Indiana—Her Growing Trade. 4 r^ofertaitri^gf II*V ..• *r.V
BOUSE OF EZRA SMITH CO.— KICHMOND. Within tlie pMt few years the school furniture business has grown to be a very important feature of our manufacturing interest. Not only does the natural in crease of our "youthful population add largely to the demand for this class of goods, but awakening interest in educa. tion, combined with the desire that our schools should be supplied with earthing that will aid in this work, has induced men of intetprise ii^various part8 of the country to devote themselves to the task of supplying this demand. Prominent among thes$ is the house of Ezra Smith & Co., whose factory is situated on the corner of Sixth and Walnut streets. These gentlemen started in business here about eleven years ago. In the start their business was devoted to the supplying of building material, such as dressed lumber flooring, weather boarding, shingles, lath, frames, doors, sash, blinds, brackets, moulding Ac., to all of which they still give special attention and can supply as promptly and on as good terms, perhaps, as any house in the Slate. But the main branch of business to which we desire at this time to call especial attention is that school of furniture. This branch has pressed itself upon them more recently. So extensively have they prepared for this kind of work, that their establishment is called the "Indiana School Furniture Works." The great variety of seats and and desks which they are furnishing, precludes a detailed description in an article of this character. A score of recommendations from various parts of the country might be given to show the superior class of work. A single sentence, however, from one which appears in their catalogue sind coming from a party in Ohio, who lias used them, will speak* as forcibly as anything we could nay. He says: "For style, finish, strength and durability
they are superior to any
school furniture I have seen from other manufacturers, and can cheerfully recommend them to others."
Besides these various patterns of school desks and seats they are also making teachers' tables and desks of a variety of styles. They are also prepared to furnish school apparatus and supplies, globes, maps, ink wolls, blackboard*slating, Ac. For a full description of these variou® articles we would simply refer, the reader to their illustrated catalogue.
The works are run by a thirty-horse power engine, with a capacity of fortytive horse if desired. The business of this firm extends into near a dozen State of the Union, going as far east as Philadelphia and as far South as New OrleansTheir castings are made by Messrs. Peterson A King of that place. |j

A beautiful piece of ornamental work of which they now have the pattern, and which they are prepared to supply in any number, either singly or in large orders, consists of a large garden vase. The vase is two feet in diameter at the top and Would make a beautiful ornament for any yard. We think that the advantages of an iron vase over that of terre cotta is so great that a large sale for this article will be found.
Messrs. Peterson & King have helped to demonstrate the fact that Rich
