IVKECKED ON A CORAL REEF.

Six Snilors Fifty-one Days oil a Barren Island Under (lie Equator.

The London -Time* of June '.!7th say,": The iron clipper bark Silver Craig, Captain Cohu, which lately arrived at Liverpool, brought six seamen, the sole siir-. vivors uf the Liverpool ship Alercuriiis, who were picked up from a coral reef oil the northern coast of Brazil, where they had managed to exist lifty-one days. The Silver Criiig sailed from bday on the afternoon of the loth ot May- When about ten miles from the luua- Tleef, otf I'einainbuco, the weather clear and a moderate breeze blowing, Captain Cohu discovered a lump on the reel which .he knew he was approaching, and made it out to be a hilt of some kind. Drawing nearer, he observed a mast, with something like a signal of distress living, and he at once bene down toward the reef, and hauled a boat out and prepared her Jor launching, in order to visit the leel. As lie drew nearer the island he was enabled to see that the supposed flag was a stripped shirt, hoisted half-mast high, and disposed in lieu of a better signal. The Silver Craig was hove to within a mile aud a half or two miles ot the reef, aud then six seamen came alongside in two small boats which they had constructed from wreckage found on the reel'. Thev said thev believed themselves to be 'lie sole survivors ot the ship Mcrcunus. of Li verpool, which had been wrecked on a reet while on a vovaive Irom Snn Francisco to Liverpool They liad little or no clothes, but, with the exception of a colored man. were all in e.ood condition, having lived upon birds' egj's, shell-tish. fish, andjeveu turtles, dunking .resli water, which thev had the food fortune to find (.m the reet. They had with them basket eontaininp- about two hundred of the liuee eggs which had been their piincipal source of food, and thev were delicious eating when cooked. Captain Cohu and his officers and crew took the castaways on board the Silver Craig, supplied them with fixxl and dothinc, and, as already stated, brought them lo Liverpool.

The Mereurius was a tine new iron lippership ot S

one of the holes, or small caverns which the sea had worn into the coral, and he was not seen again. In the course of the day another survivor was di?covqwa ton another part of thg^xw. sruck about 3 o'clockJjB ine liMttoitfg, and when the dav l^kjp&ll tlifKYas-to-.taj seen of the Mefturi^sreee of her fore and mainmast "in the dgep water alongside the reef. Afterwards she partly broke up and some of the wreckage washed ashore, but no provisions, or cargo, which consisted of grain. The survivors_had a dreary prespect before them.

.to believe that some

of the Mongolians, at least, are quite averse to enteiing tlie field of labor in the United States as those who are HAW occupying them fire opposed to their coming. On a special Chinese emigrant train from .. Sacramento to Knoxyille a few layj» ago a number of the Coolies jumped from- the car windows near the former place affd made good their, escape. This reminds one of the most revolting features of the African slave trade, when hundreds -of the captives ended their miseries by jumping from the ships, oil which they .were being transported, into the sea, preferring death to the sufferings they were enduring and the unknown ones yet in store for tiieni. Whether a similar feeling animated the Coolies who leaped from the cars is ncit certain, but their desperate escapes were either prompted by an uncontrollable aversion to their lot as involuntary laborers, or else they were willing to risk their necks in the effort to seek their fortunes in the land of gold—
