing drunk respectably, and a reform in thii regard is loudly called for. Ladies of Torre Haute, we ask that on this day you do not convert your fine residences into free bars, where young men may become drunk at the expense of their entertainers. Young men of this city have sufficient temptations already, without the intoxicating cup being presented by woman's hand.
It is a serio ts question whether it would not be a benefit to all concerned if the custom of New Year's calls was suspended for a time, until wo could get back to the style of the good "old times." Such a suspension, however, would he a sore grievance to a class of young men who are pisse-vcd with boundless brass and an unlimited capacity for wine, and who take advantage of the custom to force
themselves into houses which would be firmly closed again=t them on ordinary occasions. This evil does not exist in this city to so great an extent as in some of the larger cities, but it is growing.
THE authors of the several addressft circulated by to day, «o far as we have been able to learn, are the following:
