Adventure of mi Irishman with :i Diamond Rattlesnake. From the Fort Smith Herald.]

An Irishman by the name of Thompson, driving a small sulky between this place and Fort Gibson, on Monday last, coming down here with the mail, came across a very large diamond rattlesnake in the road. His mule shied at it—he jumped out of the sulky, grabbed the snake with his left hand around the neck, held it up, and jumped into the vehicle and drove half a mile to the station, got out, walked into the house where there were two or three Indian women, called for a needle and thread, which were given him by one of the women, when he sat down and deliberately sewed up the mouth of the snake, then threw it down on the floor and told the women to keep it until his return. While he held the snake by the throat, in its writlnngs it bit him on the linger two or three times, but as he' was under the influence of whisky, and the Indian women gave him a few more drinks, he experienced no harm from the bites on his linger. After the Irishman left, some of the Cherokee men belonging to the house came in. killed the snake and skinned it. Our informant, (Jeorge Strong, of the mail line, says he saw the skin of the snake at the house where the Irishman carried it, and afterward saw Thompson, who had a few marks oil his linger, but was "all right."

The bile of the diamond rattlesnake is considered bv the Indians as incurable.

A Little Story of the President. The San Francisco Bulletin tells a pretty good tiling about President Grant:

A tolerably well known lawyer of San Francisco visited Washington recent] in the course of a trip through the Eastern States. He put tip at Willard's, and having Keen pretty near all the lions there about the capital, concluded that it would not do lo go home without callin^ on the President. JI looked up a Congressional friend whom he knew to be acquainted with General Grant, and at once suggested he should take him to the White House and introduce him. "I want to see the General," said he, "for you see, 1 knew him out in California. Of course he won't recollect me but then 1 thought I might just as well see him, now that I am here."

They called at the White House that evening, and found General Grant disengaged and pleased to receive them. Our friend from San Francisco was introduced and very cordially greeted. Anybody from California was always welcome to the house, the General said.

After indulging in the usual commonplace*, the visitor ventured to remark: "1 knew you, General, in California but that is some time ago, and of course you don't recollect me." "Well, indeed, I do not. I am somewhat forgetful of old faces, and cannot think now when it was that I saw you." "I did not expect you would, General but I recollect you very well. I saw you nt Knight's ferry, in the winter of ." "Ah, indeeik"

An amused smile flitted over the President's countenance as he said: "15y the way, how is travel on the road now? Is it as good as it used to be when I was there? "Well, now, do you know that I think that as soon as I get through here I'll go back to California and keep that ferry again?" "Indeed!" "Yes, I really believe I will for if travel is anyway near as good now as it was then, I'll do better therethan I wo dd anywhere else. Since I've been here I have never met a California!! that hadn't seen me at Knight's ferry."

"Are \'ou Going East J"

"Well, neighor II are you ?oing East this season "Don't think I shall that trip last year rather used me up." "You didn't go by the Broad Guuge Erie Iiaihvay, then did von?"' "Xo, sir i( I had, I'd have been a happy man to day."' "H'hv, how's that?" 'Weil, in the first place, if I had gone hv the Erie 1 should have reached New York in season to meet an important engagement as it was, I went by another Line, was several hours late, and lost thousands of dollars by it." "You iceollect my advice before vou I started, don't you?" "Yes and I wi-h I had followed it.-

W hv, I am told that the Erie cars are foot wider than those inordinary use, and that a man can live in them both day and night just as comfortably as lie can at the Sherman or the Gait House." "Ya? and get just as good and regit lar meals at the Company's hotels along the line." "That's an item, for I always get hungry in traveling. But where do you connect with the=e Erie coaches? I might take a notion to run on East before long, for they say it's alone worth the price of a ticket to see the Drawing-Room Cars." "They run four Daily Express Trains, starting from Cincinnati, from Cleveland, from Dunkirk, from Buffalo and from Rochester, and running through without change to New York. You can take the Broad Guage cars to either of these points, and in either case will have a view of svcli scenery as you never saw in your life, unless you've been to Switzerland." "Xo, I never have, but I am going to New York by the Erie Railway the lirst week I can spare, and shall take my whole family along. Where do you buy the tickets?" "Oh, anywhere! All the principal ticket agents throughout the West and South have them lor sale. Our agent here says he has all he can do to supply the demand." "Does he! Well, I'll hurry over to the depot, I reckon, and invest right away.— Good day, sir." Sept. 2'J-tf.

SPECIAL NOTICES.

Spread tlie Truth.

Pome medical men insist that it is undignified to advertise a remedy, however valuable it may be- Queer reasoning this. It is like saying that an article which the world needs should be 1 id in a corncr— that benefits and blessings may be too widely diffused—that the means of protecting and restoring health should be a clysc monopoly, and not accessi bid to all. The argument is bad. Itis worse than that it is inhuman. Suppose Uostetter's Stomach Hitters—an absolute specific for dyspepsia, billiousress and nervous debility—had never been known beyond tho repertoire of the faculty, what would have been the consequence? Insfead of cur-'ng and invigorating millions, tho good cifects of the preparation would have been confined to a comparative few. There is the highest authority for saying that light should not be hid under a bushel that whatever is excellent should be placed as a city on a hill, where all men can take cognizance of it. It is upon this principle that tho Bitters have been advertised and con inue te be advertised in every newspaper of any prominence in the western hemisphere, and that the spontaneous testimonials in its favor have been translated into all written languages. Thousands enjoy perfect health to-day who would be languishing on beds of sietness if the newspapers had not spread t'.ie truth with rcItard, tu thin inu'iiialetl invigurant and corrective far and wide. Suppose profit han been reaped from this publicity. Is that any argument aeainst it? Jf tho public has been protected if lives have been saved if the feeble havo been strengthed and the sick restored, great good has been accomplished: and who so mean as to grudjze to exeitions thus directed their fair reward? ocl9-dwlw
