Mobile, the name of whose commander has escaped me. MacMahon, although wounded, commanded in chief on the French side, and dash'ed down on the scattered Prussian skirmishers, who without deigning to form in line—squares are never used by Prussian infantry received the cuirraseurs with a crashing quick fire at about 100 yards distance, loading and firing with extreme rapidity and unfailing precision into the dense French squadrons. The effect was startling. Over went horses

and

men in numbers, in masses, in hundreds, and the regiment of proud French cuirraseurs went hurriedly back in disorder, went back faster than it came, went back scarcely a regiment in strength and not at all a regiment in form. Its comely array was suddenly changed into helpless and shapeless crowds of flying men. The moment the cuirraseurs turned back, brave Prussians actually dashed forward in hot pnrsuit at double quick, infhnfrp' plainly pushing flying cavalry. SGcU it thing has not often been recorded in the annals of war.

I know not when an example to compare precisely with this has occurred. There was no more striking episode in the battle. When the French infantry saw their cavalry thus fleeing before foot ,.soldiers, tliey in their turn came forward and Attacked 0ie Prussians. The Prussians w»it«d quietly, patiently enduring the'rapfif ted "telling fire from chassepots, until their enemies had drawn as near as to be within one hundred yards from them. Then they returned with needly gun the rapid fire from the chassepots. and the French infantry could no more endure the fire than the cavalry to \vho*e rescue they had come. The infantry fled in its turn and followed the cavalry to ilic place from [which they had come, that is be-

DENVER. JU -k. EXCURSION PARTY.

S DENVER CITY, Sept. 55.—1The excursion party arrived about 7 .o'clock this evening.* All well. Nothing of rfpeMftl note occurred after leaving Kit'-Carson this morning, until their arrival at Kiowa, thirty miles from here, where platform cars were attached to the train, affording the party a view of the mountains at Box Lllder station, the Rocky range, extending many miles north and south, distinctly marked against the evening sky, which was brilliantly illuminated by a gorgeous sunset. At Schuyler station the view was more grand and the party greeted the splendid scene with three cheers. On arriving at the depot here, the party singing the Star Spangled Banner in full chorus, they were greeted with enthusiastic cheers by a large crowd of citizens, headed by Governor McCook. The party entered carriages and, preceded by a band of music, were driven through the city, after which they took supper on the train. To-morrow morning the party will go to Cheyenne.

THE RAIN on Saturday evening interfered with the Democratic meeting, and Senator Hendrick's speaking was postponed until Wednesday eveniag.

THE pulpits of all the leading churches in the city were, filled yesterday, and it being a glorious autumn day the attendance at church was greater than for several weeks past.

"DEMOCRATIC ECONOMY," SO far as this State is concerned, is splendidly illustrated in the fact that the average tax. for purely local purposes^ in the Democratic counties is 1.29 on the S100, while in Republicans counties it is but 94 cents on the §100.

THIEVES are going through the eastern part of the city. They do not break locks, but clothes lines and everything portable lving outdoors suffer from their depredations.

FOBTHE FAIK.—On Saturday evening D. P. Bissel took to Indianapolis eleven horses, entered by Owen Tuller for the premium of $350, offered by the managers of the Indianapolis Fair for the best stable. Most, if not all of-these horses, will also go for the various purses in the speed ring. The following is a list of the horses the names of which will be recognized by those who know anything of the fine stock owned in this city: Mambrino •Qafeen, iifaffiibrino GhleT, Wagoner MflM, Loafer, Bay Jha, Pick Jamison" RpiHyi Miller, Blanche,"Dai#Dean, Jita Houston, and Gritt. We believe that two or three other fine animals from this city have gone over to the Fair, but we are unable to give their names. It is altogether likely that Tuller's stable will carry off the $350 premium.

CONSIDERING the inclemency of the weather on Saturday evening a very good audience assembled at the Wigwam to hear twenty-minute speeches from a number of gentlemen. Tout's Band discoursed a number of airs in their usual acceptable manner. The three first speakers on the lint, Messrs. Baird, Pierce and Hamilton, failed to put_ in an appeajraac^. Jtfr. Allen, being next on the list, made a sliort speech and was followed by Judge Crain in a speech of almost an hour, in which he calmly and forcibly presented the beauties of "Democratic economy." The exercises were closed with a telling little talk by B. Wilson Smith, which elicited hearty applause.

THE new route from Indianapolis to St.Louis, via Yandalia, is eminently a Terre Haute road, the President, Secretary and Auditor, General Superintendent, Treasurer and Paymaster being permanent residents of this city men who have grown up with the same and take a deep interest in every move tending to the advancement and prosperity of Terre Haute.

THE census of the city has been completed, so far as the enumeration is concerned, but the returns for a portion of it have not been forwarded to the U. S. Marshal. We cannot, therefore, ascertain the exact number of population, but understand that it will be about sixteen thousand three hundred. These figures show an increase of one hundred per cent, since 1SG0.
