may interest some of our matrimonially inclined young people to know that in the eastern cities according to the Philadelphia Prc^, the matrimonial fever will rage with its accustomed violence this season, and the exlra extravagance latterly imposed by custom upon wedding displays will be kept up, notwithstanding the efforts of sundry society leaders to institute are turn to the old-fashioned sobriety and economy in such matters. THE COURTS.—The Judge Patterson, has December Gth.

The Criminal Court, Judge Long, presiding, convened at 9 A. M. yesterday, and

is rapidly taking the place of I was in session during the forenoon. The wood, in this city, both for heating and case of the State vs. John Remlin, charged with the larceny of a coat, was called and. tried by a jury, which returned a

verdict sending John to the county jail for five days, and imposing an additional penalty of a fiv.e dollar fine.

Judge Long then heard the argument in the case of Peter Phillips, brought out of jail on a writ of habeas corpus, Sant. C. Davis appearing for the State, and Sid. B. Davis for the prisoner. Judge Long, after hearing the argument, discharged the prisoner from custody.

The Mayor's Court, Judjje CookerJy presiding, has had quite a run of business since our last issue.

Dan Hardin, being hardened in his sins was up before this Court, charged with calling some ladies very hard names The gallant Court fined and ccsted him in default of which he languishes in the Stewart Bastile.

Michael Ryan and Wnt, Secrist were "pulled," for enjoying a noi--y and disor derly drunk. They were duly brough before His Honor, who fined them $6 each, which they paid and wended their way homeward, no doubt sincere!}' regret ting that they had not remained there.

Henry Steikman was up on a charge of assault and battery. He was fined and costed to the extent of $7.

There was a very complicated case tils posed of in this Court, the facts of which are in substance as follow*: A man named George Cahall brought a dressed hog to this cily from Clay county and to Thomas Wahler, a butcher at the Market House, for $13,65. Wahler did not have (he money and said he would send home and get it. Cahall then went away and returned a short time afterward for his money. Wahler told him that he had not received it yet Mr. Sceburger jokingly told him that Wahler would not pay him that he was trying to cheat him out of his hog, and told him that he would give him $13 for the account, to which Cahall assented Seeburger testified that he paid Cahall,

Shortly after the close of this case a cor.plc of gentlemen, who were witnesses in the case modestly demanded of the court, there fees as witnesses. Thev couldn't sec why they should have to wait for their fees until the costs ofthe suit were paid in.

John Link is at last in the hands of the "cops'' who have been on his trail for sometime. The history of this Link for the past year will not be uninteresting, or at least so much of it as relates to his public acts. About a year ago he was ared and brought before the tribunal presided over by the Mayor, on a charge of associating with "soiled doves.'' He was tried, found guilty, fined and costed $7, and appealed to a higher court. His case had a hearing before that court, which resulted in the judgment of the court below, being affirmed and running his '"little bill'' up to $62 35, which he never paid, and since which time he has been in great demand by the enterprising officers of this county, who have had him in their clutches on one or two occasions,

scene of Joe Jefferson's earliest theatrics exploits, and when the Opera House ens terprise was first started, it was suggested as quite fitting that the distinguished personator of Rip Van Winkle should open it when completed, and a large number of his admirers have hoped that such an engagement conld be made. That this can be accomplished is hardly pro* bable, judging from the following item from a New York paper:

It has frequently been asked when Jefferson will cease to play Rip Van Win kle? The proper response is, when the drama has ceased to draw, which, from present appearances, will be some time in 1890. Jefferson's engagement is peculiar, being without limitation. It is to con tinue indefinitely in other words, as long as Jefferson wishes. The terms between him and Booth are that they share the receipts after deducting $500 a night to pay the expenses of the house. There have often been in the theater $2,300 and $3,400 audiences so that Jefferson has had for his share $900 and $950 a night. At a profit of from $4,000 to $5,000 a week almost any one might afford to plav Rip Van Winkle.

STOP A PAPER.—In

an ex

change we find the following illustration of the proper mode of proceeding, when it is considered advisable, to discontinue a newspaper. Our subscribers who entertain a desire to have their paper stopped will please commit the following to mem. ory, and govern themselves accordingly: "You have an undoubted right to stop a newspaper whenever you are disposed, upon payment of all arrearages. Do not hesitate to do so on account of any "tenderness of feeling" for the editor. Don't be so pitiful with a conteiuptious "I don't want it any longer and have '-refused" written on the margin, and have the paper returned to the editor. No gentleman ever stopped a paper in that way, no matter if his head is covered with gray hairs which should be honorable. If you do not wish longer to receive a newspaper, write a note to the editor, like a man, saying so--and be sure that arrearages are paid. That is the war to stop a newspaper."
