a laudable desire to heal the

He was appointed it.- one of the Committee to whom was assigned the pleasing and dignified service of escorting the President, Major General

who have read the platform
adopted at the Convention over which Major General

We have good authority for the statement that a resolution was before the Platform Committee severely denouncing land grabbers and all who have aided or abetted their schemes but a judicious counselor suggested that, since the only Democratic daily piper in the District was the only paper in the State that had favored the land-grabbers, it would be advisable to keep quiet on that question and his advice, seeming good and wholesome, was followed.
IK THERE has been any "improvement in our election laws" since 18ti8 the fact is not generally understood by the people.—Journal.
•1\
"The fact" may not be "understood" fiv your readers, but the
cloven hoof will now and then
protrude. The Democracy would like to assume the virtue, though tljey have it not, of respect for the soldiers, but at times their actual feelings can not be repressed. Witness the following reference to the dedication of the Putnam county monument to-day, taken from the Evansville iiiiriiif of Thursday: "We see by the

of yesterday
tlint. the citizens of tireencastle, 'without distinction of party,' are to have a grand dornick dedication on Saturday next. A monument has been built, and speeches are to be made over it, and songs sung. We suppose this kind ol thing will be kept up until the election is over."
Soldiers of Indiana! what do you think of a party one of the leading organs of which styles the dedication of a monument in honor of your dead companions "a
dedication!"—

Republican Financiering. While the Democrats are howling about the extravagance and mismanage mentofthe Republicans, we do not know of anv more interesting rending than the tegular monthly statements of the public debt. That of the first inst. is par iiculai lv pleasant, and we commend its consideration to e\ei_v patiiotic liti/en of whatever party.
On the 1st of July, 18tiH, the debt was stated at Now it 2,:8ti, S.'SS,5W.74. Showing a reduction lor the year of $102,04^.889.84. The maximum of the debt Sept. 1, 18t5, was tf-J,757,6SH,f»71.4:t. This shows a total reduction in live vears of $371,330,080.69, an annual average of £74,206,196.14

'•All IIOWM IN NEW YORK.
The Chinese Residents—What They Ho aud llow Tlicy Live.,
Tliore are at present about two hundred and fifty CSiitiese in New ork city, arid their haunts are in the most squalid portions of Baxter, Mulberry, Pell, Park, Worth, Roosevelt, Water, and Cherry streets, and truly, whatever else may be said of the Chinaman, he is not a remarkably clean addition to an already filthy neighborhood. His domestic habits, his peculiarities and vices, have been tipae and again held up to the view of our citizens through the columns of the various newspapers. A stranger in a strange land ignorant of its language, and powerless to defend himself against the prejudices that surround him—by force _ol circumstances, if not of nature, he is driven, to association with tlie vilest of the vile. Denied the society of the purer of the opposite sex, and depised by even the most abandoned of his own, the sport and game of ajl the urchins ot the neighborhood in which he resides, his companions are the most depraved of prostitutes, who, having been worn out in the service of sin, are but too happy to consort with him for their mere existence and the "luxury" of intoxicating liquor.
The majority of the Chinamen are engaged in the manufacture of cigars, and are employed in the various factoiies, although as yet not to a great extent. The cigar-makers are generally Coolies, who, having been exported to Cuba under contract, have acquired the trade and come to this city, where they most generally obtain work from the manufacturers who do anything or take any. one to free themselves from the trade union.?. A still greater number are engaged in the manufacture and sale of cigars for themselves, and can be seen any day along the park, Chatham street, Bowery, the ferries, anil at the entrances to the principal picnic grounds in the city and vicinity. They have a very keen apprecation of what is to their interest, and see that they are not cheated by designing tradesmen and wherever they are employed in ci-gar-making, if they are equally as gocx] workmen, they receive the same wages as their white fellow-workmen. As cirgarmakers they are very earful aud painstaking, but are not as rapid as the German workmen. Their employers recommend them highly for their docility, steadiness and honesty and notwithstanding the general belief that they live on rice, a visit to their rooms at meal time will convince any one tliat theyare just as fond of meat as the European, beefsteak and onions being a favorite dish.
Those who have resided in Cuba speak the Spanish language very well—much better than they speak the English—and several now propose returning to Cuba and establishing themselves in business. The gentleman who is instructing them in English has many applications from various parts of the country lor Chinamen and their wives, the former to do cooking, and the latter housework and sewing and although the former grasp at the opportunity with eagerness, their wives— la/.v, shiftless and dissipated—are not at all inclined to go, as they would not have the same opportunities for their beastly indulgences in whisky and opium, and would have to work for their living, which they do not want to do.—A'. ¥.

nearly all the papers in the State, have published the election law passed by the last Legislature and approved May 13, l.SfM. "The people" are nearly unanimous in declaring it an improvement on the act of 1867." It does away with the expensive business of registration, and pro» vide* more reliable safe-guards against fraudulent voting. It will be found on pages 58, oW, CO and til of the acts of the ,-pecial session of 'SO, and we commend it to your careful perusal as a good specimen of wise legislation. Read it and see how nicely it provides for the detection of 1i-audulent voters. ,,
He felt strongly in favor of the abolition of slavery and the amelioration of the indition ol the slave, and made two trips to this country in regard to th« lame. On the second visit the committee were intrusted with an important mission ill regard to the abolition of slavery, which led them to visit the Governor of each Southern State.— Ity all were they gracefully, and in many cases cordially received, except by the Governor of Missouri, by whom they were rudclv repulsed. It was during this vixil Wni. Forster.a brother of Josiah, anexcellent man, and member of the committee, died in Kastern Tennessee. Win. 2 Tint in these five years the taxes liave been reduced, on botU customs aud internal taxes, to an amount estimated at *300,000,000 a year. 3. And that under
Grant'sadministra

To this record of success in governmental financiering, the history of the world furnishes no paralel and the American people will not lie so silly as to turn out of power a yarty which has shown such competency to deal with the grand problems of debt and taxation.

The cable dispatches in our second edition yesterday announced (liedeath of Josiali Forster. He died at his residence in Tottenham, near London, in the 87th year of his age. He was truly, as the dispatch has ir, "the Patriarch of the Quakers." For a great many years he has been the most influential man in the London Yearly Meeting of that Society, which is equivalent to saying that he has been the leading man in the Society the world over, ("of the London Yearly Meeting is the overshadowiug influence wherever the sect had any existence. Mr. Forster Wits not noted tor his oratorical powers, but in his sound judgment and business capacity. his friends seemed to have almost unlimited confidence.
