morn
ing as the passenger train on the Yandalia road coming east was passing a point ajsotit seven miles out, a man stepped from behind a pile of wood and deliberately hurled a stone at the train. It entered one of the windows, striking a small child upon the head with such "force as to break the rock in two pieces. A considerable bruise was caused upon the child's head, but strange a-s it appeared it was not seriously hurt. It would have fared badly with the miscreant if the train could have been stopped in time. .,
THE Shoe awl Leather Reporter for the week ending July 21st, gives the number of cases of boots and shoes shipped to this city, for the half year ending July 1st, at 58,007 cases, while for the same period, the number shipped to Indianapolis was but 5,001 those to New Albany, '1,G50 to Terre Haute, 430. •From this it would seetu that Evansville buys more boots and shoes in IJostor than all the rest of the State together. —Eraw.etUe Journal.
If the Evausville Jimnuil copies correct! v, the S'/ioe anrf Leather Itepoi ter perpetrates a canard of huge dimensions. There are a number of boot and shoe houses in tliis city, either of which has received more than 4"0 cases from Boston in a single week during the time specified, and the smallest of our retail shops has received more than that number in the same time—the lira! six months of the vear. "We also know that there arc several houses at Indianapolis either of which lias received from the Hub" morei than the entire amount reported to, have been shipped to our capital city.

SOME
GOOD
ADVICE TO
PARENTS.—A
little tract issued for distribution by the Ladies' Sanitary Association of London, gives these wise suggestions for the nurture of children in health of body and spirits:
I. Never refuse a thing if it is harmless, but give it, it you are able, without deluy.
Never ive anything because it is cried for, that von have refused svlun asked for.
Be earelul to observe real illness, and avoid causing bodily uneasiness from over-clothing, or cold or unwholesome food—such as eandv-plums, sour fruit, or giving buns or cakes to quiet the child. 5. Avoid false promises. They are sure to be found out ialse. 5. Avoid threats of all kinds. If believed they make children timid, and in jure both mind and bodv. II not believed they are useless. Such threat bogie, policeman, and black man, iwe sure to be found out to be false iflhcchild live'. ti. Never sav anything untrue to child. 1". Do not wreak your bad temper, or visit vour own feelings ot Jatigue and trouble on children, by being severe with them, or by saying "ion shan ha\e it, or "I won't give it to you," when there 1 no reason for refusal, except that ywi are voiirsolf tireil. or in trouble, or out of sorts. 8. Avoid {.'iving orders, Midi as "Stand still," "Go on," "Hold your tongue," "Put it down," etc., unli\-w you leaiJy moan that they should be obeyed, ami the fewer orders you give the better. 9.-5$eitlM.'i- give too much pitv, nor \Vi be severe and unkind when a child tumbles down or hur)n ireelf. 10. Do not worry a child. Let it alone and let it live in peace.
II. Teach it early 10 play alone and amuse itself. To sum up all in a few words, try to feel like a child to enter into its griets «nd joy.'), its trials and triumphs. Then look forward to the tiiuc when it .vhall have numbered as many years as you have seen, aud pray for health and strength to do your duty bv it You may fail, as we all mav but if vou sow with humility and faith, you will have dom all that, is permitted to us impel creatures snd if you have reared up a
