The Montreal Mining Company lirst made the discovery that the inland contained silver, ami by their agents i-tink a t-haft on the island but thc-e knew liuieor nothing about mining, and the water coming in upon lhetu, further woikmg oi their mine was abandoned as iifcle-s. it was only this last summer thai Captain F. and his company eoni|deted their bargain with the Montreal Company for the island, and secured it by pa-ing, or agreeing to pay, !?2o0,000 lot- the entire lOS,000 acres.— They went immediately to work at improving the mine in a ''workmanlike manner." Their lir-dsiep was tosurrotind the island with eiibs of timber, lilled with stone, to -eivo as a breakwater and ice-breaker and within these cribs a cofferdam was ull and puddied with clay, having the eii'eet of making the whole interior of the i.-land nearly water-tight, at least from the intrusions of the lake.—The next step was to set tip two large syphon pump- woiked by steam, by which tlie inside was pumped dry. or nearly so, and it has since bt en found that a very little working oi the pumps daily keeps the island deaf of water entirely. Then they went to woik laying bare the vein and now have exposed seventy feet in length, and thid it to be a true fissure vein, with pi 1 pendictilar walls—the vein of silver matiix being calcareous spar with some little quartz intermixed. The vein is eight feet wide, and eye-witnesses from there state tha for one quarter of this width it will average seventy per cent, of pure silver. On the lirst trial, afterthewater was gotten out, six men took out $ !•",000 worth of silver in four days and up to the latest accounts the working lias been con-in.led at about this rate— Alt cady 1'Ji) ban ets of native silver, estimated to be worth $75 000 to 5100.000, have been shipped.
