i'HE successful completion of the Mont
Ctrii* Tunnel -.till direct public attention more than over before to that now being
hteadily drilled in the western part of
Ma-.-achii.=eU?, and known as the Hoosae.
The mountains Ujrongh which it is slo'.v ly' pa-hing its way are a disconnected rarifreof the great Green Mountain chain,
which stretches from Canada to Connectic-
cut.and which gives its own peculiar char
acter and grandeiii' of form to these lesser
heads. The name of the-e mountains
comes from the river, which was called Hoo-ac by the Indians, and whose sources
.-tart from separate summits at the north
and south of the range, and winding
downward through gorge, gully am] glen,
meet in the valley and flow on to
the IIud.-.L-:i. The mountain which
is making itself and sisters a world
wide celebrity by the iron pavrd
thoroughfare which is soon to traverse its bed, liesscven miles distant, directly east of Williarostown, in a gap between two
nearer mountains.
The tunnel of the Iloosac will be a cut
of nearly five miles from cast to west, and
is now being worked by three gang-at four dificrent points, day and night. Near
theca-tern entrance is the biiilding which contains the machines—four of .steam and
five of water power—for compressing air and forcing it into the tunnel for the u-o
of the drilling machine*, and (o supply
ventilation. The aii is conveyed in an
iron pipe, which is laid about two feet
beneath the rail track. The tunnel on tliis side is opened, and the rails laid
down to the extent of a mile and a half, but the work is not completed to thai-
length. The portal is twenty feet in height, and twenty-four fee: in width
which will be the width and height
of the entire tunnel when comple
ted—a half mile of that size, with its arched, rocky roof and side-*, is finished
At tbi-point, the half mile Itniit, and
also at the extreme end of the work, wherw the virgin soil is being bla-ted,
gangs of men are employed night and day at labor. Three hundred and ,= ix!v
men are employed at this side of the
mountain, two hundred at the we-t open ing (he oppo-itc side, and eighly-five
at the shaft 11 the summit. The men
at the three different locations wo.k on the eight-hour system, going in to labor
and coming out three times in (he twen-ty-lo hours. The wages are from to

PKCUMAii instance of the mean
ness with which the Kentucky Legisla
ture has been pursuing the colored race, and as an in .iance, also, of the itneonatitu-
finnttl law\s which, if not repealed, must
be nullified by the courts, the Louisville Commercial mentions (he sixth sec!ion of
the homestead exemption law of Febru
ary 10, lSfii). After providing that the dwelling-house of everv head of a family
shall, to the extent of one thousand dollars in value, be exempt from all execu
tion and from all compuUorv process for
the payment of deb! and that even a mortgage tip if, unless a debtor's wife
joins in it, shall not be enforced, the sixth section limits all the bandits of the act to
while men. The wise and kind-hearted
law linkers perhaps only made the law to protect while laud-holders against
suils by colored farm hands for wages,
fnder no circumstances were colored
folks to be encouraged in the purchase of lands.
Tim Chicago Ilcpuiilican claims that
the Western News Company of that citv is fairly entitled to divide (he honors of tlu'"I Tea! lien Chime" with li:r.T Haute. Ihe illustrations of (hose popular verses, published by Mr. Walsh's great establishment, have tickled the public palate
beyond anything of the kind ever attempted. The lithographing is very line,
and the entire work is done in as good
shape as could have been produced in New York, we vemure to s.iv. The demand lor it is far beyond even Walsh's power to supply. Orders come in every

Philadelphia Inquirer thinks that
if the commissioners whom it is propo-ed to send to San Domingo can find the
real sentiments of the people of that is
land they will he far more astute than
any Americans now in S.ui Domingo.— One ha'l of our shrewd countrymen send
word that the .minieans are anxious to
at once incorporate themselves with the I nited Sintcs on any lerms or no terms
at all while the other half insist that the 'slanders are overwhelmingly opposed to ceding one inch of territory to our gov

prevents them
from giving unmistakable expression to their real feelings. Hoiv the proposed
commissioners are going to discover the

majority and minority reports and leave
the real issue in as much uncertainty as is now. This annexation business al
ways was troublesome in all nations and in all place*.

terms Governor of the .State. In addition
to the other conceded qualifications of
the latter for the place, it is urged that
both Senators ought not to be taken
again from Detroit as at present, and Governor I3:.Aiit is undoubtedly the strongest man proposed from the interior. Hon. T. W. Ferry, who represents
ihe Grand Rapids District, and is a man of good abilities and standing, is also spo
