CVSPHPHMnfflOe we were there. This fete of W»«aifiaai«hegreatly regrets. The next that attracthed our notice was Emms XII I, a three year pld heifer with hfer second calf and one of the finest and most perfectly formed animals of the jfiad».we have seen. She is a rich and rather-darkish roan'—Juiet like the noble bnll 'Wellington, of the Clinton county ia«grtaJtioB,. for ook)r. the female part-of the very crown pinnacle of that man's success in cattle raising hig two yearling heifers, Emma XVI and Euparca. Two such animals we }lad never Before looked upon, and to pronounce in favor of either as against the o'her, is samething the beholder would feel'loth to do yet our preference is with the rather more effeminate-toned Emma. But they'ate both models of snfpa-sing beauty and quahtieB, and the great, round and robust habit of Euparca perhaps fully oflsets, when viewed as a receptacle for 'ender and fatty increase to the high and perfect style of her. peer

Taking a glance at the tine cow favorite, also a glimpse at Emma XIV, which is a handsome white yearling heifer— the rest are all red or roan—we passed to notice the suckling heifer cfcdf Emma XVII, which inay excel and surely does equal for symmetry and splendor of form, anything in the magnificent herd. She is 'he calf of Emma XII, and a finer specimen of the short-horn we have yet to see. Mr. Hankin* has four yearling bnlls of great value, two of them possessing qualities and features of the highest merit. The one he calls General Sherman is certainly the grandest and finest animal of his age we nave ever looked at of the cow kind. He is of the Euparca tribe, and ranks no doubt with the best in America or Europe.. So is Sed Jacket IV, the product,, of his own grand sire, a noble, specimen of his species,

From the New York Tribune.] There is a great dMoCjood sense in the proposition of fciwes to tax dogs, which the CoaMPltfae rf Ways and Mcnra is now consideniig. JDogs in thin country may be clarified aa_^ollow8: 1. Dogx kept for the paqnseft" of defence. There are,1»ot many of tne^% and there is no*c*«bh mtjfii their pmiun^ are usually in .good circumstances,' they should not be taked. 2. Dogs kept for prize-fight-ing. These should be taxed, and, if discrimination can be made, a* heavily jas possible. 3. Dogs kept for shooting purposes. These are mostly Ike property well-to-do men whe can fuoHf to'pay.foi luxuries. 4. Pets, including poodles, •King- Charies jpwiaia, biack-andrtatU^nera, and every animal which go« «y the^ name of lap-dog. These will bear taxation to almost any, extent. 5. Wandering worthless ahd| ownerless curs. These should be exterminated-

We trust that we shall not offend the sensibilities of Mr. Senator Samnwr by#t^e apparent ferocity of our last obawvation for really there ia a great 4eal more humanity in killing a vagrant dog than in permitting him to live on without re gnlar food and shelter. Moreover, such a creature is thp most likely to go mad( and bite the neighborhood and in certain districts his taste for mutton of his own killing is found to be decided as well as disagreeable to sheep-keepers. And as to the general purpose of the measure, we may say that-dora'rome much nearer to being luxuries' than many o'.her objects of liberal taxation.' "We should be' sorry to hurt the feelings of any proprietor of a faithful and affectionate dog Tray, whoee breast is wkito, his toa*ie hack

Weel olad in coat o' dfiis btoek His gawcie tail in npWara curl Hang o'er hie hardies wi' a swirlIt would be more Abominably selfish not to be willing to pay a tax upon the possession of so much beauty and ihtelli gence.

It is unusually thought that the com-

laints made by sheep-owners aj-a-usi are unfounded but we suspici that the annual loss sustained is greater than that reported. In Maine alone, and in only five counties, the number of sheep killed by dogs is reported .to be fourteen hundred during the last year. This is a sheer, unnecessary, and abominable waste of valuable, and, we ,-may say, of pv-juliarly valuable property. If there is any interest which should be protected it is that of wool-grow.'ng. We are no it is well known, in favor of Capital Punishment for men but any "dog who has once helped himself to a taste of living mutton should be hung at ogee, without benefit of clergy. PENN»S ESBAPD-,

A Letter from Cotton Mather—Puri tan Plot to Capture William Penn and Se:i Him to Barbade^s for "Riimiiu- and Sugar."

From't^e^ Gaston (Pennsylvania) Ar(jus Mr. Judkins, the Librarian off he MassachuseUs Historical Society, in oye hauling a chest of old papers deposited in the archievee of that body by the late Robert Greenleaf, of Maiden, has. recently made a curious discovery, which has especial interest for the people of Pennsylvania. Among these papers was one of ancient date, which bore this, indorsement: "Yeschemeto bagge Penne." This curious title attracted the attention of Mr. Judkins, and he examined the contents of the document with more than common interest. It is the familiar and quaint handwriting of .Key., Cotton Mather,, and is addressed to "Ye aged and beloved Mr. John Higginsou." •It bears date "Septembei ye 15th, 1682," and reads thus, the old spcilling .of the original being followed to. the letter "There bee now at sea a' shipp® (for our riend Mr. Elias Holcroft, oi London, did advise me by the ladt packet that it wold sail some 'tims in August), called ye Welcomc, R. AN INFERNAL CRIME.

The Most Conclnglye Pro*? Yet of the Total Depravity of Man. i&'JvhXi'i From the New Yorh Herald.] 5* sW

The crime charged against a man named Lange, a dealer in picture frames in this city, is one that sheuld give him a pre-eminence in the criminal catalogue for diabolical intent. He shipped a box in April last on the New Orleans steamer, and secured an insurance on it of one thousand six hundred and fifty dollars and the box proved to have been prepared with explosive and inflammable material, and was only prevented from burning the sh:p by the watchfulness and activity of the cap-ain In the box were vessels of alcohol, gasoline and turpentine, and fire was apparently to have been set to these by a chemical that would explode with slight friction. The friction was provided for by mice shut in a box, who, in gnawing their way out, were to fire the train that might have destroyed the ship and all her eotupany at sea. Here, then, is, if the charge prove true, a 'man who deliberately contrives that awful calamy, fire on a ship at sea—contrives the possible frightful death of twenty or thirty persons—to secure the 4ma)i piece of sixteen hundred dollars insHrmxv money. He should be tried by ajuty ol sea captains and sai lore. It is. a remarkable coincidence hat this crime was attempted again«t the steanfl'er George Willing on, while some years since a crime of he same nature wai contrived
