audience witnessed the interesting exercises of the twenty-ninth annual commencement, at St. Marys, yesterday. The programme consisted mainly ot music, in which ihe young ladies exhibited the most commendable and gratifying proficiency. Theie were but two graduates, Mirf Kumia Johnstou and Lena Jones' The former read a very creditable essay upon "Word-'' the latter pie«ented an equally Intelestmg pioJuction entitled "Autograph of the Soul.

It strikes us that Professor Agassiz with all his scientific attainments, must be a poor judge of human nature if I thinks such a startling announcement this is calculated to quiet the nerves and restore the appetites of the ctiinuiuuifv listurbed by the pork controvers. As long as the trichina-was confined to hog? re could make a safe thing of it by hewing their tlesh and falling back on beef, mutton, Ac. night was the hottest and

most uncomfortable night of the season. It was so hot that most people relinquish' ed all attempts at sleep and directed their entire attention towards efforts to live through the night. Never in the course of our experience with heated terms have we known a heated term lo get healed a.s is this heated lerm.

Seasonable Advice.—The heat, es" pecially out of the shade, is intense. How to avoid prostration by such weather is trite, but if the telling of an old story over and over again saves the life or mitigates the sufferings of one individual, it is worth while to tell it. Therefore we say that while this very warm weather prevails, do not be in a hurry about any thing, but walk, eat, drink and work slowly. Keep in the shade as much as as possible. Patronize ice-water sparingly, likewise animal food. Subsist upon the rich, ripe, sound fruits of the sea' son. Bathe with moderation do not remain in the water longer than ten minutes. Wear light clothing we mean light in weight, but maintain worsted or flannel under-garments. Do not get angry anger is a dangerous passion when the mercury has risen above 80°. -Donot fret. Avoid worry and anxiety. Sleep at least eight hours out of every twentyfour, and let the hours for sleep be selected from the early part of the night.— Above all, avoid intoxicating beverages. They are no use at this season, even when swallowed temperately they are damaging in the extreme, if taken in extremely worm weather immoderately. A couple of drinks of ardent spirits will predispjs.e anybody, Ihe hard working man especially, lo sun-stroke, appoplexy or syncope. Be temperate in all things, good-natured and chaste, and fear not.

How

will serenade

the citizens of Terre Haute early on th morning of the Fourth ol July. Th anniversary of our national independeiK will be the first which the colored peopl have felt any desire to celebrate, because until now, the Declaration ol Independ ence lists seemed lo them very much like a falsehood. But they wish to acknow edge the great blowing which tli Fifteenth Amendment has brought their race, and thw colored Band will tr to express the.sentiment oft he enfranchised people in music. Every truly patriotic heart should rejoice that the time come, at last, when all the inhabitants ol America can feel that they have cause for thankfulness and joy at the return "Ihe day we celebrate."

A discussion took place in rel'ence to Trichina: spiralis in which some very remarkable and teresting statements were made upon th subject by Professor Agassiz and others Professor J. Baker Kdwards lirst gav some facts concerning trichina-, stating what is generally known, that they ar minute worms, which tind their way int the system by Ihe means of diseased pm eaten raw or insufficiently cooked. The female trichina', once in the stomach there propogates immense quantities worms, which make their wav into tli muscles and feed upon llieiu, thus usual ly causing death. Sometimes, however the worms die, and I hey then assume spiral form, and can be examined with microscope il powerful polarized light iused. If meat containing trichina, ilieated lo 212 degrees, the worms will be killed, and the meat will not injure the consumer, if it be good iu other respectProfessor Agassi/, followed Professor Eil wards. He said that he "hoped the appetite of the community would not be disturbed by this discussion, as such worms are present in all meats and even vegetables, and there is no danger if they be properly cooked."

Run—Some

of our loo confiding readers may learn something by the following extract in which a Nfew York correspondent of the Cincinnati Ciitiunerciu/ tells how a quack 1/ -f »^,t makes his money: "if'-

There is one Broadway consumption curc-r and cure-all doctor, whose annual income for years -past has been between $100,000 and $125,000. He has corata ly an average of between four and five thousand patients, located all over th country, uiwt of whom communicate with him by letter, and to whom he communicates advice and prescriptions bv post and express. His establishment i: regularly organized, and is kept constant ly running, though he himself is absent more than half of the time in other cities where he has other establishments. His letters from patients number over a lain dred a day, and he has about a dozen men and women engaged in reading, classifying and answering them, and putting up the medicine for them.

The whole machine moves, with rcgu laiity, though he himself never reads oi answers any of the letters of his distressed but hopeful correspondents. There is no roasoii why he should know anything of the cases. 11 is clerks can attend to th business as well as himself. He has some half dozen or dozen medicines, two oi more of which he administers for con sumption and every sort of complaint and it only requires a little experience on Ihe part of his clerks lo classify every case ill a big book under some given head which requires a certain kind or kinds of medicine. His constant supplies of victims are drawn mainly from I lie "intelligent rural population" of the Eastern and Western Slates.
