Recently Messrs. Butsch, Dickson & I
Perhaps by taking a stroll through the works we can form abetter idea of their magnitude than in any other way. Following dne'of the numerous lihfis bf railroad which connect- with the Union depot from the West, and wh^ph is owned jby Messrs. liutslh, Dilkson Si Co./ anil.uicd l)y them to connect their works with all the other roads running out of the city, we are brought directly upon tile grounds, which are located on the East bank of White Jiiver. X&Ug before, reaching .the works the eye is attracted by the dense volume of smoke which issues from its numerous furnaces, and as jre approach still nearer, the lurid issues #nich cap the huge chimneys denote ordinary combustion. Upon entering the main building one is forcibly impressed with the magnitude of the works. Here is stretched out before us the hissing of steam, the flying of immense wheels, the buzzing of the varied machinery used in the several stages of the work, commingled with the (slashing of the iron bars as they come from the machinery—all tend to produce a feeling almost akin to awe in the mind of one who has ri^v(?r before visited a place of the kind.
Not far from the'centrC of the room stands a three hundred horse power engine with its immense fly wheel. This mill is used in running what is called a -mrick tuill. It also propels a bar iron mill, of fifteen inches ttain. In addition to this mammoth engine there are three other engines used ill this department each of seventy-five horse power. But among the greatest wonders of the mill are the pumps which supply the water.— The largest of these, Thomas Patchers patent, throws eiglifeep thousand, gallons of water per hour* It is the only pump of the kind west of Pittsburff, wlule there are only three of the, kind west of the Alleghany Mountains. The massive machinery winch is used in working the jron requires an immediate amount of water to keep it froqj becoming red hot. This pump is designed to meet this c|emattd. There is Mill another pump which throws upward|of six thoumad' gal-' Ions per hour, ttnd is used in supplying eight lavge fine boilers. These boilers qie twenty-four feet long and more than ten fept in clioumfeienoe,
But let us go over to the-other -si^e of the room and watch tha A^iquscgrocesses which the'iron gbe*. On tlt^Vesrside of the building we find an enormops pile of what is called pig iron. This iron con-, gjsts pf thick short b^rfy spiqewhat re 'npi^bling card wood. It is dimply crude iron just as it comes from the blast furnace and of conrne is very impure.
Of the pig iron about twelve tons per day are consumed at these works, or when run at night double thai amount. The first process is what j* VptB\w\ puddling.— This consists in melting the iron in large furnaces', and stirring it uiiti] it becomes {)L'ir the consistency of wax. In the mill there are eight of these furnaces. One mill will puddle a ton of jfon in about fight hotirs.
After the iron is puddlt4 it *8 taken from the furnace in large bulls and thrown into a machino'which very much resem-' blcs the mouth of an alligator, and which, in fact, bears the name. Here it undergoes a regular chewing process, the heavy jaws opening and closing upon it, while the attendant turns the lump every time the jaw opens. Under this process a iiery liquid runs from the mass, thus digesting it l)f i^ucli of its impunity. The proprietors arc about putting in another maobine to do the same work. It is called a coffee mill squeezer. It comes from Pittsburg and will co»t $2,000. From this squeezer, the iron is taken to a machine yhich rolls it out intqloqg bqrq. Ofl the Rebuilt of the water that is used to keep tne machine from heating and therepeatcil rolling, the iron becomes eold, and it, becomes necessary to reheat if before the finishing touches can be given- For tliis purpose tLjerp are twp qtqer large furnaces, where after being thoroughly reheatedit is again pnt through another rolling mill. After tne necessary straightening anil trimming are doite it is then -.ready for the market.

prietors have erected a large lathe, upon which they torn their own rollers. Immediately east of the main building, jt«,Wrs. fintsQh, Dickson !t Co., have a large nut and bolt department, which h«s a seventy-five horse power engine. It is designed to manufacture all kinds of bolts and nuts in this department. For this purpose thev have some eighteen separate machines, some of which weigh from four to six tons.
All of these works have a capacity of running a mnch larger amount of ma chinery as occasion may demand that it shall be added.
