As AN indication of the intensity of heal required in making pig iron, we give the composition of the bottom of the furnace now being constructed in our busy suburb of Bagdad. The lowest layer is 12 inches of sand next 8 inches of Brazil fire brick then 9 inches of sand, and lastly 21 inches of Shenango fire brick. Impenetrable as this would seem it will ie* quire renewal after being in use for two years, as the melted iron will find away into or through it. .,
Bowling-Green Constitution states
that there is a well in Harrison township, Clay county, that has been in use proba bly twenty years, the water of which, during the day, is of ordinary quality, holding no mineral solution, but that immediately after sunset and during the night, it is strongly sulphurous—so much «o as to be very unpleasant to drink.
The same paper tells of a well in Lewis township, in which there is an inexhaustible supply of good water at all times excepting when there is a prevailing wind from the north. When this is the case for the space of twenty-four hours, it is entirely dried up. As soon as the wind changes it is abundantly supplied.
These are tough stories, and a Democratic paper is not the best authority in relation to wells or other source from which water is obtained.

insurance business is very lively
in this city and vicinity. We have no pet company to recommend, but we advise every man who can possibly keep up the payments to take out a policy in some good company. Men who have families dependeut on their labor, will find a life policy one of the most comforting things they can have in the house. Especially when stricken down by disease, with a near prospect of having to face the "Grim Messenger," such a document will mitigate suffering, and take much of bitterness even from the "closing scene." Nothing can be harder to bear than the certainty,in the mind of a dying man, that he is leaving his wife and little ones to go through along struggle with cruel poverty. The system of life insurance enables almost any man to provide against such a contingency. And it is a duty to make such provision, a duty neglected by liiiiWBTMli who are very particular in the less inupoitant oMi« totafesraar

WE
learn that some members of the
Congregational Church have purchased a lot. on the south side of the Bloomington road between 13th and 14th streets and intend crecting a chapel upon it at opee, for the purposes of a Sunday School .and occasional religious services. This is movement in the right direction, as no portion of our city is growing so rapidly as this. The parties concerned give-evi-dence of wisdom and a true Christian spirit by selecting a portion of the city which is remote from any other church, We doubt not that the citizens in that thriving portion of our town will regard this movement with great lavor. -I.1 r-

THE
of the Board of
Directors of the Southern Prison has just returned home from meeting of the Board, and from him we learn that the affairs of the in1 stitution are in a satisfactory condition. There are now confined 388 prisoners, whom 14 are women. The repairs of damages from the late fire are nearly completed and embrace many improvements, especially by extensive enlargements of the water supply, as precautions against similar accidents. The entire expense will not vary much from $8,500, Five applications for pardon were sub1 mitted to them, of which they recom mended one for Executive clemency.
If we are correctly informed, the plan is to hold these services in the cool of the day, and in parts of the city at distance from the churches. In this way it is hoped that many who cannot attend the ordinary services may have the gos pel brought to their doors, and that others who are indifferent may learn that christian people are not without care for them.
This strikes us as a plan very similar to that of the Great Preacher who first proclaimed the gospel upon mountain and hill-side, upon the shores of the lake and from the boats of ishermen. ^he plan goes into operation next Sunday, but Mr. Howe declines to give us the location of the first meeting, on the ground that it intended more especially for the im mediate neighborhood in which it is held, and not to draw a crowd from other parts of the city and thus interfere with the regular services of others.
