Kindling' a Eire—Explosion of an oil Can—ilow a Little »irl Losl ller Life -Literally Roasted Alive Horri ble Scene. l-'roni the Pittsburg Gazette, Aug. 11.1
Lasi evening Allegheny was the scene of a horrible accident, which adds another io the long lisl of terrible casualties resulting from !In reckless use of carbon oil. )n the corner of Washington street and Uever avenue, Sixth Ward, almost as far down as tin-car stables, is a three-: orv brick house. The lower part off be build ing is occupied by Saxlon A: Kado grocery stole, the upper portion being used as a dwelling. About o'clock .Mr. Saxton, who was in attendance in flu .-lore, heard a sound like an explosion which apparently came from the room above, lie had not time to ascertain flit cause, before a cry of iire was raised the street, and upon going to the front, he discovered flames issuing from ihe windows in the third storv. neol the per sons who had given the cry, ran at to I'.ox in the vicinity and sonn ded an alarm, once while the other Mr. James M'Caustand, started through the house upstairs. When he reached the room from whence the flames had emanated, he found it filled with smoke lie passed through and endeavored to reach the window, and in doing so his foot struck against a human body lying onthelloor. Reaching down lie caught hold of an arm, and attempted to carry it out but the flesh gave way and the limb slipped back through his hand. He then weni to Ihe window to get air, and retur ning made a second attempt to get the body away, but failed—being unable to gee lor the smoke in the room. By this time lie was assisted by another gentleman, and at lns they succeeded in picking ihe body up and gelling it out of a rear window, to the roof of the kitchen, a two-story building. There they discovered it to be the body of Maggie Shano, a little girl who had been employed about the house. She was still living, but presented a sickening spectacle of a human frame burned almost from head to foot into a crisp. .The rumor in the meantime had spread that a child had been injured, and Pr. Wm. Wilson, wliose office is in the vicinity, was on the roof almost as soon as the body was brought out, and endeavored to render medical assistance. A blanket was procured, and the girl removed to his oflice. The physician at once saw that her injuries were fatal. There was hardly a spot upon her tlut was not charred as through it had passed through a furnace. Her clothing was entirely destioyd not a vestige of hair remained upon her head the upper eyelids had been burned so badly that they had turned up like cri. p, ind her scorched eyeballs evidenced that he had lost sight. The flesh of the face was al-o ehivered up, and the Doctor upon opening the mouth.saw that the tongue ind throat hail been burned as far down could be seen. In fact if she had been placed in a furnace, she could not have ieen more liUrnlh/ i-i,Jr-.l ali, f.
For a lew minutes a! lirst she was able to converse, and in response to inquiries aid she was "kindling the tire with oil," when an explosion occurred. She begged iiteou.lv that water might be thrown •ver her, and when told j-he could not recover, moaned and cried, saving I tn'l die I won't die," in ihe mo-d heartrending manner. The little iclim was about fourteen years id age. had been engaged in attendance upon a «ick lady who lav in an adjoining room from that in which the allair oecured. After the excitement had calmed downsomewhal a search was made in the room, when the oil can was found lying on thetloor, and hnrated open, showing the place of ihe explosion. Sim had evidently been pouring the oil on a pari ol the lire to brighten il up, when ihe blaze set lire to I hat which was in ihe can.
A dish-pan wan also found lying alongside where the body lay, with one handle melted oil', showing the intense heat of the flames. Singular to relate nothing in the room but the carpel- and window blinds were burned, the smoke seemingjlo have subdued the flames.
