it in operation. THERE are two very bad places in the streets—Kagle and Mulberry near the T. H. & 1. depot that have been neglectlong enough. They should receive immediate attention.

A COOL PROPOSITION—Several weeks a«'0 Mr. Dunn challenged P. W. There is not a particle of fairness in Voorhees' composition he is a demagogue ami trickster, and does not wi«h to give tin op[onent whom he fe.n-, luit a fleets to despise, an opportunity to .how up his record in his own hearing. to horse flesh this

squelching hot weather. Fast driving is a cruelty to animals, and should not be indulged in nor should horses be overworked. There is now in one of the livery stables, a horse that was so unmercifully driven, a few evenings since, as to now be unable to walk, and is probably permanently ruined.

a lit

tle beggar girl of ten years approached an old man of about sixty years, near the Terre Haute House, asking lur chuiitv. The man drew her into the open lot east of the hotel, and placing the child upon his knee, was taking improper liberties with her person, when her cries brought assistance. The man was arrested and taken before the Mayor, where he gave his name as John ITilman, and said he was fioin Indianapolis. He was artaigned under charge of assault and battery, and tined, with costs, $:i2,l.r. He couldn't pav and was sent to .jail.

Tin: body of Mary Kicchen, a young woman of twenty years of age, who is lately been a teacher at l'eelsville, and who died on Tuesday morning at the hou-e of a respectable family on Seventh street, was disinterred yesterday, on suspicion that her death was the result of foul practice?. A /MW/ mortem examination was made by two of our city physicians and a coroner's jury enipannelled to hold mi inquest. No evidence has vet been heard. A writ was issued by the Mavoi^ last evening, for the arrest of a suspected partv, but up to the time ol going to press, he could not be found.

NOT Kounrn.—John Green, late proprietor ef a saloon on Main street, disposed of his interest in the same, on Wednesday last, receiving in cash $180.— Before leaving he swallowed loo much of bis liquid pizen, and retired to his bed at French John's. Some time during the night the boarders heard a tremendous racket, occasioned by something tumbling down stairs, and Mr. Green, all black and blue, was carried back up-stairs. He stated that he had occasion to go down stairs during the night, and as he stepped out of the door, at the head of the stairs, he was struck by some person, with a club, and before he recovered lie had been robbed of his money, and that his watch had been mashed to pieces. Soon after, as his brother was raising him up to give him some stimulant, the money was discovered safely stowed away under his pillow. The watch, however, is a wreck, and the man fell down stairs without any assistance.

talks French.—TerreHaute Journal. Well, what of that? The Democratic candidate for Congress, while in our plaee, talked African, fluently,—Roekwlle Republican.

THE Brazil Miner states that there lives in the edge of the Clay Prairie, that county, near the Vigo county line, a man by the name of Jacob Moore, who is one hundred and ten years old. Mr. Moore was born in Kentucky, and is now living with his second wife. He raised a large family, and lias great-grand children who are old men. He is hale and hearty, having a vivid recollection of events that transpired nearly a century ago, about which he is fond of talking. He has visited

Staun

ton—four miles from his residence—on an average of twice a week during the spring and summer, and to see him, one would think his chances of life as good as an man of sixty years of age.

DOWN.—Man was made to

.stand erect hence it is that he is so mortified, not to say enraged, when lie chances to tumble down—for tnnible is the precise word phen a man accidentally loses his perpendicularity. No one ever falls gracefully, except upon the stage, and very rarely there.

A man is walking along the pavement, his thoughts intent on his business or some equally absorbing theme. Any idea of a fall is as remote as the stars. He is as confident in his step as he is in the linn earth he steps on a bit of orange peel, and it is all up with him--or rather down. 11 is heels fly from under him quii ker'n powder, the world for an instant reels before his confused optics, he grasps wildlv at nothing, and down he goes, all of a heap.

We saw a case of this kind yesterday. It was a complete, unmitigated tumble, nothing else, and the wonder was that he didn't lly all to pieces when he struck the ground and sprawled all over the pavement, covering more space than it would seem possible to spread a man over if he was completely flattened out

Unless totally disabled the man who tumbles down always refuses any profer red aid from bystanders, and clambers to his feet a-- quick as possible. He feels a sense of deep humiliation and abasement He is affronted should any one ask him if he is hurt, and he never passes that spot again without experiencing, as Adam did when he thought of Paradise, a keen recollection of the fall.

Home Insurance Co. of New York. Extracts from'."American Exchange ami Review.]

The Home Insurance Company of New York wrote in 1S(!9 upon $210,000,000 of fire hazards, about one-thirtieth of the fire insnranee business of the country. Its risks expiring in tlie year amounted to $188,7(15.810, an.f *214,000,000 were carried at the close of 1809.

Not only is the Home the sole two million-dollar capital lire company in New York, but its gro.-s mtrplm alone ($2,51(i,3t8) is larger than the total gross axseis, including capital, of any other New York fire insurance company.

To the administrative and executive authority of this company must be accorded the credit of making the best of the fire situation, of seeing their way through Ihe uncertainties and impediments of the business to rational results. With clear ideas and keen intuitions, avoiding the avenues to bankruptcy which permeate the fire insurance system, they underwrite upon the principle that fire insurance is nothing if not profitable. The policy holder is certainly safest with that company which makes the most money. Its security is worth more than the security of any other compaay. In the present confusion, fire insurance can be promised at any price, but it can not De secured at a price below a paying point. An office doing a nonparing business is simply a cheat and delusion to the policy-holder. The Home Insurance Company practices no deception, and we believe it to be good for what it contracts to do. When it is understood that nearly one-half of the fire insurance companies which have been started in the United States havefailed, this may seem like a bold faith to plaicein any such.institution. Still, the management of the Home inspires confidence, and we have given evidence that they are not working toward insolvency."

The Home is represented in this city by Hosfordjand Boudinot, office cor. 4th and Maixyrts 2-dlm,
